Laurel Bank Vineyard is a boutique vineyard at Granton, southern Tasmania. Granton overlooks the Derwent River west of Hobart, a fifteen minute drive from the city centre (18 kilometres/11 miles). The picturesque, three hectare Laurel Bank Vineyard produces a range of medal and award-winning cool climate wines including pinot noir, merlot, cabernet, sauvignon blanc and cabernet franc. You can taste the range of wines at the cellar door by appointment and enjoy the great views of the Derwent River. Tasmania's cool climate sets it apart from the rest of Australia as a prime wine-growing region. The Island's first experiment with grapevines led to a white wine being shown at the Paris Exhibition in 1848. Since then, the Tasmanian wine industry has grown to over 200 vineyards, producing more than 6,500 tonnes of grapes per year. Tasmania's cool climate with its long, sunny autumns is perfect for growing intensely-flavoured Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Gewürtztraminer and Riesling grapes.

Located at 42 degrees south latitude this is genuine cool climate viticulture. Tasmania is rapidly gaining a reputation as Australia's premier Pinot Noir, Riesling and Sparkling wine producing area. Derwent Estate's cellar door is located in one of the two historic 1830's built houses on the property. You can taste our current range of wines, talk to the people who run the vineyard and even pick up some rare wines not generally available anywhere else.

Stefano Lubiana Wines & Osteria

60 Rowbottoms Road, Granton TAS 7030
Established in 1990, we are a boutique family-owned and operated company that is Tasmania's first and only certified biodynamic vineyard and focused entirely upon producing small quantities of naturally handcrafted wines from grape to glass in the state's cool maritime climate. The vineyard, winery, osteria and distillery site overlooks the picturesque River Derwent estuary. Join us at our cellar door and osteria for a taste of the wines and some great rustic Italian food. An osteria can be described as a small 'farmhouse' style eatery in Italy. Often they don't have a menu and the dishes are created with what is local and in season. In our osteria, the menu is fresh, seasonal, inspired by regional Italian cuisine and based around what comes out of our biodynamically run vegetable garden. We harvest honey from our bees, pickle and preserve our produce and make all our own bread from organic flours in the wood fired oven. We use ethically raised free-range meats from local farmers and wild caught seafood from the pristine waters of Tasmania. Even the coffee beans and milk are certified organic and biodynamic! Our menu changes weekly and bookings are advised....

St Mark's Church, Pontville Logo and Images

St Mark's Church, Pontville

1 Kimberley Street, Pontville TAS 7030
An unusual Romanesque church built in 1839-41 to a design of convict architect James Blackburn from very finely tooled Brighton sandstone. Few travelers driving through Pontville could fail to notice the striking exterior of St Mark’s Church, standing on the top of the hill on the north side of Pontville. Convict Architect James Blackburn had been transported from England in 1833 for forgery. Because of his academic qualifications, he was attached to the public works department and within a few years, he had proved his worth by designing plans for a number of churches and public buildings in Hobart and nearby districts. As far as it is known the foundation stone, which unfortunately can no longer be seen, was laid by the then Lieutenant Governor of Tasmania, Sir John Franklin in 1839 but delays resulting from its convict labourers being diverted to other projects, such as the Pontville Bridge and the Watch House meant that the building was not completed until February 1841. It was dedicated on the 21st February that same year by Archdeacon Williams Hutchins. ...

Pontville

Pontville is on the Jordan River, 30 km north of Hobart, and is one of Tasmania's oldest settlements. The site was established as a garrison town in 1821 and by the mid-1840s had become a thriving settlement and an important staging point for travellers on route between Hobart and Launceston. Today, Pontville offers a glimpse into Tasmania's colonial past with magnificent sandstone buildings, many headstones, a cosy inn, historic accommodation and accessible heritage. Take a private tour of the Shene Estate Historic Site and explore a 19th century country estate with its Georgian farmhouse, gothic stables, convict-built barn and outbuildings. Also of interest is St. Mark's Church, a highly unusual example of the Romanesque style and another example of the work of noted convict architect, James Blackburn. Lythgo's Row, known as The Barracks, is another local landmark near the bridge over the Jordan River. The building was built in 1824 as accommodation for soldiers and is a combination of five cottages - three with roof dormers and two larger cottages with three bays.
