The Cascade Brewery is Australia's oldest brewery, located in South Hobart, Tasmania. The brewery is situated in the foothills of Mount Wellington, a five-minute drive from Hobart's central business district. Tench -Tours & Activities, The

One of Australia's most significant convict precincts is only a short walk or Red Decker bus ride from Hobart CBD ('Old Hobart Gaol' stop). The Tench, as it was known by its inhabitants, was the convict prisoners' barracks for Hobart Town. It originally spanned over two acres and some 50,000 male convicts passed through the complex. Following the cessation of convict transportation, the site became Hobart Gaol for more than 100 years. Sections of the chapel were converted into two Supreme Courts connected by tunnels to the gaol. An execution yard and gallows were added. This fascinating history can still be discovered in the buildings that remain - a captivating insight into over 175 years of Hobart's shadier past. Access to the site is by guided tour or events only. These include daytime tours, ghost tours, daily 'No Mercy' strolling theatre production (from the creators of the award-winning 'Louisa's Walk) and there is a weekly short musical production of 'Trial by Jury'. There is also a National Trust gift shop on site. Open every day except Good Friday, Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day (access by guided tour or event only, book online)....

As an island state, the sea is significant to all Tasmanians and the islands boast a strong maritime heritage. The Maritime Museum of Tasmania explores the connections between the people of the islands and the influence of the sea on their lives. Discover the craft and art of centuries of Tasmanian ship building from an example of an aboriginal bark canoe through wooden boats to modern aluminium fast ferries. You can learn how important sailing and steam ships were for developing Tasmanian industries exporting raw materials and products of the islands, such as apples, minerals and timber, as well as the influence of early European explorers and whalers. Navigational instruments show how mariners found their way across the seas while archaeological discoveries from shipwrecks around the Tasmanian islands show how challenging, difficult and dangerous the seafarer's life could be. The Museum can be found in the Carnegie Building, at Sullivan's Cove, a short walk from Hobart's central business district and across the road from Constitution Dock, the historic heart of Maritime Hobart. The Royal Hobart Golf course is a championship 18 hole course east of Hobart in Southern Tasmania. Located at Seven Mile Beach, the course is a 20-minute drive south-east of Hobart (18 km) and a 10-minute drive from the Hobart Airport. This beautifully preserved 19th-century whaling captain's elegant homestead is just an eight-minute drive from the Hobart CBD (on route to MONA). It is owned and operated by the National Trust. Now dedicated to marine conservation, Runnymede has a rich collection of artefacts related to the maritime interests of Captain Charles Bayley, who named the house after his favourite ship. The house was built around 1836 for Robert Pitcairn, one of the first lawyers admitted to the Supreme Court in the Van Diemen's Land colony and a leading campaigner against the transportation of convicts from Britain. It was also home to Bishop Francis Nixon, Tasmania's first Anglican bishop. Access to the house is by guided tour or events only, book online. Stories in Ink: John Scot?s diary 1836-1847, King Island, Tasmania? is a personal response to the manuscript diary of retired sealer, John Scot, which the artist first discovered online via the Tasmanian Archives and Heritage Office. This exhibition is the culmination of two years spent researching recently discovered Scottish and Tasmanian Aboriginal ancestors. The investigation has also opened up connections with living relatives of John Scot and his partner Mary, an Aboriginal woman from Tasmania. Emerging from an ongoing exploration of human presence within the landscape, this series of linocut prints, and oil and charcoal sketches provides a visual narrative of the ebb and flow of life on King Island, and investigates themes of cultural co-existence, hardship, physical isolation, resilience, loneliness, faith and daily routine....

This was the beginning of a fantastic journey for the Lark family and the start of the Tasmanian whisky industry that we know today. Art Mob, in Hobart's Hunter Street arts precinct, is Tasmania's only dedicated Aboriginal art gallery. Hunter Street is located on the waterfront, a five-minute walk from the city. Most of Australia's indigenous communities are represented at Art Mob, including the Western Desert, Balgo Hills, the Kimberley, Torres Strait and Tiwi Islands and Arnhem Land. Work by some of Australia's most collectable artists, including Ronnie Tjampitjinpa from the Western Desert, Dennis Nona from the Torres Strait Islands and Emily Kame Kngwarreye from Utopia, are exhibited and sold at Art Mob. The gallery specialises in Tasmanian Aboriginal art, including rare shell necklaces, paintings, prints and wood and fibre works. Tasmanian artists include Lola Greeno, Mick Quilliam and Julian Oates. Art Mob was established by Tasmanian Euan Hills in 2002 to provide much needed expert knowledge, and to honour and support Tasmanian Aboriginal culture and art. Launceston to Hobart Yacht Race

