Moorooduc Estate

501 Derril Rd, Moorooduc VIC 3933

Established in 1981 by Richard and Jill McIntyre, Moorooduc Estate is a small, family-run wine business that has developed an enviable reputation for complex and food friendly wines. Moorooduc Estate offers some of the finest of Mornington Peninsula wine and hand-crafted produce available for tasting and purchase at cellar door, as well as casual lunches on Saturday and Sunday. Their philosophy in everything they do is to make the most of top quality ingredients. Intensive, hands-on care in the vineyard, with minimal use of chemicals, produces the best possible fruit for their wines. Wild yeast ferments and minimal intervention winemaking, with a nod to traditional Burgundian techniques, allow their wines to express their site specificity, or terroir. Similarly, they aim to source ingredients that are seasonal, local and organic for the food that they offer in the cellar door, as well as for Jill's special luncheons and food events, promoted solely though their mailing list to their passionate food and wine customers. The wines are regularly praised in the press - most recently the 2008 'The Moorooduc' Chardonnay received 97 points from James Halliday, the top score for the variety, in his 2011 Australian Wine Companion, a guide in which Moorooduc Estate has held five star status for many years. Visit the website, or email them to sign up today! 'This is a serious winery that is certainly worth calling before you make your trip to the peninsula. The McIntyre family are well known in Melbourne wine circles and the wines are reserved, complex and very stylish, just as the McIntyres are in person. A host of Burgundian winemaking techniques result in a silky Pinot Noir and a very fine Chardonnay.' Stuart Gregor.

Mornington Railway

Two Bays Rd, Moorooduc VIC 3933

The Mornington Railway (MR) is an operating railway museum, which recreates various Victorian Railways branch line activities "just as they used to be" for the education and enjoyment of the general public. The MR's longer-term vision is to offer a variety of services representing different methods of branch line operation in use from 1900 until the end of the branch line era in the 1970's. A feature of the MR is that original Victorian Railways heritage equipment and rollingstock is used to support and operate train services. The Mornington railway line is a heritage item in itself, having been opened in 1889. The main operational focus of the MR is the running of steam-hauled passenger trains, but original Victorian Railways diesel-electric locomotives are used on trains occasionally. Consideration is also being given to adding heritage goods vehicles onto regular passenger trains to recreate the era of the "mixed" train. Our trains run on a regular basis between Moorooduc and Mornington, a round distance of approximately 9kilometres. The remaining unrestored 4.5 kilometres section of the line between the main line junction at Baxter and Moorooduc is being restored as time and funds permit. The MR's main centre of activity is Moorooduc station (Melway 105 K9) conveniently located in the centre of the Mornington Peninsula, a popular holiday destination about 60 kilometres from Melbourne The MR is operated by the Mornington Railway Preservation Society (MRPS), a not-for-profit incorporated association, which is staffed by dedicated volunteers.

Stumpy Gully Restaurant

1247 Stumpy Gully Rd, Moorooduc VIC 3933

Stumpy Gully Block Established in 1989, this is the original home block and consists of 26 acres of vines. Stumpy Gully’s iconic Sauvignon Blanc is grown in the cool lower part of the gully. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are planted on west facing slopes protecting the fruit from over exposure, and Marsanne, Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon are grown in the warmer spots.

Crooked Post Block So named for the family’s attempt to erect a line of nice straight posts for the vines when they couldn’t afford contractors to do it for them. This block is famous for its Shiraz, a variety which can be tricky in this region, but it’s been such a hit at Stumpy Gully that one year a group of international visitors purchased the entire vintage.

Black Night Block This 22 acre vineyard lies at the southern end of the original home block and was planted out in 2007 to Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Gris. This young vineyard shows much promise with its plantings of the different clones of Pinot Noir which seem to thrive on this cool site.

Box Stallion Winery Logo and Images

Box Stallion Winery

64 Tubbarubba Rd, Merricks North VIC 3926

Box Stallion Winery, the name is a clue to this winery's original role as a thoroughbred horse stud. 'Operating since 2000, today the handsome stable building with its stallion boxes houses the winery cellar door and a high-quality, but reasonably priced restaurant. An iron stove warms in winter while in summer, tables migrate outdoors where tall hedges, elms, planes and eucalypts frame pastures and wetlands, populated by all manner of water fowl. The good quality wines differ from the Peninsula norm, with eclectic varieties like Arneis, Gewurztraminer and Dolcetto, as well as more conventional fare.' Review by Ralph Kyte-Powell. From the first vintage to the current vintage, many trophies, gold, silver and bronze medals and awards have been proudly gathered, not to mention the always-favourable press. With Box Stallion exporting their wine, America, Canada and China wine drinkers are quietly sharing the pleasures of the diverse range of ultra premium, exclusive wines produced solely from the Box Stallion vineyards by veteran winemaker and industry icon Alex White. Some of Victoria's leading restaurant list their wines and continue to marvel at the reception and quality of the product. The wines can also be found in boutique wine stores. Alex White has a long history of success in the wine industry and he is now focused on producing wines of excellence for Box Stallion. The wines of Box Stallion are new, fun and ambitious. This theme is reflected in the cellar door restaurant, the winner of the 2003 and 2004 Frankston and Mornington Peninsula Small Business Award for Tourism. The cellar door caters for customers looking for a relaxed lunch from a carefully composed menu, in the unique surroundings of the now famous Red Barn. The friendly hospitality includes live music on Sundays from some of the best musicians in the business.

