Funcity Sunshine Logo and Images

Funcity Sunshine

486 Ballarat Road, Sunshine VIC 3020

Fun City Go Karts was the original brilliant idea of Darren Shaw, after seeing some great Go Kart Entertainment venues in Texas USA in Oct 1989. Darren came back to Australia and started a partnership with Jim Voliotis and his mate Shaun. Darren and Jim had been friends for some time and they both shared a passion with Super Sedan Racing.

They introduced Geoff Trewin into the partnership after Shaun left, and built the original "Fun City Go Karts" in Tottenham, on Sunshine road, where the Westco Jeans outlet is today. Fun City Go Karts opened to the Public on the 6th December 1990. In 1991 Darren and Geoff built a GoKart Track in Woodridge Queensland, a western suburb of Brisbane, that was very similar to Tottenham. We later sold the Track to Jim for his third share of Tottenham and his friend Ian who ran the business for a while before retiring. Jim has gone back to tow trucks in Qld, another one of his passions. Darren and Geoff also opened an outdoor Gokart Track at the Laverton outdoor market (Rubbles & Riches), we also sold this business off to Ian after he came back from Queensland.

Sun Theatre Logo and Images

Sun Theatre

8 Ballarat Street, Yarraville VIC 3013

The Sun originally opened in 1938 and was a single screen 1050 seat cinema - the most luxurious in the area. Most Saturday's were fully booked at the Sun; both a booking office and ticket counter were used to handle the large crowds. The SUN BOOKSHOP was the original candy bar. Imagine the buzz on a Saturday night which regularly sold out and 1050 patrons were in the foyer. Today we seat only 660 over 6 boutique cinemas, but, we still think our foyer gets mighty busy. Unique to the cinema was the pram room where babies in their prams were placed and given a number, if your baby started crying, your number was flashed on the screen. During the 50's and 60's TV was the new novelty and the crowds dwindled. To satisfy the new population in Yarraville the SUN became a Greek cinema in the 60's. It was eventually closed by the Health department for unsanitary carpets! The SUN became derelict over the next twenty years until the current owners purchased it in 1995. It was in a sad state, a mecca for white ants and a roof so leaky, the plaster ceiling had caved in on the seats. Vagrants had been at it too, graffiti and pilfering of many of the original art deco features had reduced her to little more than 4 brick walls. As the real estate agents would say "a true renovators dream!" The new owners began one of Melbourne’s most popular film societies from 1998 to 2003 which encouraged them to go all out and bring the SUN back to glory. The large auditorium has been divided into 4 cinemas and another 2 cinemas have recently been added to some land at the rear. Six stunning cinemas, all detailed in the art deco style, many with original details are now open to the public and screening the latest new release films.

Flemington Racecourse

Flemington Drive, Flemington VIC 3031

Flemington is the best-known and oldest continuing metropolitan racecourse in Australia – no wonder it was added to the National Heritage List in 2006!

The first race meeting held here took place on rough river flats beside the Maribyrnong River in March 1840, when Melbourne was barely five years old. It wasn't the very first documented horse race in Melbourne – that took place at a site near today's Southern Cross Station, in March 1838.

Of course, Flemington is synonymous with Australia's premier horse race, the Melbourne Cup, run here on the first Tuesday in November since 1861.

As well as the horses and the fashions of the Spring Racing Carnival, it's worth heading out to Flemington any time of the year to admire the landscaped gardens, take a walking tour and visit the Heritage Centre's exhibition of racing paraphernalia.

Jawbone Marine Sanctuary Logo and Images

Jawbone Marine Sanctuary

Accessed via Bayview St, Williamstown VIC 3016

Jawbone Marine Sanctuary, named after its shape, is located in Williamstown and protects 30ha of coastal waters. The little promontory, west of the beach at Williamstown, has been fenced off from the rest of the world for over 80 years by a coastal rifle range. This forgotten and unspoilt place is now considered a haven for coastal and marine life right next to Melbourne. Patches of all marine habitats from northern Port Phillip Bay are packed into this small area. On the west of the promontory, there is saltmarsh and the largest occurrence of mangroves within Port Phillip Bay. They also happen to be the only mangroves in Victoria which grow on a basalt coast. Offshore there are areas of fine clayey sand and patches of seagrass. The eastern side has a complete set of rocky environments. There are areas high up on the shore that only occasionally get wet from storm waves and submerged boulders and ledges that lie below the lowest tides. The soft basalt rock has weathered into smaller rocks and pools that support a full range of tidal life. In between the clay and rock lie some small sandy beaches.
