The St Marks Church is situated in Church Street in the village of Appin. Building on the church commenced in 1840 and St Marks was consecrated in 1843. The stone walls are an attractive pale golden colour and the church now has a corrugated iron roof. There is a small cemetery with burials dating from 1840 onwards. Broughton Pass offers its best views after periods of heavy rain when the Cascade Waterfall, upstream from the bridge and weir, spills its waters into the Cataract River. The Broughton Pass Weir was built in the early 1880s and was part of the Upper Nepean Water Supply Scheme. Access is via Wilton Road just south of Appin. There is no access to the weir area as it is a restricted area of Sydney Water Catchment....

Maldon is part of the Wollondilly Shire and is popular for its outdoor activities such as bushwalking, swimming, picnicking and go karting for the more adventurous. It is part of the main southern railway that winds it way to Picton and beyond and is home to the Maldon Cement Works. Picton boasts a modern shopping centre and a vibrant collection of main street businesses, including gift shops, cafes, restaurants, pubs and clubs. The free self guided Picton Walking Tour brochure is a great way to discover the town by foot and learn about the local history and heritage as you wander through the town. Cataract Dam may be impacted by bushfires in the region. Please note that conditions in Wollondilly may change over the Christmas period. Before undertaking any travel, please visit the NSW Rural Fire Service website to check affected areas and road closures. Cataract is the oldest and possibly the most picturesque dam in Sydney's water supply system. Completed in 1907, the 56 metre high dam holds water from a 130 square kilometre catchment, forming an 850 hectare lake with a capacity of 94,300 megalitres. The dams of the Upper Nepean collect water from the catchments of the Cataract, Cordeaux, Avon and Nepean rivers, which are tributaries of the Upper Hawkesbury-Nepean River. These systems supply water to the Macarthur and Illawarra regions, the Wollondilly Shire, and metropolitan Sydney. Facilities include picnic shelters, electric barbecues, drinking water, toilets, disabled toilets, playground and viewing areas....

Named after the village of Appin in Scotland, this historic town dating back to 1811 is one of the earliest colonial villages in the colony of Sydney. In 1824, explorers Hume and Hovell commenced their expedition to Port Phillip from this district, and a monument stands on the road from Campbelltown commemorating the beginning of that journey. Today, Appin has many colonial buildings to admire including the Appin public school, historic churches, and the Old Rectory. Enjoy the rugged beauty of the area on the drive between Appin and Douglas Park, through Broughtons Pass and crossing the Cataract River and Cataract Dam. Pheasants Nest had the first ever recorded sightings by white settlers of koalas, lyrebirds and wombats. It was an ex-convict, John Wilson, who noted the three animals in his diary describing the lyrebird as a pheasant, hence the name Pheasants Nest and recorded the koala as being known to the Aboriginal people as Cullawine....

If you’re looking to take your mountain bike out for a long ride, 10B cycling trail offers the perfect day out. At 15 kilometres long, it starts near the Appin Road entrance of Dharawal National Park and follows an unsealed road through open forest and woodlands along a sandstone ridge. This is a great bike ride for small groups and families with older children. The last three kilometres present more of a challenge, when the trail descends into Stokes Creek Gorge, leading to a good slog back up to the park’s northern entrance at Wedderburn. Pack a picnic and your binoculars because at the creek crossing, there’s a broad rock platform where you can stop for a break. Birds, including the raucous yellow-tailed black cockatoo, inhabit the area....
