The Eucalypt Trail is located 14 kilometres north of Batemans Bay on the eastern side of the Princes Highway, in the Kioloa Rest area. An easy 500 metre loop, the Eucalypt Trail is designed to assist visitors to identify 11 different species of eucalypt trees using common and botanical names, flowers and fruits. The 11 eucalypt species to be found include: the Blackbutt, Sydney Blue Gum, Grey Ironbark, Monkey Gum, Rough Barked Apple, Sydney Peppermint, Red Bloodwood, Woollybutt, White Stringybark, Spotted Gum and Bangalay. The rest area incorporates public amenities, barbecues and picnic tables so visitors can take a short rest stop for lunch, following their fun filled Eucalypt Trail adventure.

Pebbly Beach is already known widely as the home of the "surfing kangaroos" (a myth arising from a photograph of a kangaroo in the low surf - probably chased there by a dog). Although they will not be surfing when you visit, you will find a large resident kangaroo population at Pebbly quite happy to be patted or to pose for a photograph. The Pebbly Beach turn-off is about 10 kilometres south of Termeil and it is about eight kilometres over a gravel road to Pebbly itself. Pebbly Beach is a popular camping area with great surfing beach and bush walks within the park. Banksias, coastal rosemary and lomandra grow on the exposed headlands buffeted by salty sea winds. Look out for sea eagles soaring above, sooty oystercatchers along the shore and dolphins riding the waves out to sea.

Grace Paleg is a well known and prolific artist of 45 years experience who has exhibited regularly and successfully in many major shows and galleries. Grace studied Graphic Design at Swinburne in Victoria and life drawing and portraiture at East Sydney Tech. Studies followed with the late Lesley Sinclair and David Moore at Montsalvat and Allan Martin at his studio in Eltham. Grace's earlier work consists of over 300 commissioned portraits and in the past years she has diversified in subject matter to Life Drawing, Landscape and Still Life. Grace has tutored for 17 years and is an invitation judge and demonstrator for many shows and art societies. Grace continues to teach regularly interstate and at the Grace Paleg Fine Art Studio Gallery in Batemans Bay, New South Wales, where her works featuring pastels, landscapes, portraits and life drawings are displayed. The studio is open by appointment at any time.

Land kayaks here and take a short walk on the unique Cullendulla Nature Reserve boardwalk with interpretive signage about the noteworthy Aboriginal history. The upper end of the creek features the fascinating historic remains of a railway. The first stop on the Batemans Bay Snorkelling Trail is 12 kilometres north of Batemans Bay at Maloneys Beach. As well as being a fantastic spot for snorkelling, Maloneys is ideal for family outings with a grassy reserve, toilets, boat ramp, electric barbecues and covered picnic area. The next destination is Sunshine Cove Beach, five kilometres south of Batemans Bay. This vibrantly coloured beach provides spectacular snorkelling. From rocky reefs to seaweed beds, there is plenty to see. While snorkelling, you are also likely to encounter endemic fish such as red morwong, luderick and bream as well as lobsters, gropers and abalone. Lastly, head eight kilometres south to the ancient Guerilla Bay. Snorkel through the beautiful blue waters and explore some of the oldest, most picturesque rocks on Eurobodalla's coastline. To finish the day enjoy a picnic or even take a walk to Burrewurra Point to see the WWII bunker.

Snorkelling Guerilla Bay

How to get there: Take the Guerilla Bay turn off from George Bass Drive onto Burri Point Road, then left onto Beach Parade and near its end turn right to the carpark. The water at Guerilla Bay is clear and inviting and provides different experiences for different levels of snorkellers. A prominent small rocky island is a feature of the bay and divides the safer more comfortable snorkelling waters to the south of the gravel spit and the more adventurous and dangerous waters to the north of the spit. On this northern side is the pot. Depending on the tide this can be difficult to access as some jagged rocks need to be negotiated to get to the water - but for more experienced snorkellers, in the right conditions, it is worth the effort. The sheltered bay on the southern side is rocky with a flat reef extending up in walls on a roughly 35 degree angle and sheer walls that stretch up to ten metres. The seaweed-covered rocks and the crevices between them offer shelter to a wide variety of fish species such as blue groper, wrasse, luderick and more....

Leading to the entrance of Cullendulla Creek, this terrific short walk touches swamp oak and spotted gum forest before revealing a peaceful beach and rest spot in sight of Cullendulla Beach and the Batemans Bay township. Expect a moderate-to-steep gradient, but it’s worth it. Pack a picnic lunch and bring the kids along, or bring a birding guide and watch white ibises and black swans drift across the creek. In the warmer months, this is an ideal place for a swim, too; the small estuary beach is protected from onshore winds by Square Head, and the bay, though unpatrolled, is calm enough for swimming. If you fancy a round of fishing, turn left at the carpark and follow the other Square Head track instead....

Pebbly Beach picnic area is tucked into the forest behind the beach and is famous for its abundant population of eastern grey kangaroos. It’s a great spot to stop for a swim or for the aspiring fisherman to throw a line. You can enjoy a picnic lunch at one of the shelters and there’s plenty of grass if you’d like to lay out a picnic rug. If you manage to catch a fish or two you’ll be able to cook them up on the barbecues; if not, you can pick up some fresh seafood from East Lynne on the way to Pebbly Beach. During low tide there are a couple of beautiful coastal walks you can explore - either wander along the rock platforms or head south along the sand towards Depot Beach. If you’re feeling more adventurous you can take the track to Durras Mountain....

