Eagle's View Walk Trail is a 15 kilometre moderate loop walk around John Forrest National Park, Western Australia's oldest national park, with impressive views across the Swan Coastal Plain to distant Perth the track passes through varied vegetation types, including heath lands, open wandoo woodlands and mixed jarrah-marri-wandoo forest. This Top Trail takes walkers away from the picnic areas, initially following Jane Brook down the valley. It then climbs up the valley wall to great views of the city and ocean. The trail then weaves its way up and down valleys, creek lines and hills before heading back to the brook. There are different ecosystems along the way and spring wildflowers are spectacular. Hovea Falls is a pretty place for a picnic lunch when water is flowing. The trail follows Jane Brook back to the main visitor's area. Signs every two kilometres advise how far you have walked and how far to go. The trail can be tackled clockwise or anticlockwise. The walk trail brochure is available from the ranger's office, along with the walker's log book. Walkers must register before they head off and on their return.

If you like to hear and see history unfold before your eyes and are interested in Western Australia's rail heritage, plan a visit to the Interpretive Centre at the former Midland Railway Workshops. The Midland Railway Workshops Interpretive Centre, which is a Western Australian heritage icon and is a partnership between the Midland Redevelopment Authority and Rail Heritage WA. The Interpretive Centre is the former Time Keeper's Office at the entrance to the Workshops site. The Centre is dedicated to all who worked there from 1904 to 1994 and their families. The weatherboard building retains its 1920s ambience while high-tech audio-visual equipment brings back the voices of the workers to the site. The Centre gives visitors vivid insights into a former industrial workplace with a fascinating social history. Large panels give a cameo into Workshops activities, and a DVD and interactive touch screen allow you to find out more.

John Forrest National Park is one of Australia's oldest conservation areas and Western Australia's first national park. Located in the Darling Ranges about half an hour's drive from Perth, the park offers excellent bush walking, mountain biking, scenic drives and rock pools ideal for swimming. Western Australia's colonial pioneers recognised the park's environmental value, declaring it a reserve in 1898. Go walking along one of the trails through rugged wilderness, or along a disused railway line to quiet pools and spectacular waterfalls. You'll also be rewarded with magnificent views over the city and metropolitan area. Popular Rocky Pool picnic area is set among attractive wandoo and paperbark woodland. Here, after winter rains, you can sit and watch the waters of Jane Brook tumble down a series of small rapids into the pool. There's plenty of wildlife to observe including many native birds, possums and bandicoots. In spring time, wildflowers colour the landscape. There are great picnic facilities, extensive walk trails, and limited camping facilities. Tearooms and a tavern are open regularly. The park covers more than 1,500 hectares of land and is best accessed from Great Eastern Highway.

The award winning Swan Valley Heritage Cycle Trail is a 10 kilometre end to end, scenic cycle trail located in the heart of the Swan Valley, 25 minutes drive from the city of Perth, Western Australia. This easy Top Trail includes a series of sings that interpret the rich history, interesting characters and natural elements that allow you to appreciate the unique Swan Valley. Whilst you can start anywhere along trail, there are three main entry points, Guildford (at the Swan Valley and Visitor Centre), Maali Footbridge and West Swan Hall. The trail occasionally leaves West Swan Road (the main route) for quieter streets, to capture the many beautiful vistas of the Swan Valley. The trail passes many interesting places including fruit stalls, picnic spots, galleries, wineries and restaurants to name a few, so you will find many opportunities to stop, relax and enjoy an abundance of experiences. Often on a shared-use path, this trail takes a half day or less to complete and is suitable for riders of all ages and fitness levels. Bicycles can be hired in Perth city and transported by train to the start of the cycle in Guildford. Maps available form the Visitor Centre.

So put on some stout walking shoes and explore the beginning of colonial charm. Explore the history of our town on foot. Established on what's virtually an island encircled by the Swan and Helena Rivers, Guildford's ideally suited to explore on foot. To assist you in discovering the numerous fascinating historic buildings, lively characters and wonderful stores of this 'island village' three new heritage walk trails, with 35 interpretive panels, have been built. The Town Walk: 1,800 metres, 40-60 minutes, red markers The River Ramble: 1,500 metres, 30-50 minutes, blue markers The Stirling Square Circuit: 450 metres, 20 minutes, black markers Each trail starts and finishes at the Old Guildford Courthouse (Visitor Centre). The route markers carry the original Town of Guildford crest, with the trails distinguished by different colour marker plates.

Lesmurdie Falls located in the Lesmurdie Falls National Park in the hills east of Perth, are one of the more spectacular waterfalls on the Darling Range escarpment. Commencing at the top, this moderate two kilometre walk circuit meanders down to the base of the falls, up close to the lush vegetation, and is quite unique for the Perth area. This Top Trail starts on the top of the falls where Lesmurdie book tumbles over the Darling Range Escarpment. Walking down the hill, it follows the brook until it reaches a bridge at the top of the falls. Stand at the top and look over the fall of water. The trail continues down to the picnic area at the base of the hills. From here there is a trail that leads to the base of the falls. This is more like a waterfall in New Zealand than in Perth. The lush vegetation grows where the bubbling brook hits the base of the waterfall. The climb up the hill to return to the car park is steep but short. Enjoy morning tea or lunch in the near by Kalamunda Village.

Stirling Square is a picturesque park that is one point of interest on a self-guided walk through historic Guildford. Stirling Square, originally called Church Square, was set aside and surveyed in 1829. It was originally twice its current size but in the 1940s and 1860s sections were sold off and trees were planted in 1874 and 1897. In the centre of Stirling Square is St Mathew's Church. This is the third St Mathews Church in the area. The first, built of mud bricks in 1836 was replaced by a wooden building which was blown down by a hurricane in 1860. The current building was constructed in 1873 and is notable for the way the bricks have been laid alternately lengthwise and pointing inwards to reinforce the structure.

Set off on a bushwalking adventure through Kalamunda National Park in the Perth Hills. This is where the famous Bibbulmun Track starts – and then winds 1,000 kilometres south to Albany. The Bibbulmun Track is rated as one of Australia’s best hiking trails. Walking trails in Kalamunda National Park take you along Peisse Brook and though forests timbered with marri, wandoo and jarrah. Granite boulder outcrops are common, making the scenery particularly striking. If you’re lucky you might see a kangaroo, echidna or bandicoot, while native birdlife thrives, making Kalamunda National Park a good place for bird watching. The park is a short walk from the centre of Kalamunda Township, which is popular for its village atmosphere and monthly farmer’s markets. Kalamunda National Park is located within the Darling Range, about a half an hour drive from Perth.

Guildford Post Office is one of the town’s most prominent landmarks and still operates today as a postal agency. Built in 1897, the magnificent historic building takes pride of place on the main street of this well preserved town. Examine the Victorian Italianate architectural style, and see if you can spot where alterations were carried out in 1901. The beautiful clock and bell tower were added to the Post Office four years after the building was completed. Whilst the bell still remains in the tower, it is no longer rung. The post office sits on the site of an old convict depot hospital in the heart of the charming town of Guildford, just 20 minutes drive east of Perth. The entire town has been classified by the National Trust and as a result offers many historical buildings worth exploring.
