Paperbarks and mangrove forests line the many creeks and rivers in tranquil, unspoiled Russell River National Park. In this area the meandering Russell River joins forces with the Mulgrave River before entering the sea in a shared estuary. The access road runs between the beach and Bluemetal Creek up to the creek mouth. Bush camp in one of five secluded sites next to the beach. Fish at the mouth of the picturesque Bluemetal Creek mouth. Be aware of estuarine crocodiles.

Frankland Islands Dive Site

39568 - East Russell QLD 4861
Located south of Cairns, the Frankland Islands don’t see as many tourists as other destinations off this busy holiday city, making it the perfect destination for the snorkeler and less experienced diver. Surrounding the Frankland Islands are rocky reefs with a great coverage of hard and soft coral in depths to 12 metres. The most popular site to snorkel is Normanby Reef, and walking straight off the beach snorkelers can explore pretty coral gardens teaming with reef fish. For divers the most popular site is Round Island, with the rocky reefs here cut by ledges and caves. Exploring this site, divers will see nudibranchs, batfish, lionfish, coral cod, moray eels and the occasional turtle....
