Port Elliot Maritime Heritage Trail

Freeman Lookout, Horseshoe Bay, Port Elliot SA 5212

The Port Elliot Maritime Heritage Trail is a self-guided walk that highlights Port Elliot's role as the first seaport for the River Murray trade. Development of the river as a significant inland transport route involved by-passing the hazardous Murray Mouth and constructing a rail link (the first public railway in Australia) between Port Elliot on the coast and the Port of Goolwa on the Murray. From 1851 to 1866 more than 500 vessels used the areas facilities as a seaport. Unfortunately the wrecking of seven vessels, between 1853 to 1864, confirmed Horseshoe Bay's growing reputation as a 'ship-trap', resulting in nearby Victor Harbor replacing Port Elliot as the coastal outlet for the River Murray trade. Four of the vessels wrecked within the bay ('Harry', 'Josephine Loizeau', 'Lapwing' and 'Flying Fish') are often exposed within the surf zone at Horseshoe Bay and continue to interest many visitors on the beach. Mystery surrounds the exact location of the remaining shipwrecks; the 'Emu', 'Commodore' and 'Athol' sites which are thought to lie outside Horseshoe Bay are yet to be located. For more information on the trail a brochure is available and five interpretive signs have been placed on the foreshore of Horseshoe Bay.

Port Elliot

43418 - Port Elliot SA 5212
One of the sweetest beach settings in South Australia, Port Elliot is a popular place to visit. Port Elliot is a model seaside village, it has cafes, antique and gift shops along The Strand. Feel the sand between your toes at picturesque Horseshoe Bay - its large beach and safe swimming conditions which makes it a hit with the children. If you like surfing, Boomer Beach is the place to go, it lies on the western edge of the town. Jump aboard the Cockle Train to nearby Goolwa or Victor Harbor - other popular seaside destinations - or try the cliff-top walking path for stunning views of the coast. The Encounter Bikeway weaves its way through Port Elliot's streets. Port Elliot has a wealth of holiday accommodation to relax in. You'll find some great places and you may even want to bring your four-legged friend! Port Elliot was selected by Governor Sir Henry Edward Fox Young in 1850 as the site for the ocean port of the Murray River trade. He named the place after his friend, Sir Charles Elliot. The township was proclaimed in 1854, the same year in which the first railway line in South Australia was opened between Goolwa and Port Elliot. The Governor's choice was unfortunate because the bay was not well enough protected. After several shipwrecks, the anchorage was transferred to the lee of Granite Island at Victor Harbor in 1864....

Port Elliot Maritime Heritage Trail

Freeman Lookout, Port Elliot SA 5212
View the spectacular coast as you walk this easy self-guided trail. See Australia's first public railway and read the interpretive signs along one of our most beautiful beaches. You might see dolphins, whales and seals. Catch the Cockle Train from the station to go to Goolwa or Victor Harbor. Early colonists wanted to bring goods from inland Australia down the River Murray in paddle steamers to the sea. But the river mouth was shallow and dangerous for ships. So a railway was built from the river port at Goolwa to Port Elliot. Ships could then take the goods out from Horseshoe Bay. More than 500 ships used the port from 1851. Sadly, the bay was a ship trap in strong winds. Seven vessels were wrecked. Four of the wrecks are often exposed in the surf zone. These are the Harry, Josephine Loizeau, Lapwing and the Flying Fish. The Flying Fish Cafe on the beach front is a reminder. The other three wrecks cannot be located. These are the Emu, Commodore and the Athol. The rail line was extended to Victor Harbor and trains run for visitors. The Port Elliot station includes a small museum....
