Dalfarras

254 O'Neils Rd, Nagambie VIC 3608

Launched in 1991, Dalfarras wines are a reflection of the winermakers skills, Alister Purbrick and his artist wife Rosa. Alister uses local Nagambie Lakes fruit, along with selections from other premium wine-producing regions in Australia, to produce crowd-pleasing styles crafted for immediate enjoyment. They are then "dressed to impress" with selected works from Rosa's extensive portfolio of artworks reproduced on the labels. In August 2005 Dalfarras found its home with the opening of the Tahbilk Wetlands Cafe. The contemporary design and striking impact of the Cafe provided the ideal venue to showcase not only the Dalfarras range of wines but also selected artworks from Rosa's collection. Both the varietals offered and featured artworks have changed and developed over time as you would expect from such a progressive label. This is no better highlighted than with the current offerings featuring both traditional and innovative varietal blendings such as the Marsanne-Viognier, Shiraz-Viognier, Viognier-Pinot Gris and the Cabernet-Sangiovese. Alongside established straight varietal favourites Sauvignon Blanc and Shiraz with Rosa drawing her inspiration for the labels dressing these releases from the Wetlands area itself. Visitors to the Wetlands Cafe and Dalfarras Tasting Bar and Gallery can enjoy unique and exclusive varietal wines, contemporary cafe fare, gallery exhibitions, a cruise (or walk) in the Wetlands and Wildlife Reserve or all the above! 'Dalfarras is based at the Tahbilk Wetlands Café, part of an admirable and impressive initiative aimed at conserving the unique environment of the beautiful Nagambie Lakes. Cruises are available through the reserve and can be combined with a stroll through this pristine environment. Make sure you visit historic Tahbilk Winery and Vineyard nearby; it's a national treasure. The modern Dalfarras wines, and their more traditional Tahbilk cousins, are essential tasting while you're there.' Review by Ralph Kyte-Powell.

Fowles Wine

1175 Lambing Gully Road, Avenel VIC 3664

Fowles Wine is an awarding winning cool climate wine producer in the ruggedly beautiful region of the Strathbogie Ranges, central Victoria.

Fowles Wine Cellar Door and Cafe is located at the foothills of the stunning Strathbogie Ranges, just 1.5 hours north of Melbourne.

For a relatively young winery, in the context of Australia's 200 year wine heritage, Fowles Wine has been grabbing attention with its winemaking prowess and wonderful hospitality. Named as a 'Winery to Watch' by Wine Spectator Magazine, a Five Star winery by James Halliday and Victoria's Best Tourism Winery (three years in a row), Fowles Wine crafts elegant cool climate wines that can be enjoyed alongside freshly prepared modern European dishes featuring the finest local produce.

A little bit more about Fowles Wine...

Fowles Wine is renowned for making wine to match with food. In fact, what really sets them apart is their Ladies who Shoot their Lunch and Are you Game? wines - the world's first blended specifically to match with wild game meat.

These wines are inspired by Chief Executive Matt Fowles' love of 'real food' - wild meat and home grown vegetables from the Strathbogie Ranges. A responsible hunter and avid food and wine man, Matt wanted to create wines that would match the texture and intensity of wild game (which is quite different from commercially reared meat). While slightly eccentric, the philosophy that underpins Ladies who Shoot their Lunch and Are you Game? is genuine and honest and the wines themselves modern and exciting.

In fact, the Cellar Door Cafe team have created a specialised food and wine flight called 'The Gamekeepers Platter' that features four tastes of game matched with their food wines to provide insights into their wild philosophy.

Fowles Wine also produces Stone Dwellers, a wine range that showcases the best varietal examples from the Strathbogie Ranges. All of their wines can be enjoyed in the welcoming and friendly atmosphere of the Cellar Door Cafe. Listed in The Age Good Food Guide for the fifth year in a row, Head Chef Adele Aiken presents the best local produce in freshly prepared and wonderfully presented dishes.

The passion and warmth of the Fowles Wine team makes for a truly memorable food and wine experience.

See the Fowles Wine experience for yourself on YouTube here.

Wine varieties available:

Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Arneis, Vermentino, Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Sangiovese, Merlot, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon.

A bit more about our region:

The Strathbogie Ranges are located about 100 kilometres north of Melbourne. High altitude and ruggedly beautiful, the ranges are characterised by ancient granite boulders - statues of a turbulent geological history that goes back 360 million years. Today, the nutrient poor granitic soils and cool continental climate are ideal for producing intense wines that are full of character and elegance. At elevations of up to 600m, the Strathbogie Ranges is one of Australia's highest wine regions and offers stunning views across the central Victorian plains.

Central Victoria itself is also home to some of Australia's finest wine, food and tourism experiences. So for more information about places to stay and things to do check out Goulburn River Valley Tourism here.

Tar & Roses Wines

61 Vickers Lane, Nagambie VIC 3608
The Tar & Roses range of wines consists of European varietals and grew out of the desire to make iconic European wines at home in Central Victoria. Don and Narelle have drawn from their overseas experience, particularly in Spain, to craft the range in a style that reflects their interpretation of these classic varieties. Fruit for the range is sourced mainly from the renowned premium wine region of Heathcote as well as from the Strathbogie Ranges, Nagambie, Northeast Victoria and the Priorat, Spain. Tar & Roses are the main descriptors for Nebbiolo, the king of red wine in Italy and one of the wines within the range. Don and Narelle also released their first Riesling under the Tar & Roses brand in late 2014. This Riesling is named after Don, acknowledging his 40 years of making award winning Riesling.
Baptista - David Traeger Logo and Images

Baptista - David Traeger

139 High Street, Nagambie VIC 3608
Baptista Wines is a small family owned wine producer, with limited production of hand made wines grown and made by David Traeger, who has been making wines in this part of Victoria for over 30 years. Baptista is an iconic old vine Shiraz produced from vines planted in 1891 at Graytown, between Nagambie and Heathcote in Central Victoria. These old but deep rooted vines have been producing exceptional grapes for 122 years, and the wines reflect the intensity expected from old vines. The Three Centuries label recognises the place that ancient vines have in winemaking in Australia. This wine is a blend of Shiraz from low yielding vineyards in the Heathcote Region that have their origin in three centuries, a component from this 19th century vineyard, through to vineyards planted in the 20th and now 21st centuries. Each vineyard component has its own distinct flavours and as they are of varying ages these differences add complexity and character. The Maranoa brand has only one wine under its banner - being Verdelho, the white variety originating in Portugal, and is one of the classic grape varieties in the making of Madiera. It has been planted in Australia since the very early 1800's and is nowadays made primarily as a dry white. Verdelho as a variety ripens early and shows fantastic tropical fruit characters, as well as peach, lemongrass and guava aromas, flowing through to palates of mouth filling intensity and long length. Baptista's cellar is located in picturesque Nagambie and as you descend into the original building, built in 1872 as a winery you are entering a wonderful Australian cellar, and it is the ideal area for tasting wines.
