The battle of Eureka is a highly contested historical event that has provoked debate and discussion for more than 150 years.
The youthful colony’s struggle for democracy exploded with the 1854 gold miners' uprising. The heroic stand by young people from many countries was a flashpoint on the path to a new nation.
Eureka has grown to symbolise change.
M.A.D.E will now harness the energy and emotion behind the Eureka story to inspire ways in which individuals can act to improve their world. It will challenge and question, and provoke debate about our future.
The original Eureka Flag – fragile yet powerful – will be displayed in its own darkened gallery, a silent witness to the making of Australian democracy.
