Only 27 kilometres from Tenterfield, Boonoo Boonoo National Park has a stunning waterfall, secluded swimming holes, hiking tracks, camping areas, accommodation and picnic spots. Alice didn’t have a chance and she and Banjo married in 1903. Today, Boonoo Boonoo (pronounced bunna-bunoo) is still the ultimate romantic setting, especially after a good rainfall. From the lookout is an uninterrupted view of the Boonoo Boonoo River cascading over the granite cliff edge to become a spectacular waterfall that plunges 210 metres into the gorge below. Nearby, you’ll find walking tracks and shady places to picnic. Secluded rock pools along the river, lined by wildflower-filled bushland, are the perfect way to cool off on a hot day....

If Boonoo Boonoo National Park were a house, then Boonoo Boonoo Falls picnic area would be its living room. Not only is it an ideal place for a picnic or barbecue breakfast, lunch or dinner, but most other park attractions can be accessed from here. So meet up with friends, family, your birdwatching group or hiking crew and make the most of this great spot. From the picnic area, it’s only a short easy bushwalk along Boonoo Boonoo Falls walking track to the lookout. Here, you can gaze across the gorge to the awesome sight of Boonoo Boonoo River falling 210 metres down the side of the granite cliff face. Further on are swimming holes, the beginning of River track and access to other hiking trails. Look out for wallabies and kangaroos around the picnic area, especially at either end of the day. Bring along your binoculars for a spot of birdwatching; woodland birds are often seen grazing in the overhead canopy....

The track takes you through dry eucalypt forest and vegetation in the riparian zone – the interface between the land and the waterway – a little way back from the river. Make the most of the two river visits by having a dip, a swim, or at the very least by splashing someone in your group. If you’ve approached the river quietly, you may be lucky enough to spot a platypus. Around sunrise and sunset, wallabies and kangaroos might be seen grazing or drinking at the river....

Boonoo Boonoo Falls walking track offers a short easy walk from Falls picnic area along the southern side of Boonoo Boonoo Gorge. Go for a wander while the barbecue lunch is being cooked, or walk your food off afterwards. Take your time along this trail to notice the various wildlife habitats and plant communities such as rainforest, dry eucalypt forest and grassy woodland. Can you recognise the flowers of the boronia, banksia and grevillea that add their colours to this bushland? Keep an eye out too for the threatened brush-tailed rock wallaby that makes its home in this granite landscape. The grand finale of this track is the viewing platform that overlooks the fabulous Boonoo Boonoo Falls where, legend has it, Banjo Patterson proposed to his sweetheart Alice Walker. Over the sound of the pounding waterfall, Banjo was relieved to hear, or at least lip-read, an unmistakable ‘yes’....