One of Australia's newest and fastest growing ocean races, the Launceston to Hobart Yacht Race sees yachts journey 280 nautical miles Launceston down to Hobart via the east coast of Tasmania. The race starts on Monday, 27 December and the fleet will set sail from Inspection Head wharf at Beauty Point, a few miles upstream from Low Head. Spectators can see the yachts from the foreshores of the Tamar downstream, while many pleasure craft follow the fleet to Low Head. From there the course will take the yachts through notorious Banks Strait between the north-east tip of Tasmania and the Furneaux Islands before heading to Hobart via the Mercury Passage between Maria Island and the Tasmanian mainland. As they sail down the east coast the L2H boats probably will sail in company with those racing from Sydney and Melbourne to the joint finish of all three races in Hobart....

Runnymede is an elegant colonial homestead situated in New Town, just an eight-minute drive north of Hobart CBD (en route to Mona). It was built around 1836 for Robert Pitcairn, the first lawyer to qualify in the colony and a leading campaigner against the transportation of convicts from Britain. When Captain Charles Bayley bought the house in 1864, he named it Runnymede after his favourite ship. The Bayley family lived in the house for the next 100 years. Now dedicated to marine conservation, the house as a large collection of whaling and maritime items. The historic garden features many historic trees and plants. Cruising down the River Derwent pass historic Battery Point, the iconic Wrest Point Casino and the Shot Tower at Taroona. Then cruise to the 'Iron Pot', Australia's oldest lighthouse. The origins of this lighthouse are steeped in tragedy, with frequent shipwrecks resulting in an outcry from the settlement. The unique square spire is a testament to convict construction, still standing more than 150 years later. Cascades Female Factory Historic Site

The World Heritage-listed Cascades Female Factory is Australia's most significant site associated with female convicts. It is located in South Hobart in the shadow of Mount Wellington, only a short distance from the Hobart waterfront. The Cascades Female Factory was a self-contained, purpose-built institution intended to reform female convicts, where the inmates did laundry and needlework services, offsetting some of the Colony's penal costs. Thousands of women and children were imprisoned here, and many never left. Taking one of the guided tours will really help to bring its history to life. The Heritage Tour is a comprehensive guided tour of the Site, including the Matron's Quarters. It is offered several times daily and lasts approximately 45 minutes. Check with the Site for times. The International Wall of Friendship was conceived as a lasting memorial to the bonds of friendship and goodwill of many nations who have made Tasmania their home and their contribution and committment to the progress and well being of the state. Arriving at the famous Freycinet National park, we give you up to four hours to explore this breathtaking area. Take a walk to the Wineglass Bay lookout and see one of the top ten wilderness beaches in the world, and continue down to the shimmering white sands of Wineglass Bay Beach. Later in the afternoon, we will explore the other sights of the area including Cape Tourville Lighthouse, Richardson's Beach, Honeymoon Bay and hopefully you will even have time to catch up with a friendly wallaby. John Elliott Classics Museum

Argyle Accommodation is a recently renovated guest house with 10 rooms of accommodation located in the centre of Hobart, convenient to the city, the waterfront, Salamanca, the CBD and the MONA ferry terminal. We have 3 double rooms, 4 Queen Rooms, 1 twin room and three King rooms that can be split to accommodate singles travelling together, one has a beautiful outdoor verandah with a mountain view. We also have a roomy 2 bedroom apartment with a split King bed in one bedroom and a Queen in the other to accommodate two couples travelling together or a family. There is also a double fold-out bed so the apartment can accommodated up to 6 people. It has a lounge area with table and four chairs. There is also an enclosed verandah for extra room. The Apartment has a dedicated bathroom in the adjacent wing. Being a former guest house the bathrooms are located in an adjacent wing and have also been fully renovated. The Double rooms all share a bathroom.
