Fowles Wine is an awarding winning cool climate wine producer in the ruggedly beautiful region of the Strathbogie Ranges, central Victoria.

Fowles Wine Cellar Door and Cafe is located at the foothills of the stunning Strathbogie Ranges, just 1.5 hours north of Melbourne.

For a relatively young winery, in the context of Australia's 200 year wine heritage, Fowles Wine has been grabbing attention with its winemaking prowess and wonderful hospitality. Named as a 'Winery to Watch' by Wine Spectator Magazine, a Five Star winery by James Halliday and Victoria's Best Tourism Winery (three years in a row), Fowles Wine crafts elegant cool climate wines that can be enjoyed alongside freshly prepared modern European dishes featuring the finest local produce.

Fowles Wine is renowned for making wine to match with food. In fact, what really sets them apart is their Ladies who Shoot their Lunch and Are you Game? wines - the world's first blended specifically to match with wild game meat.

These wines are inspired by Chief Executive Matt Fowles' love of 'real food' - wild meat and home grown vegetables from the Strathbogie Ranges. A responsible hunter and avid food and wine man, Matt wanted to create wines that would match the texture and intensity of wild game (which is quite different from commercially reared meat). While slightly eccentric, the philosophy that underpins Ladies who Shoot their Lunch and Are you Game? is genuine and honest and the wines themselves modern and exciting.    

In fact, the Cellar Door Cafe team have created a specialised food and wine flight called 'The Gamekeepers Platter' that features four tastes of game matched with their food wines to provide insights into their wild philosophy.

Fowles Wine also produces Stone Dwellers, a wine range that showcases the best varietal examples from the Strathbogie Ranges. All of their wines can be enjoyed in the welcoming and friendly atmosphere of the Cellar Door Cafe. Listed in The Age Good Food Guide for the fifth year in a row, Head Chef Adele Aiken presents the best local produce in freshly prepared and wonderfully presented dishes.

A bit more about our region:

The Strathbogie Ranges are located about 100 kilometres north of Melbourne. High altitude and ruggedly beautiful, the ranges are characterised by ancient granite boulders - statues of a turbulent geological history that goes back 360 million years. Today, the nutrient poor granitic soils and cool continental climate are ideal for producing intense wines that are full of character and elegance. At elevations of up to 600m, the Strathbogie Ranges is one of Australia's highest wine regions and offers stunning views across the central Victorian plains.

"Everything at Tahbilk Winery reflects a passion for history and heritage. The winery buildings are classified by the National Trust and the old Shiraz vines planted in 1860 should be declared national treasures. The place is quite simply a shrine for Australian wine lovers and is a must visit for any wine enthusiasts visiting Victoria. As an added bonus the wines are also good. The Marsanne is a perennial favourite and all of the reds are unmistakably traditional, cellar worthy and great value..

Hughes Creek was named after the first settler in Avenel, for many years it was a popular overnight stop for drovers. The bridge was built in 1859 by contractor Hugh Dalrymple for the Board of Lands and Works in Victoria. The Historic Hughes Creek Bridge is perhaps better known for its association to Ned Kelly. At the age of 11, Ned rescued Richard Shelton who had fallen into the creek after trying to cross over on a tree bridge. The incident occurred only 150 metres downstream from the Bridge. A green silk cummerbund was awarded to Ned for his bravery by Richard's parents. Ned was wearing the cummerbund when he was captured at the Siege of Glenrowan....

Steeped in history, visit the many graves scattered around the Avenel Cemetery. Of important note here is the grave of John 'Red' Kelly, the father of the infamous Ned Kelly. 'Red' was laid to rest at the age of 45 on the 28 December 1866. He died in the Kilmore Gaol after his health was ruined due to alcohol abuse. ...
