The sculpture celebrates the life of poet CJ Dennis, creator of the Sentimental Bloke. Father, James Dennis, was licensee of the Beetaloo Reservoir Hotel from 1892 to 1909. A similar sculpture resides at the Auburn Hotel. Both were also commissioned by the Rocky River Historic and Art Society to commemorate the 110th birthday of CJ Dennis on 1986, an event that won a Tourism Award.

One of Laura's most famous former residents is C. J. Dennis (September 1876 - June 1938), author of well known poem 'The Songs of a Sentimental Bloke' amongst other Aussie yarns. His 1916 publication of The Sentimental Bloke sold 65,000 copies in its first year, and by 1917 he was the most prosperous poet in Australian history. A larger than life copper sculpture of this balladeer proudly stands in the main street, outside one of the local art galleries. There is also a bust of CJ Dennis located in Hughes Street at the Civic Centre. Laura was the home of CJ Dennis, he represents the personality of the town combined with Australia's literature history. Make sure you visit him while visiting Laura!

The Laura Information Outlet is located in Hughes Street, the main street of Laura, a small town in the Southern Flinders region of South Australia. The centre is run by volunteers and aims to be open from 10am to 4pm every day. The centre provides visitors and locals with holiday information for all of South Australia and Broken Hill, including when possible the particular local knowledge so helpful when visitors are here for the first time. With the growing interest in locally produced food and drink, the centre specialises in local products. With the Golden North Ice Cream manufacturer just down the street, visitors can view a four minute video of the production line in action (and taste the delicious Giant Twins next door). Walking guide and bus guide tours can be booked. There are local souvenirs and postcards as well as photocopying services. Programs for the annual Laura Folk Fair and entry forms for the Folk Fair Art Exhibition are also available upon request via email in March each year. ...

Famous for its rock art, Quinkan Country contains a large and dramatic body of prehistoric rock paintings. These galleries have been identified as being at least 15000 to 30000 years old and have been included on the Australian Heritage Estate and listed by UNESCO as being among the top 10 rock art sites in the world. People from many countries visit this remote location to view the rock art and gain some understanding of the Aboriginal stories associated with this magnificent sandstone landscape. The paintings and engravings in the numerous Galleries are a pictorial record of ancestral spirits and through them represent the laws, socialisation, spirituality and cultural practices that are at the core of Aboriginal life and identity and their connection to the land. Rock Art from the region provides an amazing pictorial record of Aboriginal integration with the Australian landscape for a period of at least 27000 years. People visit these sites to develop an understanding of the Aboriginal stories associated with the sandstone landscape of the region. This landscape features many areas of weathered and eroded rock that has shaped this wondrous landscape into the escarpments, rocky outcrops hills, and the river valleys that are seen today.

Quinkan Country is rich in Aboriginal history and home to world famous rock art sites. The small township of Laura is located in the heart of Quinkan Country and is home to a wonderful new attraction of the region - the Quinkan and Regional Cultural Centre. Quinkan Country also bears witness to Queensland's pioneering heritage. Gold rushes, historic railways and pastoralism are part of the fascinating and continuing story. The Quinkan and Regional Cultural Centre is the first stop for all travellers to Laura. The Quinkan Centre showcases all aspects of Quinkan Country including Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal heritage and the natural environment. Visitor Information facilities are available for all the National Parks of Cape York Peninsula as well as most of the popular attractions of the region. The Centre also has arts and crafts from Cape York available for sale as well as a select range of hot and cold beverages. Guided tours can only be booked through the Centre, including guided tours to world famous Aboriginal rock art galleries such as Split Rock, Mushroom Rock and Giant Horse Gallery and most spectacularly the Quinkan Galleries. These tours are guided by the most experienced Indigenous guides in Cape York.

This iconic remote park has a rich and diverse landscape that features spectacular wetlands and river systems. In the north, grasslands and woodlands, wetlands, coastal estuaries, mangroves and mudflats, are prominent, while in the south, sandstone hills and escarpments dominate the landscape. Lakefield is a wildlife refuge for threatened species including the red goshawk, Lakeland Downs mouse and spectacled hare-wallaby. Hann and Kalpowar crossings are two of the many significant Aboriginal cultural heritage sites found in this landscape. Bush camp beside a waterhole at one of many camping areas. Take your pick from popular busy camping areas with all facilities or camp sites that are remote bush getaways. Visit the Old Laura Homestead for a brush with the pastoral history of the cape. Fish for barramundi in the waterholes. Take your binoculars and marvel at the diversity of waterbirds at Low Lake. Admire the beautiful lotus-lilies carpeting Red and White Lily lagoons. Explore the Kalpowar discovery walking track or take your bicycle or trail-bike along the network of internal roads throughout the park. This is croc country so remember to be croc wise!
