The Australian Sugar Heritage Centre opened in 1977 and is a modern complex covering some 14,000 square. The Museum's collection comprises of contemporary and historical photographs, books, documents, domestic objects and artefacts related to Australia's sugar industry. Archer Park Rail Museum contains many exhibitions associated with railways and the Rockhampton Council Tramways from 1899. Rollingstock, including the Purrey Steam Tram, and rail memorabilia have been collected from a variety of sources including private collectors, former rail workers, the "Friends of Archer Park", and Queensland Rail. A revolutionary digital soundscape system of sound effects and commentary enhances the experience as you wind your way through the authentic exhibitions. Purrey Steam Tram rides are available on Sundays between 10 am to 1pm and Family Fun Days are held on the fourth Sunday of February, April, June, August and October, where there is a gold coin entry and small fee to ride the tram for those 14 years and over. The Tram does not run between the end of November until the beginning of February. The Queensland Maritime Museum is a fantastic experience for the whole family. It features the historic warship Diamantina, the 1925 steam tug Forceful, the heritage listed South Brisbane Dry Dock, and a large collection of exhibits such as Jessica Watson's yacht Pink Lady. Visitors can board the Diamantina at her berth in the dry dock and access throughout the vessel is visitor friendly. The Diamantina has been restored to her 1945 condition and she is the only one of her kind left in the world. Completed in 1881, the South Brisbane Dry Dock housing the Diamantina and a lightship is the centrepiece of the Museum. Visitors can gain easy access to the dry dock and marvel at its construction and the large warship above them. Lighthouses are popular exhibits and the Museum has a very special presentation of lighthouse technology. The Maritime Museum can facilitate school and group visits, holds regular events and exhibitions, and runs education and research programs. Opened in November 2001, the Museum showcases the history of the South Burnett's timber industry, which underpinned the early settlement of the region and has continued to play an important part in its development. The traditional timber structure is flanked by life-size sculptures of a bullocky and his head bullocks, an old water-well and post-and-rail fence. On the eastern end of the building is the stainless steel silhouette of a timber cutter. Inside, the wagon camp diorama, complete with restored bullock wagon, effectively captures the spirit of those involved in the felling and logging of timber in the early 1900s. Set against authentic wooden slabs and shingles, are displays of South Burnett timbers, artifacts and photos pertaining to the early timber industry in the region. A well stocked Gift Shop, featuring locally produced woodcraft, forms part of the incorporated Visitor Information Centre. In the Woodcrafters' Workshop, constructed beside the Museum in 2003, local woodworkers regularly demonstrate their skills. Take a close look at all the sections of the mural to see some of the history and stories of the Burdekin area. You may even find a mythical creature or two. The painting was created on scaffolding in the foyer of the Burdekin Theatre in 1983. The progress was viewed by many people who came to watch. An arcade was designed by Sydney architect Mark Day and built by Sandbrook Brothers of Sydney in 1888 for local civic leader and businessman Alexander Malcolm. Known then as the Royal Arcade, it housed one of Australia's first regional stock exchanges, the Charters Towers Stock Exchange from 1890. At one time the price of gold was set in that very Arcade, an indication of the importance of the Charters Towers' economy at the time. All aboard the Southern Downs Steam Railway! This Mainline Tourist Heritage Railway and rail museum was established in Warwick in 1995. Southern Downs Steam Railway has restored a Heritage C17 Steam Locomotive to operational condition. C17, is a steam locomotive with eight driving wheels and a 17" cylinder, originally built between 1920 and 1953. Southern Downs Steam Railway operates steam train tours from Warwick to Stanthorpe, Toowoomba and Inglewood at select times during the year - see the website for details. You'll find the Warwick Railway Precinct on the corner of Hamilton Street and Fitzroy Street where the old Warwick Locomotive Depot used to be, (closed in 1970). This site was chosen as the original train 'turntable' was still in place. A not for profit organisation, most of the restoration work has been completed by 'work for the dole' participants. They have restored and re-built the locomotive sheds, workshops, water tower, repairs to the turntable, relaying of railway lines and erecting fencing. Now that the work is completed, volunteers have put up their hands to continue the restoration of the old railway carriages. Sarina is situated 36 kilometres south of Mackay and 300 kilometres north of Rockhampton on the Bruce Highway. The Historical Centre is part of the 'Field of Dreams' complex on the southern outskirts of the township. The Historical Centre is the former St Anne's Catholic Convent building. The building was built in 1923 as a Presbytery for the Catholic Priest in Sarina but when the first group of Sister's of Mercy were appointed to the town in 1925 the building became the Convent. A number of additions have been made to the original building so that they could take in boarders. On 19 January 2001 it was relocated to its present site at the 'Field of Dreams' and renovated to become the Historical Centre. A snapshot of life in the early 1900's is in store for visitors to Yarraman Heritage Centre. Set on two and three quarter acres in the heart of Yarraman, the centre comprises eight historic buildings, including what was once a Sisters of Mercy Convent. This two story building is a beautiful example of its time - the internal walls are stained tongue and groove crows ash timber. Visitors will also find the Yarraman Railway Station, Arthur Brown's Butcher Shop, a typical slab hut circa-1921 , and a farmer's cottage circa-1930.
