Pimpama and Ormeau War Memorial

246 Creek Street, Pimpama QLD 4209

In church grounds at Pimpama, halfway between Brisbane and the Gold Coast, stands a stone memorial-a soldier statue, his head bowed, hands crossed and resting on his rifle, a tree trunk supporting him. It is, in fact, a replica of the original which was unveiled in 1919 following a public subscription. The original stood in the cemetery of Pimpama Uniting (previously Methodist) Church, a tribute to the seven local men who had died in WWI. It was produced by AL Petrie and Son of Toowong, the largest masonry firm in Queensland at the time; responsible for many WWI memorials. A series of relocations within the property have occurred, the most recent in 1993, when the replica was commissioned. This facsimile, positioned facing the Pacific Highway, was unveiled on ANZAC Day 1995. The old digger, which was in poor condition, was relocated to Miles Historical Village.

Sanctuary Cove

Riverside Drive, Sanctuary Cove QLD 4212
If you stand along the marina and use a little imagination, you can almost picture the famous Gold Coast white-shoe brigade who put Sanctuary Cove on the map during those crazy, hazy 1980s. While that kind of excess has long departed, the style synonymous with Sanctuary Cove remains in this exclusive master-planned community. This AUD2 billion sanctuary for the rich and famous was built in 1986 and offers a resort lifestyle with two championship golf courses, a marina, a swanky retail precinct with boutiques and restaurants and the five-star InterContinental Sanctuary Cove Resort. An impressive 300-plus berth Marina sits at the centre like the top of a wedding cake, and is considered a world-class facility with its capacity for super yachts. But you don't need the big bucks to enjoy a visit here with everything from houseboats, to party pontoons and luxury sailing boats on hire here. Cruise up the river and see how the other half lives as you sail past waterfront mansions. And if you're lucky you may even spot a pair of white shoes, or two....

Pimpama

Attenborough Boulevard, Pimpama QLD 4209
Utter the word Pimpama and most Queenslanders will instantly think of the succulent strawberries produced at the iconic Strawberry Farm which has sat along the highway enroute to the Gold Coast for eons. It makes perfect sense, given this area's rich farming history which dates back to the mid 1880s when arrowroot crops were first grown in the area, shortly followed by the first sawmill in South East Queensland. From 1868 Cobb & Co coach services terminated their trek from Brisbane here, which inspired the building of two hotels either side of Hotham Creek. While neither Cobb & Co nor the hotels exist today, Pimpama remains a pivotal point on the journey to the Gold Coast. Once you've had your fill of strawberry ice-cream, head to international-standard Gainsborough Greens Golf Course, home to Eastern Grey kangaroos. Strawberries and a roo or too, what's not to love about Pimpama? ...

Rungulla National Park Logo and Images

Rungulla National Park

Rungulla Shed Road, Gilberton QLD 4208
Rungulla National Park, 116 kilometres south west of Forsayth in north western Queensland, boasts a wide range of sandstone formations, including outcrops of large sculpted caves and pagoda-like sandstone features. In the drier months, you can use the sandy bed of the wide Gilbert River as a walking path to explore the park. Look for tracks of wildlife in the sand and relax in the welcome shade of overhanging riparian trees. The Gilbert River, and its spring-fed ecosystems and permanent waterholes provide many opportunities for observing wildlife. During the day, birds can be seen in the canopy and reptiles spotted in rocky crevices. The river and permanent springs in the park provide refuges for wildlife, especially as the water holes shrink in the drier months. Many animals are most active around dawn and dusk and nocturnal mammals may be seen at night by spotlight. Stay overnight in the camping area offering three separate bush camp sites close to either the Gilbert or the Percy River. Camping is not available during the wet season closure from November 1 to March 31. Image credits: James Altafer, Qld Govt (river); Nick Smith, Qld Govt (aerial)....
