 The Rocks Discovery Museum is a free, family-friendly museum, which tells the story of The Rocks area of Sydney from pre-European days to the present. Housed in a restored 1850s sandstone warehouse, it’s home to a unique collection of images and archaeological artifacts found in The Rocks. Houses and their owners have a tendency to be reflections of one another. Vaucluse House presents venerable Gothic Revival façades to Sydney Harbour but the mansion, built in fits and starts between 1805 and the early 1860s, is in a mixture of styles, is unresolved in terms of its layout and lacks the social grace of a formal entrance.

Its builder, William Charles Wentworth (1790-1872) is known today as one of our early colonial statesmen. His sense of his place in societywas undermined by illegitimacy and convict associations. With the rising tide of Victorian morality his wife Sarah was shunned as lacking respectability and the family had to socialise outside of colonial society. Vaucluse House’s lack of cohesion is perhaps a result of Wentworth’s brooding anger at this slight and the house’s slow growth over decades. In contrast with the house, the grounds preserve a remarkably complete 19th century estate plan with stables, rural outbuildings, carriage drives, paddocks, lawns, a serene pleasure garden and recreated Victorian kitchen garden.

Since 1997, The Old Fitzroy Hotel has been home to one of Sydney’s first independent live theatre companies: The Tamarama Rock Surfers. Started by a group of actors looking to establish a venue for new and underground productions, the Rock Surfers have played an essential role in the development of the city’s independent theatre reputation. To date it has catered for over 88,000 punters and housed more than 133 shows, including the premieres of over 53 new Australian plays. It has produced work of such notable Australian playwrights as Brendan Cowell, Toby Schmitz, Sue Smith and Suzie Miller.

Each year, the Old Fitzroy Theatre hosts up to 12 main stage productions. These run for approximately four weeks from Tuesday to Saturday at 8pm and Sundays at 5pm. Every September, during the eight week submission process, the competition to fill these slots is fierce and the standard of work is as good as independent theatre gets anywhere in the world.

The Ensemble Theatre in Kirribilli, Sydney is Australia's longest, continuously running professional theatre company and has constantly maintained the highest standards in theatrical presentation.

Since its inception, the Ensemble has presented over 350 productions at its home venue, the Playhouse, Sydney Opera House, Theatre Royal and the Seymour Centre. Glen Street Theatre is a 400 seat proscenium arch auditorium that presents a subscription season of professional theatre productions, quality children’s shows and community events throughout the year including school productions and dance concerts.

Glen Street Theatre is located in Belrose on Sydney’s north shore, approximately 20 minutes drive from the CBD. The theatre regularly presents productions from many of Australia’s major performing arts companies including Sydney Theatre Company, Company B Belvoir, Bell Shakespeare, Griffin Theatre Company, Queensland Theatre Company, Melbourne’s Playbox Theatre, Perth Theatre Company, The State Theatre Company of South Australia and other significant independent production companies including Circus Oz, Pork Chop Productions, Performing Lines and Hit Productions.

The Hayden Orpheum at Cremorne began life as The Orpheum on October 3, 1935.

It was, at the time, a much grander movie theatre than most suburban movie houses, and for many years made the clumsily-worded boast of being “Sydney’s only suburban city movie theatre”. The justification for this claim was that it was built as a theatre, and could screen films or live cast musicals for its 1735 seats, over two levels.

Backstage there were dressing rooms, an orchestra pit, and a functioning fly-tower to store and ‘fly’ scenery. It was a proper ‘legit’ stage and played host to the Australian ballet etc.

The theatre remained intact, albeit very run down, until it was bought by commercial property developers. Despite the protests of some theatre supporters, it was savagely ripped apart, and a second-rate shopping arcade and a health gymnasium installed. A concrete slab was installed horizontally, and the only part of the theatre that remained above it was the decaying art deco ceiling and parts of the proscenium. It was virtually inaccessible to all - apart from the pigeons who made it their home.
