El Rocco Jazz Cellar

154 Brougham St, Woolloomooloo NSW 2011

El Rocco is the oldest jazz cellar in Australia and boasts a history that stretches back over 50 years making it a legend in its own right. Back in the 1950s El Rocco established its place in music folklore and played a significant part in creating some of the music industry's most treasured and respected artists.

Both Frank Sinatra and Sarah Vaughan graced the small stage to the delight of onlookers, a line up that would have made even The Cavern Club's mouth water. Liverpool's Cavern Club also initially opened its doors as a jazz club in the 1950s before gradually being infiltrated by other styles of music. Similarly El Rocco is no longer just Sydney's heart of jazz, it has now on re-opening become host to a diverse array of live entertainment 7 nights a week.

El Rocco is enchantingly intimate and alluringly atmospheric, a charm that is continually illusive to modern venues lost in a wilderness of renovations. The walls echo with the sound of days gone by, the cellar is quite simply alive with history. The close proximity of the audience to the stage creates the illusion of the performer's energy and passion becoming the listener's oxygen. El Rocco offers artists a back drop of ambience that will enhance every moment of a performance.

Established over a century ago, the Old Fitzroy Hotel is one of Sydney’s few remaining character pubs. Located in historic Woolloomooloo, the hotel remains a hub for the city’s local community, as well as its artists, musicians, actors, writers and people seeking an original place to meet. In a pub culture decimated by misguided refurbishment and thoughtless renovation, the Old Fitzroy stands proud as a place of character and substance.

The hotel has two bars, a bistro and is the home to one of Sydney’s first truly independent live theatres. It offers one of the city’s largest selections of tap beers, wines by the glass, and affordable meals all within a relaxed and charming environment. From street seating to lounge areas, a sunny balcony and an open fireplace, the Old Fitzroy truly has something for everyone.
