You've got the four-wheel-drive and you've got the spirit of adventure; let that lead you on the outback trip of a lifetime through southern Queensland to some of Australia's most remote and iconic outback townships. Getting away early is easy when you're eager to explore new destinations, so there's no doubt that Brisbane will be in your rearview mirror before you can say "let's go on a road trip". However, a cautious traveller is a safe traveller, so it pays to check RACQ's updated road conditions before you leave for very remote areas like Birdsville and Innamincka. Also, ensure you pack enough food and water to last you a few days in case you get stranded outback; and an extra spare tyre won't hurt, either. Tell a few loved ones where you're going and when to expect you to arrive (don't forget to call them and let them know you got there safe and sound) so they can raise the alarm if necessary - just in case!...

The Far West Adventure is a self drive tour which begins in the Central West heartland town of Longreach, passes through the Far West shires of Barcoo, Diamantina and Boulia, and finally finishes in the North West town of Mount Isa. Allow at least one week for this 1394 kilometre adventure loop where you'll discover historic and remote outback towns, meet local characters and hear their stories. Today, travel west and your journey will still be filled with adventure but luckily, you don't have to take the rutted bush tracks of the past. Mostly sealed bitumen roads lead to you to new and exciting places, where the people are friendly and appreciative you've made the journey into their part of Australia, and the views different each step of the way. The Warrego Way starts at the Sunshine State's capital, Brisbane, and finishes in the iconic and remote Birdsville. Along the way, you can see ancient trees from the dinosaur age, endangered mammals, unwind in the soothing waters from the sub artesian basin, delight in yarns told over country bars, or just relax and enjoy the brilliant sunsets and starry nights....

The Matilda Way is one road that most definitely leads to adventure, and a different one each day. The fully sealed 1812 kilometre highway stretches from the New South Wales border all the way to the Gulf of Carpentaria, from Cunnamulla to Karumba. Traversing the 'real outback' the route is filled with friendly local characters, unique attractions and unspoiled natural sites. Four days is a comfortable drive, depending on how long you spend discovering the unique charms of each township. Along the Matilda Way you will discover little known secrets, experience the raw history of the region and natural wonders of the vast and ancient landscapes. As you're travelling, check the byways along the route; there are plenty of side-trips that add to the overall outback experience. Just remember you are sharing the road with huge road trains, livestock and native animals, take care and give way, you'll protect your vehicle and the truckies will thank you for it. Begin your journey in Longreach in Queensland's heartland then follow the scenic back roads to Winton via Lochern National Park, Stonehenge and Jundah. Follow the Lochern Habitat Drive and explore the 20 kilometres of Thomson River frontage. Take a Four Wheel Drive adventure on the John Egan Pioneer Drive and discover magnificent landscapes sculptured by nature over millions of years. Breathe in the expansive views from Swanvale Lookout on the majestic Johnston Range. In Jundah, follow the Settlers Nature Drive along the Thomson River, a great spot to boil the billy, have a picnic or throw in a line. Discover the world's only recorded Dinosaur Stampede at Lark Quarry Conservation Park where you can view up to 3300 footprints left over 95 million years ago by a herd of over 300 dinosaurs. This drive includes a mix of sealed and unsealed roads and therefore a Four Wheel Drive vehicle is recommended....

From the world heritage listed Great Barrier Reef and pristine beaches of north Queensland to the rugged rocky outcrops and red sand of north-west Queensland and into the Northern Territory, the Overlander's Way will take you through architecturally rich historic towns, dinosaur centres and to the home of some of the world's most quirky events; without even leaving the bitumen! Follow in the footsteps of Australia's droving heroes, who drove mobs of thousands of cattle from the Northern Territory across Queensland's vast interior to the coastal markets and discover the unspoilt beauty of Outback Queensland....

The Drovers and Pioneers Trail includes a mix of sealed and unsealed roads therefore a Four Wheel Drive vehicle is recommended. Begin your journey in Mount Isa city in Queensland's vast North West Outback then follow the Diamantina Development Road through spectacular outback scenery en route to Boulia, capital of the Channel Country. Turn right onto the unsealed Urandangie North Road and follow the 'unusual' signs to the remote township of Urangangie, once an important centre for travellers and drovers on the Georgina and other stock routes. Take time to explore nearby waterholes on the Georgina, ideal for fishing and bird watching before following the unsealed South Road loop to Boulia with its rich grazing heritage, pioneering stories and the mysterious Min Min Light....
