Tench -Tours & Activities, The

Campbell Street, Hobart TAS 7000
One of Australia's most significant convict precincts is only a short walk or Red Decker bus ride from Hobart CBD ('Old Hobart Gaol' stop). The Tench, as it was known by its inhabitants, was the convict prisoners' barracks for Hobart Town. It originally spanned over two acres and some 50,000 male convicts passed through the complex. Following the cessation of convict transportation, the site became Hobart Gaol for more than 100 years. Sections of the chapel were converted into two Supreme Courts connected by tunnels to the gaol. An execution yard and gallows were added. This fascinating history can still be discovered in the buildings that remain - a captivating insight into over 175 years of Hobart's shadier past. Access to the site is by guided tour or events only. These include daytime tours, ghost tours, daily 'No Mercy' strolling theatre production (from the creators of the award-winning 'Louisa's Walk) and there is a weekly short musical production of 'Trial by Jury'. There is also a National Trust gift shop on site. Open every day except Good Friday, Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day (access by guided tour or event only, book online)....

In Australia, Curious Traveller runs expeditions in which volunteers help scientists with valuable field research, such as conducting fauna counts and flora surveys, and assisting with animal trapping and data collection. These trips explore parts of the country to learn about what?s there and contribute to how it might be better conserved. Farm Gate Market

Bathurst Street, Hobart TAS 7000
Every Sunday, come rain hail or shine, a busy street in the heart of Hobart transforms into a bustling farmers' market. It's all about Tasmanian produce and getting to know your farmer, and it always has been. Five years back, our market began with an honest and simple philosophy, that if you couldn't eat it, drink it, grow it or meet the producer, then you wouldn't find it at the market. That ethos has always held true. And now, the little farmers' market that began with 12 stallholders has grown into an essential Sunday ritual for locals, one of the top five farmers' markets in the country as voted by Australian Traveller Magazine and Silver Medal winner at the 2015 Australian Tourism Awards for Excellence In Food Tourism. Tasmania's distinct growing seasons make for an ever-changing array of produce and that's what we celebrate every Sunday. Staying true to what?s in season locally is reflected throughout the market; on fresh produce stalls, in artisan foods and foodie menus. We know our farmers very well and we'd like to share their stories with you. Whenever you're in Hobart, we'd love to... see you on Sunday....

Bill's father-in-law Max produced a wonderful bottle of single malt, and as they enjoyed a drink in the park at Bothwell, surrounded by Georgian buildings, barley fields and the gentle flowing of the Clyde River, Bill remarked to Max, "I wonder why there isn't anyone making malt whisky in Tasmania". This was the beginning of a fantastic journey for the Lark family and the start of the Tasmanian whisky industry that we know today. Lark Distillery now produce many different products as well as their award winning Single Malt Whisky including, Forty Spotted Rare Tasmanian Gin and Slainte Whisky Liqueur....

John Elliott Classics Museum

University Centre, Hobart TAS 7000
A boutique antiquities museum housing examples of the art and culture of the major ancient Mediterranean civilisations. It was established in 1955 by John Elliott, Professor of Classics, to create a teaching and research collection which was also accessible to the public. From Egypt come the assorted amulets, scarabs and ushabti figures found in most ancient Egyptian tombs. A limestone false tomb door, through which the deceased's spirit could pass, is a highlight. Much of the Greek collection comprises pottery which traces stylistic developments in Greek art, from early static, geometric decoration to the fluid, elegant figures of the Classical era. Beautiful yet functional, they speak equally of mythical tales, religious reverence, and wild party nights. Whether it's a centurion's sword, floor mosaics, jewellery and cosmetic items, or bronze surgical implements, the Roman artefacts give many insights into daily life in the Roman world. Once unearthed by archaeologists, they now await discovery by you. The extensive range of Greek and Roman coins, often miniature works of art, reveal much about political realities and ambitions by their use as propaganda tools - proof that political spin and manipulation has a long history....

Greater Hobart

Hobart, Hobart TAS 7000

Close by are the neat vineyards and wineries of the Coal River Valley, home of superb cool-climate wines. The Greater Hobart area has beaches, wineries, breweries, world-class museums, mountains and waterfalls all within a small radius. ...
