Mona Vale is effectively two separate beaches separated by a broad ocean rock platform. Waves that roll in along the southern edge of the platform surge into a gully that allows them to break smoothly and with considerable power. The undertow this creates can be troublesome to swimmers, so it’s just as well the gully is right beside the surf club’s patrolled swimming area. Heading south towards Warriewood, Mona Vale opens up as a series of fun, uncrowded beach breaks known as Cooks Terrace. The bay to the north of Mona Vale proper is called The Basin, and here you’ll find a small right-hand reef break, perfect for cruising on a long board. The rock platform which splits the beach in two has a 25 metre ocean-fed lap pool (free entry) and a smaller pool for the children. ...

Newport Beach

Newport faces due east so is open to swell coming from any direction. A jumble of rocks 250 metres south of the north headland known as The Peak shapes two separate breaks that attract a highly skilled local surfing tribe. Waves along the middle section of the beach are dependent on sandbanks and tend to close out without offering much for board-riders, but that leaves more room for swimmers and body-boarders. The south headland peters out into a part-submerged reef extending 450 metres out to sea, creating breaks in multiple directions which locals refer to as "crosswaves". One of Newport's most distinctive features is a broad flat rock platform at the south end of the beach. The full-size saltwater lap pool atop the platform is an iconic feature of Sydney's northern beaches, having been a favourite subject of revered Australian photographer Max Dupain in the 1930s and 1950s....

Palm Beach is the exclusive, high-end of Sydney's long stretch of the Northern Beaches; it is everything you'd expect from the insular-peninsula amid the playground of the nation's rich and famous. This section of the beach is usually where you find the surfers, joggers and hikers on the Barrenjoey Lighthouse bushwalk. The southern end of Palm Beach is a more protected environment for swimming. Northern Beaches

Newport Beach

Newport faces due east so is open to swell coming from any direction. A jumble of rocks 250 metres south of the north headland known as The Peak shapes two separate breaks that attract a highly skilled local surfing tribe. Waves along the middle section of the beach are dependent on sandbanks and tend to close out without offering much for board-riders, but that leaves more room for swimmers and body-boarders. The south headland peters out into a part-submerged reef extending 450 metres out to sea, creating breaks in multiple directions which locals refer to as "crosswaves". One of Newport's most distinctive features is a broad flat rock platform at the south end of the beach. The full-size saltwater lap pool atop the platform is an iconic feature of Sydney's northern beaches, having been a favourite subject of revered Australian photographer Max Dupain in the 1930s and 1950s....

Avalon Beach

Over the last decade or so Avalon has become the favoured "sea-change" destination for Sydney-siders looking to adopt the surfer lifestyle. As a result, the board-riding community here is large and enthusiastic but the skill level varies greatly so it's a good idea to watch for a bit before paddling into the fray. North Avalon breaks along the north headland and a nearby sandbank and attracts lots of older longboarders who don't always succeed in getting out of each other's way. South Avalon is centred on a triangle-shaped sandbank near the 25 metre ocean rock pool (free entry) that generates a mix of fun easy waves. The edge of the south cliff is known as Little Avalon, and here the swell sucks up hard on a shallow rock shelf to produce fast-barrelling tube rides....

Narrabeen Beach

Narrabeen Beach is one of Australia's iconic surfing and swimming beaches. Over three kilometres of sand stretch from Long Reef in the south to the Narrabeen Lagoon entrance in the north, with four surf lifesaving clubs along the beach providing qualified, volunteer lifesaver patrols to protect swimmers and surf/beach users. Swimmers should always swim between the flags which are erected while there are patrols present (each Saturday, Sunday and Public Holiday). There are numerous rips along the beach. Narrabeen Beach Surf Life Saving Club is located in the centre of the beach in a large park with picnic tables, toilets, showers (external) and a popular children's play area/picnic area/barbecue. The Surf Club has recently completed extensive rebuilding and with a floor-to-ceiling ocean vista and beautiful polished wooden floors, now offers a very popular venue for weddings and functions....

Barrenjoey Lighthouse

Barrenjoey Lighthouse sits at Sydney’s most northern point - Barrenjoey Head at Palm Beach. Positioned 91 metres above sea level, the lighthouse can be reached by a couple of walks. Take the picturesque one kilometre walking track to the top, which is an easy walk offering outstanding views along the track. Or for those who are keen for a challenging short hike, take the Smugglers track to the top. Getting its name from the customs officers who built the track around 1850 to monitor any smugglers bringing contraband into Broken Bay, it now offers a steeper and shorter trek to the lighthouse. Don’t worry though, the walk isn’t as hard as it looks and is well worth the effort. Bring your camera or your binoculars if you’re whale watching. Or you may simply want to capture the panoramic views of Broken Bay, Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park and the Central Coast. It is an easy daytrip from Sydney and is a great place to bring overseas visitors - they may recognise the lighthouse from Home and Away. Afterwards, head to the Summer Bay Surf Club for an ice-cream or cold drink. ...

Mona Vale Beach

Mona Vale is effectively two separate beaches separated by a broad ocean rock platform. Waves that roll in along the southern edge of the platform surge into a gully that allows them to break smoothly and with considerable power. The undertow this creates can be troublesome to swimmers, so it’s just as well the gully is right beside the surf club’s patrolled swimming area. Heading south towards Warriewood, Mona Vale opens up as a series of fun, uncrowded beach breaks known as Cooks Terrace. The bay to the north of Mona Vale proper is called The Basin, and here you’ll find a small right-hand reef break, perfect for cruising on a long board.
