Surrounded by extensive fringing reefs, the five islands of Frankland Group National Park feature rocky outcrops, dense rainforest, mangroves and coastal vegetation, making them a haven for wildlife. A colony of spectacled flying-foxes roosts on Russell Island, while manta rays and sea turtles have been spotted in nearby waters, part of the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area. Visit the islands in your private vessel from Mulgrave or Russell River boat ramps or go with a commercial tour operator and enjoy a guided nature trail on Normanby Island. Comb the shores at low tide to see intriguing ocean treasures washed up by the sea. Snorkel or dive and enjoy the underwater wonders of the Great Barrier Reef. Camp on Russell Island to truly experience this peaceful island and reef.

Eubenangee Swamp, an important wetland in the coastal lowlands between Ingham and Cairns, is a birdwatchers' paradise. Over 190 species of birds have been recorded here. Sitting below the Bellenden Ker Range (the wettest part of Australia), much of this park is flooded during the wet season. As well as being a significant habitat for waterbirds, and crocodiles, the park also protects some of the last remnants of various lowland vegetation types. Stroll along the 1.5 kilometre return walking track that follows the Alice River, through rainforest to the top of a grassy hill and enjoy views of Bartle Frere and Bellenden Ker, Queensland's two highest peaks, as well as the swamp and its many waterbirds. The small blue timber building on the corner of Bruce Highway and Monro Street clearly indicates that this community is serious about tourism. This is the official tourist information centre and its location is designed to catch your attention when you enter town. Many years ago this building was the local police station and was used to dispense local law enforcement. Now it dispenses helpful information on the town and region's many attractions. This includes the Babinda Boulders, 7 kilometres west of Babinda. Unfortunately they can be very dangerous after heavy rain because the waters become a deadly narrow shute downstream at Devil's Falls. Closer in, the town itself has many examples of early Queensland architecture in the main street, including the Babinda State Hotel and Post Office. A neat and tidy town, the median strip contains colourful flowerbeds. Babinda is also known as 'The Umbrella Town' because of the rainfall it receives each year and it proudly displays a sign that acknowledges Babinda winning the 'Friendliest Town' category in the 2001 Tidy Towns Competition. The Babinda Boulders is a popular tourist attraction and swimming hole surrounded by lush vibrant rainforest. The area is made up of fast flowing creeks that weave through huge granite boulders and is it any wonder how this gorgeous, tranquil destination received its name. The sparkling, cascading streams creates large pools of cool and refreshing mountain water, providing the perfect area for an afternoon swim. The Boulders is one hour south of Cairns, travelling along the Bruce Highway, turn right into the town of Babinda. Road signs then direct the way to the swimming hole, which is seven kilometres west of Babinda. During the drive between Cairns and Babinda, you’ll pass through spectacular mountainous scenery as well as sugar and banana farming communities....
