Wilsons Headland

Wilsons Headland, Diggers Camp NSW 2462
Wilsons is essentially the Diggers Camp back beach, and what a splendid back beach it is. It’s accessible by walking south around Bare Point and Wilsons Headland, or more easily accessed by walking from the Wilsons Headland picnic area. Looking south from Wilsons headland, you’ll see Wooli in the distance, and what appears to be a solitary high-rise apartment block. It’s actually a water tower. Though there are a couple of wooden observation platforms overlooking the beach, there are no toilets or amenities here, and of course it’s not patrolled. It’s not a bad swimming beach and has been known to produce the odd nice peak for surfers, particularly on an east or nor’east swell. Be careful swimming though, there’s a few rips swirling and often an inshore gutter. Depending on the level of the sand that’s blown up at the base of the impressive wooden staircase, there’s either 98 or 99 steps in total back up to the picnic area. Just thought you would like to know....

Bare Point

Bare Point, Diggers Camp NSW 2462
A short walk – or drive – from Digger’s Camp takes you to the northern end of Wilson’s Headland, and the Boorkoom campground (which has just 10 clifftop campsites). This is the perfect place to set out for a walk along winding boardwalks to Bare Point. Bare seems an unfair name for this striking northern extremity of Wilsons Headland, dotted as it is with vantage points to watch the ocean smashing into the jagged rocks below, or being at eye level with sea eagles going about their melodramatic soaring, and let’s not get started on the whale-watching. Sure, you’re not likely to go swimming or surfing off Bare Point any time soon, and granted, the vegetation gets a bit sparse right out on the point, but it’s beautiful and elemental, and you’re more than likely to have it all to yourself....

Wooli Wooli River

River, Wooli NSW 2462
So good they had to name it twice! The Wooli Wooli River begins its journey in the Barcoongere State Forest. During its 34 kilometre length it passes through Newfoundland State Forest before meandering through the Yuraygir National Park. Being encased by nature ensures that it is one of the purest waterways in Australia. It is one of the best nurseries for the Sydney Rock Oyster which can be purchased in Wooli along with fish, crabs and lobsters freshly harvested by the local fishing fleet. The river can be negotiated for around 20 kilometres by canoe, kayak or stand-up paddleboard and kangaroos, emus, black-necked storks, brolgas, kingfishers, parrots and all manner of wildlife abound along the banks....

Minnie Water

42003 - Minnie Water NSW 2462
Good things come in small packages and Minnie Water is an absolute gem of a beach village! One of the best camping spots in NSW, Minnie Water indicates the halfway mark for the Yuraygir Coastal Walk. If you’re not doing the walk but would like a taste, there are easy walks to the north and south available for you to try! Just north of Minnie Water lies the fabulous Illaroo campground. This campground offers scenic beachside camping sites for caravans, tents and trailers. It’s great for fishing, swimming, canoeing, snorkelling and learning how to surf. Minnie is one of the older fishing settlements on the coast, due to good anchorage in the shelter of the southern reef. The properties that made it so suitable for fishermen in the days of old are exactly what makes it perfect for today’s holidaymakers. There’s a reserve towards the north end that contains a hall, toilets, picnic area, the Minnie Water SLSC (the beach is patrolled through the summer holidays) and a vehicle beach access track. Besides the 65 kilometre coastal trek that is the Yuraygir coastal walk, this area has a handful of other short walk options that may be easier to convince the kids to do - perhaps try the Angophora or Rocky Point walks out for size!...

Wooli to Red Rock Walk

Riverside Drive, Wooli NSW 2462
Wooli to Red Rock is the most strenuous and remote section of Yuraygir coastal walk. Enjoy the challenge of crossing rocky platforms when the tide’s out and crossing rivers using boat transport. The route can be tackled as a challenging day walk or part of a multi-day trek. Hike long stretches of rocky shoreline interspersed with high-energy pebbly beaches, find the way across a tidal creek and walk along sandy beaches fringed with lush pandanus palms. You can even stop wherever you like and try your hand at fishing. You’ll see protected habitat for the endangered little tern at both the northern and southern ends of Station Creek Beach, near Pebbly Beach campground and Red Rock town. Keep your binoculars handy for spotting these tiny migratory seabirds with distinctive black, white and grey markings. Breeding has been increasingly successful due to management action and visitation control of this part of the national park....

Diggers Headland

43173 - Diggers Camp NSW 2462
Diggers Camp is quite possibly the most hidden gem within the Clarence Valley. A four kilometre drive over unsealed road North of Wooli, Diggers Camp is where you go to truly get away from it all. Largely off grid, with no shops, main streets or even street lights in sight, this is their quiet haven and they think it will be yours too! For the historians amongst you, here's a Fun Fact for your file... Diggers Camp was named as such because a gold mine operated here in the late 1800s – the only coastal gold mine in the Clarence Valley. (They can't promise actual gold anymore but their sunsets are pretty Golden!) The Diggers Headland Reserve Camping Ground caters for approximately 26 sites and is located on Crown Reserve. Camping is available in the Diggers Headland Reserve in December and January and New South Wales or Queensland public school holiday periods and is categorised as primitive so if real camping is for you then this is a must stop!...
Wooli Beach Logo and Images

Wooli Beach

Main Street, Wooli NSW 2462
Wooli is practically an island – a three kilometre long finger of land surrounded by the Pacific on one side and the glorious Wooli Wooli River on the other. And so naturally this is a beach town with saltwater in its veins. Incidentally, this section of coastline forms the northern sector of the Solitary Islands Marine Park which protects the estuaries, beaches and islands (from Sandon River to Coffs Harbour), so the ecosystem here is particularly healthy. The Wooli Beach stretches north to Wilson’s Head and is 4WD accessible. The beach ends abruptly at the break wall that herds the Wooli Wooli River out to sea, and this southern corner is where a lot of the action happens: Fishing off the wall, surfing the beach breaks, 4WD access, Marine Rescue HQ, and fishing boats crossing the bar. With patrols in Summer Wooli Beach is a safe place for the whole family and has beachside amenities galore....
Rocky Point Logo and Images

Rocky Point

Rocky Point, Minnie Water NSW 2462
Rocky Point marks the northern flank of Minnie Water’s amazing stretch of beach. From out on the end of Rocky Point, you can see north to Illaroo and further up to Sandon in the distance. Tempting tracks wind off into the foreshore scrub to take you along the escarpment to Illaroo. Looking south from Rocky Point gives a great view back along the curve towards Minnie Waters main beach. Swimming immediately off or around Rocky Point isn’t advisable, (unless it’s of the rock pool variety) and why would you, when a few hundred metres up the beach you can swim directly in front of the local Surf Life Saving Club. Surfers can find reasonable beach breaks between Rocky Point and the surf club, particularly on a modest easterly swell, on a mid to high tide....

Or wander along Wilsons Headland walking track and you’ll find lots of other great picnic spots and lookouts with sweeping coastal views ideal for whale watching. Despite being closely related to eucalypts, angophoras are actually part of the myrtle family. Tea tree, coastal cypress and coastal banksia are also part of this forest.
