Queanbeyan Printing Museum

The Queanbeyan Printing Museum is one of only a handful nationwide and is fully operational, offering a range of restored machines from the 1870s through to 1960s when letterpress printing in Queanbeyan was superseded by electronics and computerised typesetting. The museum has 12 main sections from hand-set type, through hot-metal production, including a model 14 Lintotype, to a variety of printing presses such as Wharfedale hand-fed press, various platens, proof presses and a Meihle automatic commercial printing press. A complete photographic darkroom is also featured. All machines have been restored to operational mode. A number of machines came from the "Queanbeyan Age" newspaper. The Age was established in 1860 and is still being produced today. The static displays include tools of trade and memorabilia of a bygone age of the printing profession with photographs and reproductions of The Age front pages on display.

Googong Foreshores

Googong Foreshores is located 10 kilometres south of Queanbeyan and the London Bridge area is a further16 kilometres south towards Burra. The dam wall is 62 metres high and the spillway can be viewed from a car park at the northern end. It is the water catchment area for Canberra and Queanbeyan, a recreation area for public use and a wildlife refuge. London Bridge Arch is an interesting limestone formation, formed when water flowing along Burra Creek leaked through cracks in the limestone. These cracks were enlarged as the limestone was dissolved and worn away, forming caves and eventually the London Bridge Arch. The Googong Foreshore area is ideal for sightseeing, fishing, bushwalking, picnicking, canoeing and sailing. Swimming is restricted to downstream of the weir wall only near the picnic areas and camping is not permitted.

Housed in a beautifully preserved 1876 building, the Queanbeyan Museum houses an interesting collection of memorabilia from the area. The Museum has themed displays including: Queanbeyan's Story Begins - the Ngambri people, early exploration and settlers; From Settlement to Town - the railway, telephones, shopkeepers, plumbers, builders, barbers, schooling and courthouses; Bushrangers, Villains and Larrikins - local bushranging from the convict and gold rush eras; The Old Blacksmith's Shop - as it was in the 1900s; That's Entertainment - featuring cameras, radios, fiddles and accordians; Phonographs and Photographs - spotlight on businessman and entrepreneur Theo Cooper; Queanbeyan Medical Practices - featuring an original Both iron lung; Historical Mural by acclaimed artist Margaret Hadfield and much, much more. Free parking behind the Printing Museum next door during opening hours.

The venue for the Queanbeyan Art Society is a charming 1880s brick cottage called O'Neil's Cottage, which is set on the banks of the Queanbeyan River. The Society is a non-profit organisation which holds art exhibitions, competitions and classes. It is a working gallery and has monthly exhibitions each year. Some of these are Open competitions and the remainder are for Members only. Art classes are held on weekdays, weekends and evenings. They cover all mediums and some specialise in a particular subject matter. A relaxed and supportive environment is encouraged and students of all levels are welcome. Tuition costs are minimal. In addition to the regular art classes, visiting professional tutors conduct workshops throughout the year.

Booroomba Rocks in Namadgi National Park offers stunning views of Canberra and across the Brindabella Ranges. Wander through tall forests and take the walking track up a short steep incline to experience panoramic vistas from the top of massive granite cliffs. The shortest walk is just 2.5 kilometres return from the Booroomba Rocks car park. If you?re feeling adventurous, take the 10.5 kilometre return trip from the Honeysuckle Campground. You'll need to search for Australian Alps Walking Trail head closest to the campground, but this walk in the Australian bush is also well worth the effort. Visit the Namadgi National Park Visitors Centre for the latest track conditions, weather updates, local information and detailed maps before embarking on any bush walk. Hot and cold drinks and snacks also available.

Gibraltar Peak

Tidbinbilla Reserve Road, Paddys River ACT 2620

Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve offers outstanding wildlife and natural experiences. The 8.2 kilometre Gibraltar Peak walking trail is well worth the effort; affording magnificent views from the top. The most direct route to Gibraltar Peak starts from Dalsetta, passing through open grassland before the climb to Eliza Saddle. From here, the trail traverses for a short distance featuring some fantastic views. After a steep climb, the imposing Gibraltar Peak is reached. Return via the same route or take the longer route via Eliza Saddle, Birrigai Time Trail, the Visiro Centre and Congwarra Trail. This walk is rated moderate to hard and will take approximately three to four hours return. Call in at the Tidbinbilla Visitors Centre to check on latest conditions and departure points before embarking on any walk in the National Park. Plan ahead for your walk, don?t rely on a mobile phone and avoid walking alone. Tidbinbilla is part of the Australian Alps national parks, a series of parks and reserves that span Australia's south-eastern high country. The Australian Alps are National Heritage listed, recognising that its natural and cultural values are of outstanding national significance.

The Queanbeyan Printing Museum is one of only a handful nationwide and is fully operational, offering a range of restored machines from the 1870s through to 1960s when letterpress printing in Queanbeyan was superseded by electronics and computerized typesetting. The museum has 12 main sections from hand-set type, through hot-metal production, including a model 14 Lintotype, to a variety of printing presses such as Wharfedale hand-fed press, various platens, proof presses and a Meihle automatic commercial printing press. A complete photographic darkroom is also featured. All machines have been restored to operational mode. A number of machines came from the "Queanbeyan Age" newspaper. The Age was established in 1860 and is still being produced today.
