The spectacular waterways of the coastal town of Tuross Head are the setting for this easy and enjoyable family ride. The ride follows the Coila Lake, ocean and Tuross River foreshores on the off-road shared pathway. There are magnificent ocean views, dramatic headlands, rocky outcrops, the Norfolk Pines and birdlife for enthusiast photographers. There is interpretative signage along the route and a brief stroll into the Memorial Gardens at Plantation Point is worthwhile. Soak up the coastal views from One Tree Point, a lookout just a short walk off the cycleway. Start your ride from Kyla Oval, Hector McWilliams Drive and continue to the beach car park at Tuross Boulevard south. Ride along the path until you connect with Olive Crescent, veer left into Nelson Parade. Continue until you arrive at the car park to the restaurants and boat sheds on Tuross Lake. Return distance is 12 kilometres.

Kayaking on Tuross Lake

All paddlers have plenty of kayaking options on this lavish lake scattered with estuaries and islands. The prospect of catching a glimpse of local wildlife such as birds, kangaroos and even emus makes for an exciting paddle. Launch into shallow water near the boat ramp on Nelson Parade or from Obrien's Boatshed on Nelson Parade, where Kayaks and Canoes can be hired. Route options include an 18 kilometre round trip north to Horse Island, then west up the estuary to and around Borang Lake, returning on the southern side of Horse Island. Another pleasurable two hour island paddle takes you south of Horse Island then around Cambathin Island, across to Deuaumba Island past the old bridge, returning to the launch point via the main channel. A variety of waterfront cafes and restaurants are available alongside the landing spots, with picnic tables, toilets and a playground nearby.

Mountain View is a spacious, family friendly cottage which has fantastic ocean, mountain and Tuross Lake views. It is located on the hill top overlooking the village with easy walking access via pathways to village shopping, the golf course, bowls club and a choice of beaches. You can listen to the birds chirping and the sound of the waves rolling in. With splendid views, on the upper level there is a well- equipped, open plan kitchen, lounge and dining room, with easy access to the front and back decks. The back deck is equipped for alfresco meals with a gas barbecue, dining setting and casual furniture. There is a spacious main bedroom with a queen bed on this level offer as well as a second bedroom with a double bed. In addition, there is a bathroom with a deep sunken bathtub with a shower over the bath and toilet and laundry facilities. On the lower level, there is a very spacious single bed room with three beds and a trundle bed which can accommodate four people. This is an excellent room for children with plenty of space to play....

Tuross Head is a place many visitors never want to leave. Spend time here and you are bound to meet someone who has done just that. Set on a low-lying headland perched between twin lakes, and with stunning ocean beaches stretching north and south, the small village is surrounded by magnificent waterways. The beach area to the north of the inlet is sublime, with the water ranging from crystal clear to deep blue as it alternates the sandy depths and shallows. The beach here has a knack for attracting driftwood and it’s not unusual to find sun-bleached castaway-style shelters, or impromptu abstract art forms, crafted by other beachgoers. Across the narrow inlet to the south, the long tapering sandbar that protects the lake becomes a wide beach forming the gateway to Eurobodalla National Park. A swim or kayak across the sparkling water to the sandbar, and time spent wading with the rays, fish and birds, is a life-affirming pleasure that lingers with you long after. Not far from the inlet, on the calm waters of Tuross Lake, is the small but enchanting waterfront café area. Once the working boat sheds and wharf for the commercial fishery, the original timber building and dock are largely unchanged. It’s a special place, and almost unique in allowing you to tie your kayak or boat up right next to your table, or cast a line while having a coffee. A meal here at sunset, watching the water, earth and sky shift through the spectrum of colours, is particularly fine. Tuross Lake here is renowned for large and plentiful flathead. Fed by the Tuross River, a network of natural channels provides hidden fishing holes, unexpected islands and sheltered picnic spots. On the opposite side of the peninsula, the smaller shallower Coila Lake is famous for large bream and small greenback prawns. Prawning, in season can be as simple as walking the shallows with a torch and scoop net, and is a relaxing and rewarding way to spend a summer evening with family and friends....

Paddle any distance, or up to 18.5 kilometres to circumnavigate the lake and under the highway bridge into Coila Creek at the northern end. Stay near the sheltered shores on windy days as it can get quite choppy. Bingi Dreaming Track

Follow in the footsteps of the Brinja-Yuin people as you walk the Bingi Dreaming track. Traditionally, Dreaming tracks or Song Lines link the places visited by Aboriginal people, the Bingi Dreaming track links campsites, ceremonial and trade sites, fresh water and plentiful coastal food sources. Along the way, you might see stone artefacts or patches of shell middens. The walk passes through different types of coastal habitat; there are great opportunities for birdwatching among the heathlands, forests and lakeshores and you’re likely to see kangaroos and wallabies relaxing in the sun. If you’re walking during whale watching season, be sure to stop off at one of the vantage points along the way for a glimpse of the majestic creatures, as well as panoramic views of Gulaga (Mount Dromedary) and Baranguba (Montague Island). Stretching from Congo in the north to Tuross Head in the south, you can start the 14 kilometre walk from either end, or break it up into a few shorter walks to enjoy over a couple of days. There are lots of places to stop for a swim or picnic along the way so don’t forget to take your swimmers and a towel....

Tuross Head Heritage Area

Small coastal vessels carried timber and produce from farms around Tuross Lake in the 1850's and 1860's, but attempts to make Tuross a port were frustrated by its difficult entrance. The 875 acre Tuross peninsula was acquired by Patrick Mylott in 1870. He built Tuross House, overlooking Coila and Tuross lakes, and farmed there until 1883 when he moved to Sydney to ensure his young daughter received appropriate operatic training. Eva, born at Tuross, became an internationally acclaimed opera singer and is commemorated with a plaque in Eva Mylott Park in Jutland Ave. Tuross Head was eventually developed as a tourist destination in the mid 1920's by Hector McWilliam. He purchased the property from Mylott's widow in 1925, subdivided it and sold the lots for holiday houses. He established a nine hole golf course and planted 200 Norfolk Island Pines around Tuross Head. These pines are McWilliam's distinctive legacy.