At low tide, Australian white ibises forage in the sand here, while large groups of solider crabs march back and forth. The track also passes swamp oak forest, an endangered ecological community. Bring some binoculars and take advantage of the bench seats along the way for a round of birdwatching. Signs along the walk help you get the most out of any visit, highlighting features like the unusual dune formations called ‘cheniers.’ These scenic ridges contain a staggering 7,000 years of shoreline changes stored in their sand....

An enjoyable 17 kilometre sea paddle along a quiet coastline of small beaches and rugged headlands in Murramarang National Park. As you come past Wasp Island you will pick up the open sea conditions. The geology here is fantastic - you're at the south end of the Sydney Sandstone Basin dating back to between 200 and 300 million years. That's 200 million years younger than the Wagonga formation which you will see emerging as you pass Dark Beach. As you round the headland north of Richmond Beach take a minute to appreciate the magnificent upward arching fold in the cliff face. Most beaches face south east and have powerful dumping surfs if a southerly swell is up. Safer landings can be found once you enter Batemans Bay. Richmond Beach is the easiest for landing on route. Launch at the boat ramp at Cookies Beach off Banyandah Street, South Durras. For a shorter option, finish at Maloneys Beach. Barbecue picnic area and toilets are at Cookies Beach....

Burrawang Walking Track

A delightful walk that is bound to enliven the senses with scenic vistas, birdwatching and wildlife. Burrawang walking track winds through the largest preserved stand of spotted gums in coastal NSW. Starting near Depot Beach campground, this moderate track leads across Depot Beach Headland in Murramarang National Park, north of Batemans Bay. Stop to admire the towering spotted gums with their pale mottled trunks, a stark contrast to the dark green understory of burrawangs. Listen for the ‘woop woop’ of the wonga pigeon echoing through the trees. You might even glimpse a lyrebird foraging for insects among the forest litter or startle a swamp wallaby darting through the bush. Arriving at North Durras beach, be sure to take in the wild beauty and windswept views, and perhaps a spot of fishing. Next to Batemans Bay , Cullendulla Creek Nature Reserve offers scenic views of the surrounding area and islands, as well as picnic spots, birdwatching, and easy walks. Batemans Bay is beautiful, but it also has a hidden trump card up its sleeve; Cullendulla Creek Nature Reserve. Sugar gliders slip between the trees, echidnas forage in the undergrowth, oystercatchers and soldier crabs stalk across the sand, and black swans frolic in the bay. Visitors will find the activities just as rich as the wildlife, with plenty to keep you returning. Pack a picnic, grab a towel, and head to the secluded beach, or pull on your walking shoes for a short hike to a scenic lookout, with Snapper Island and the Tollgates in clear sight. There’s canoeing and kayaking too, and even fishing in certain areas. Pack some binoculars for some stellar birdwatching: the southern emu wren is here all year round, but it’s joined by local and migratory birds from everywhere. And budding geologists will be fascinated by the two ‘chenier’ dune formations – the only examples south of North Queensland....

Burrewarra Point lookout offers spectacular views up and down the coast. The lookout is a charming 10 minute walk from the carpark on Burri Point Road. There are a number of small tracks that branch off at the end of the headland, each boasting an exhilarating view of the Guerilla Bay coastline and beyond. Pebbly Beach to Snake Bay walking track is in the central precinct of Murramarang National Park. To get there: Turn off the Princess Highway at East Lynne, via Mount Agony Road. Drive for approximately eight kilometres and follow the signs to Pebbly Beach....

South Durras

Perfectly positioned between a sparkling lake, ocean beaches and rich forests, South Durras is a little paradise. The national park is stunning to explore, and makes South Durras the perfect place for an escape into a natural landscape. There are very few areas on Australia’s east coast where oceanside forests still stand. Here, beautiful spotted gums run right down to the sea and offer the chance to walk the landscape as it has stood for millennia. The park includes secluded beaches, headlands and forests in all directions. Those to the south are most easily accessed. One of the highlights is Wasp Head, with an excellent walk providing ocean views, golden beaches, hidden bays and ancient cliffs. The beautifully weathered sandstone here marks the edge of the 280-million-year-old Sydney Basin. The Eurobodalla coastline is a world-class geological gallery with amazing formations and folds of sandstone, siltstone, shale, granite, basalt and fossils dating back as far as 510 million years. The deep rockpools at North Head represent millions of years of wave erosion. Accessible via a beach walk from the North Head camping ground, the pools offer snorkelling in clean clear water full of colour and life. Away from the ocean beaches, Durras Lake provides calm flat waters perfect for swimming, fishing, kayaking and paddle boarding. Regarded as one of the purest estuaries on the east coast, Durras Lake is protected by an untouched forest catchment. Fishing for table fish such as bream, whiting and flathead is as simple as casting from the shore. The lake is ideal for kayaks and small boats....
