Laboite Theatre Company

Lvl 5, 6 - 8 Musk Avenue, Kelvin Grove QLD 4059

La Boite Theatre Company is a leading Australian theatre company working out of the nation’s third largest city. It is a platform for inspired collaboration, seeking to produce and present theatre that draws on the full grammar of performance. Words, music, dance, the visual arts and contemporary performance are among the contributors to a theatre that aims to invigorate minds and emotions. We produce plays, but also create work that privileges other forms of theatrical expression. Stories can be told in many ways, and our work is driven by a desire for fresh enunciations.

We occupy Australia’s only purpose-built theatre-in-the-round, one of only a handful in the world, and embrace its distinctive possibilities. This is an epic-intimate space that calls for a theatre that celebrates the theatrical. It is an arena of inquiry and a coliseum of the senses.

We mostly create our own productions, but also seek collaborations with independent creative teams and both new and established companies from Queensland and beyond. We also present touring work. We have an appetite for new work, from both Australian and international artists, but also a taste for renovating the classic works of world drama by building surprising alliances and approaches. We aim to converse with the times - to unwrap the past and scrutinise the present as a means of expressing our aspirations for the future.

Harvest Rain is well-known for producing high quality, affordable productions that are enjoyed by thousands of theatre goers each year. At Harvest Rain, we believe that live theatre is not just for the rich or for the arty-farty – theatre is for everyone, and we are committed to presenting live entertainment that is fun, engaging, and affordable for the whole family to enjoy!

Toowong Memorial Park

65 Sylvan Road, Toowong QLD 4066

Toowong Memorial Park, home to Western Districts Rugby Football Club, can be packed with spectators in season, unaware of historic tributes just metres from the footy oval, towards Brisbane River. Parliamentarian EM Macartney officially opened Toowong Memorial Park on 7 September 1918 in honour of the 101 locals who enlisted in WWI. Decorative wrought iron memorial gates were erected to mark the park's official opening. Beyond, on the summit of a ridge, is the 12 metre high Toowong Soldiers' Memorial, unveiled by Governor Sir Matthew Nathan on 2 July 1922. A fluted column with a Queensland marble drinking fountain at its base, surrounded by carved wreaths and swags, this memorial's base provides a valuable roll call of local involvement, naming all who enlisted on three marble slabs. A commemorative avenue of palms was planted in 1918. A large section was relocated in 1993 to run parallel to Sylvan Road from the car park, curving gently towards the memorial gates. Dawn ANZAC Day services proceed along this avenue, gathering at a more recent RSL memorial cairn, inside the gates.

Ithaca War Memorial and Park Logo and Images

Ithaca War Memorial and Park

Enoggera Terrace, Paddington QLD 4064

Brisbane's only war memorial clock silently keeps time and memories, hidden from traffic passing below on the busy Latrobe Terrace at inner-suburban Paddington. The four-sided clock, mounted atop a stone memorial engraved with the names of 130 local men who died in active service during WWI, was unveiled by Governor Sir Matthew Nathan in February 1922. Residents of what was Ithaca Town Council began fundraising in 1920 and commissioned monumental masonry firm AH Thurlow under supervision of Ithaca town engineer R Black to create their memorial. Synchronome Electric Company manufactured the clock, initially driven by a master clock in the adjacent fire station. Sited on a bare hilltop known as Cooks Hill, sandwiched between Enoggera and Latrobe terraces, the clock dominated the landscape. The bareness was softened by plantings, designed by Ithaca Town Council gardener Alexander Jolly (the father of the future Brisbane mayor William Jolly). The park in which the memorial stands was renamed Alexander Jolly Park in the gardener's memory.

Jan Power's Farmers Markets Mitchelton

Blackwood Street, Mitchelton QLD 4053
Almost 30 years ago an idea was born that was to change Brisbane. Foodie, commentator and city doyenne Jan Power decided to forge the first Farmers Markets, putting pay to her passion for fresh produce, and her commitment supporting farmers and their livelihoods. The first Jan Powers Farmers Markets came to colourful and loud life at the Brisbane Powerhouse site; and today, almost a full generation later, Brisbane is a city indelibly inked with love for Farmers Markets. Jan singularly pushed City regulations again and again to sow the seed of Farmers Markets, and educate Brisbane of the provenance of their food. Now, there is a Jan Powers Farmers Markets every single Saturday somewhere in Brisbane, a market on Sundays in Mitchelton, and a weekly City Markets in Reddacliff Place that attracts some 5,000 city workers and residents!...
