The Hoop Pine is the focus of the Shires name, emblem and logo some magnificent specimen trees can be found at the Kumbartcho Sanctuary, which is set on 6 hectares of natural habitat, including a boundary with the South Pine River. Kumbartcho hosts the Pine Rivers Community Nursery. The Nursery produces local native plants perfect for planting in the district. This delightful walk takes you through some of the best rainforest in Brisbane Forest Park. The rainforest is more varied here, with strangler figs, buttressed trees, stinging trees and large rainforest trees such as white booyong. After walking for about 500 metres you will come to a clearing beside the road - Western Window - with a magnificent view over the scenic rim of mountains to the west. You can see Cunningham's Gap and Mount Barney on a clear day. Walk down some steps and you will reach a junction. If you take the track to the right, you will walk below the rocky basalt cliffs and through wet sclerophyll forest and rainforest.

The Samford District Historical Museum boasts a comprehensive collection of buildings of local significance and purpose built replicas. There's also an Aboriginal kippa-making ceremony diorama as well as displays featuring local rural industries, horse-drawn transport, Ferny Grove to Dayboro railway (1918 to 1955), education and domestic life. Groups, by prior arrangement, can be entertained with demonstrations of old-time working with timber skills, blacksmithing, olden day school and more. Researchers will be amazed at the reference collection of photographs, published local history books, newspaper cuttings, historical maps and other files covering Samford district's growth and changes since the mid 1850s to current times. The rustic and rural buildings also provide ideal settings for wedding photos.

On a clear day, the Morelia Track, Manorina offers spectacular views as far as the sparkling white sand hills of Moreton Island. Walk from the picnic area through tall open forest to the summit of Mount Nebo. Patches of rainforest along the way provide a cool contrast to the more open forest and pockets of cabbage tree palm rainforest. At the end of the walk there are large granite boulders on which to sit and ponder, and perhaps plan your next walk.

Take a journey through open eucalypt woodlands, scribbly gum forests and lush subtropical rainforests. Start your park visit at Walkabout Creek Discovery Centre. Then travel into the cooler forests of Southern D'Aguilar to enjoy scenic lookouts, walking tracks and shady picnic areas. At Jolly's lookout (wheelchair-accessible), cook a barbecue while taking in the views over Samford Valley. At Boombana, take a short rainforest walk among strangler figs and climbing vines. In the northern Mount Mee section of the park, discover the remains of an historic sawmill in the Gantry day-use area. Fit walkers can hike the Somerset trail for views of Somerset and Wivenhoe lakes. The rockpool at Rocky Hole is surrounded by eucalypt forest and is a great place for a cooling swim in summer. Discover north Brisbane’s railway history by cycling the tracks of the old Ferny Grove Line that once continued onto Dayboro, cutting through Camp Mountain to Samford. After a derailing disaster led to the trainline closing, the area was turned into the Samford Valley Rail Trail which today runs 8.3 kilometres starting from the Ferny Grove Railway Station. Cycle your way through Samford Forest, part of the ‘Mountains to Mangroves’ bushland corridor protecting wildlife, before coming out to rolling farmland around the base of Camp Mountain. Also through this section you will come across a memorial cairn marking the site of the 1946 railway disaster....

Samford Conservation Park, around 20 kilometres from the city is a refuge for native flora and fauna, protecting important habitats for reptiles, mammals and birds. You can even take your dog on the shared trails ... as long as it's on a leash.