Renowned for highly-rated Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Gamay, a feature of all Eldridge wines is elegance and palate length. Jancis Robinson classified the Pinot as one of six Australian Pinots that have Burgundian style, loving the balance and succulent juicy fruit of the 2006 Pinot. Peter Bourne feels that "Eldridge Estate Pinot Noir is among the region's more subtle and stylish Pinots". Tyson Stelzer on Eldridge Pinot Noir "There is refreshing poise to the cherry blossom and red cherry flavours on parade here. Noted wine writers Sally Gudgeon, Huon Hooke, Rob Geddes and James Halliday have commented that the Eldridge Estate Chardonnay is one of the regions most consistent and best. Ralph Kyte-Powell, writer for Delicious Magazine and The Age has commented that "the Eldridge Gamay should be on everyone's shopping list". At just three hectares, but with some of the oldest vines in the district, the winery is in one of the coolest elevated sub-regions of the Mornington Peninsula. The single-vineyard wines are available from cellar door, online, mailing list and in selected fine restaurants Australia-wide. 'David and Wendy Lloyd, owners of Eldridge Estate, are passionate about wine, and their love of it is infectious. The mature, picturesque valley vineyard provides outstanding Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs, and clonal and technical experimentation ensure a quality focus. Gamay, the succulent grape of France's famous red Beaujolais performs well here, a unique companion to Mornington Peninsula cuisine, especially when the weather warms up. The Lloyds also source Shiraz from a small vineyard at Euroa in Central Victoria to make a big, tasty red of great concentration.' Ralph Kyte-Powell.

'Darling Park's driveway descends a hill to the cellar door, leaving the bustle of the main road well behind. There's a slight, fairy-tale feel in this forest clearing. The cellar door has a pointy tower, undulating mosaic 'landscapes' grace a little children's area outside, and wine labels feature fantasies by leading artists. Further down, a little grassy sward by Dunn's Creek has picnic tables, and a well-tended vineyard climbs back up the hill from the winery. Wine quality is very good, the atmosphere is magical.' The idea for Paradigm Hill was conceived almost 40 years ago. Ruth and George have always been passionate about food and wine and their other careers have laid the foundation for this adventure. Paradigm Hill was a case of all or none and their obsession with the pursuit of quality has meant pushing the boundaries with viticulture and wine making and to work within ecologically responsible practices. Great wine is made in the vineyard and they have just over ten acres of north facing gently sloping vineyard. The trellis runs north south and vines have been trained with a keen eye on ensuring a balanced vine. They are committed to using only estate grown grapes for on site production of pinot noir, shiraz, pinot gris and riesling. This voguish new cellar door and winery at the end of a long driveway boasts a large timber deck with an eye-pleasing view of vineyards, meadows, stands of bush and rolling hills. An excellent spot to savour riesling, shiraz, pinot gris and pinot noir. Tasting plates of savoury delicacies are usually available to complement the wines on the first weekend of each month....

A low dune backs the northern section of Merricks Beach, giving way to 10 to 20 metre high vegetated bluffs in the southern section. This area is home to the endangered Red-Capped Plover. The Merricks Yacht Club is about halfway along the beach and can be accessed from the end of Merricks Beach Road. There are picnic facilities and a toilet block here. There is also access via a small walking track opposite #7 Bluff Road. The beach is fairly protected and receives low wind waves and very rare ocean swell. There is deep water at high tide and exposed sand and reef flats at low tide. You can walk along the beach at low tide to Balnarring Beach in the north-west. There is no access to Point Leo Beach as the beach is divided by East Creek which can flow quite deeply....

The boardwalk follows the creek through to The Briars Park, known for its 1840s homestead, bushland and wetland trails with boardwalks that travel through the wetland, taking in several bird hides and providing very peaceful walks. Keep an eye out for wildlife such as wallabies and native birds. Also of interest to nature lovers is Mount Martha Park which consists of 53 hectares of native bushland and walking trails surrounding the 160 metre peak of Mount Martha, offering panoramic views of the bay and towards Arthurs Seat. Safe swimming beaches with wide sandy stretches exist just north and south of the villages and are lined with rows of much photographed colourful bathing boxes. However, much of the coast around Mount Martha typically consists of rocky cliffs with bushland up above, offering a number of walking tracks and scenic viewing spots.
