Gunnamatta Beach

1100 Truemans Road, Fingal VIC 3939
Gunnamatta Beach in Fingal is an exposed, high energy, 3km stretch of beach with a wide, rip dominated surf zone. It is located in the Mornington Peninsula National Park and is part of the 30km long sandy and rocky coast that extends from Cape Schanck to Point Nepean. Truemans Road runs out through the dunes to the beach, where there is a large car park and the surf lifesaving club. The beach faces south-west, exposing it to high westerly winds and waves. The waves average 1.9 metres and combine with the medium sand to produce a 150 metre wide single bar surf zone. The bar is cut by strong rips every 300m, together with additional permanent rips next to major reefs and rocks. Gunnamatta offers the best surf breaks on the Mornington Peninsula. Good breaks are found down the beach past the surf club, in front of the first and second car parks, and up the beach at the Pumping Station. Deep rip holes and gutters, together with rocks and reefs, are a permanent feature of this beach and make it a popular spot for beach and rock fishing. This is a very hazardous beach for swimming with usually high waves and strong rips close to shore. Stay between the flags, on the bar and away from the rips, rocks and reefs. No dogs allowed....

58-60 Abbotsford Street, Sorrento VIC 3943
Coppins Track runs between Diamond Bay and Sorrento Ocean Beach. It is a 3km guided historic walk that winds along the cliff tops tracing the history of the area over the last 100 years. The track follows sections of the original 1800s limestone paved footpath. Numbered pegs along the track correspond with the Coppins Track Park Note and lead you to several lookouts with spectacular coastal scenery. A circuit walk east of Diamond Bay provides access to historic St Pauls Lookout, a strategic observation site for the early settlers and gives stunning views over the Bay of Islands. Continuing west for 1km, follow Coppins Track past the steps to St Pauls Beach and on to Sorrento Back Beach where there are toilets, drinking water, a Surf Lifesaving clubhouse and café. This walk can be completed in either direction, and can be extended as part of the Coastal Walk. The Coastal walk along the southern side of the Mornington Peninsula offers spectacular scenery stretching 30kms between Cape Schanck and the Point Nepean National Park. The Coastal Walk encompasses many smaller sections of Ocean Beach walking trails, some along gravel tracks and parts along the sandy beaches. It changes from rugged rocky ocean coast at Cape Schanck to dense coastal vegetation along the way and finally to the famous sandy surf beaches through Rye and Sorrento. Rye Ocean Beach

Rye Ocean Beach Access Road, St Andrews Beach VIC 3941
Rye Ocean Beach is located inside the Mornington Peninsula National Park, and natural sand dunes back the length of this four kilometre long beach. Access to the beach is via a large car park at the end of Sandy Road. The eastern end can also be accessed from walking tracks through the dunes at Ocean Drive, St Andrews with steep access to the beach below. The beach is a popular beach for experienced surfers due to numerous reef breaks along the long stretch of exposed sandy coast. Other popular activities include fishing and walking. Swimming is not advised at this unpatrolled beach as conditions can be hazardous due to large waves, strong currents and submerged rocky reefs. As this back beach is also part of the Mornington Peninsula National Park, it is home to several vulnerable native species including the nationally significant Hooded Plover. Rye is a great place to spot these very small, well camouflaged shorebirds which feed in the intertidal zone. The Plovers lay their eggs directly onto the sand between the high-tide mark and the foredune. You can help their plight by avoiding the soft sand near the dunes and keeping away from nest sites. Dogs are not permitted....
