What is Bonsai? Bonsai is a horticultural art. Woody plants are grown in shallow containers and styled to resemble scale-models of the mature tree in nature. Bonsai need sunlight, air movement, water, nutrients and a substrate in which to grow. That's the horticultural element, and it's the same as in any other form of gardening. The art of bonsai also involves styling, training and pruning a living tree to the shape you want, then matching it to a complementary container to create the desired overall effect with drama, strength, grace, elegance or whimsy. Bonsai Island teaches that Bonsai is not about the age of the tree, per se, it is about the artistry and beauty of the design.
