Funcity Sunshine Logo and Images

Funcity Sunshine

486 Ballarat Road, Sunshine VIC 3020

Fun City Go Karts was the original brilliant idea of Darren Shaw, after seeing some great Go Kart Entertainment venues in Texas USA in Oct 1989. Darren came back to Australia and started a partnership with Jim Voliotis and his mate Shaun. Darren and Jim had been friends for some time and they both shared a passion with Super Sedan Racing.

They introduced Geoff Trewin into the partnership after Shaun left, and built the original "Fun City Go Karts" in Tottenham, on Sunshine road, where the Westco Jeans outlet is today. Fun City Go Karts opened to the Public on the 6th December 1990. In 1991 Darren and Geoff built a GoKart Track in Woodridge Queensland, a western suburb of Brisbane, that was very similar to Tottenham. We later sold the Track to Jim for his third share of Tottenham and his friend Ian who ran the business for a while before retiring. Jim has gone back to tow trucks in Qld, another one of his passions. Darren and Geoff also opened an outdoor Gokart Track at the Laverton outdoor market (Rubbles & Riches), we also sold this business off to Ian after he came back from Queensland.

Melbourne was founded on the east-west axis of the Yarra River. At first, the north bank was developed with commercial and residential buildings, and land on the south bank left largely vacant. After the Swanston St-Princes Bridge-St Kilda Road line formed a north-south axis, the sloping land to the south-east, bounded by the river, Anderson St, Domain Rd and St Kilda Road, was set apart in 1841 as the Domain parkland, including a reserve for a future Government House. When Ferdinand von Mueller was appointed Director of the Botanic Gardens in 1857, he was in charge of landscaping the whole Domain, including the reserve, as one parkland.

Illustrators Australia Logo and Images

Illustrators Australia

6/208 Sydney Rd, Brunswick VIC 3056

The story of Illustrators Australia involved a lot more work from its founding members, but was born from the need to develop a collective that could work together to protect the rights of individual illustrators against exploitation by employers.

Originally conceived by Faye Plamka who put the call out to fellow illustrators in 1989, Illustrators Australia developed from discussions about mutual problems faced by illustrators. After much hard work figuring out the legalities of forming an association and establishing a code of conduct, IA was enthusiastically launched to the illustration community.

Since that time, IA has grown and developed in many ways. But one way we haven’t changed is that we have always been run by illustrators, for the benefit of illustrators. If you are interested in becoming part of the Illustrators Australia community why not join now.

The first race meeting held here took place on rough river flats beside the Maribyrnong River in March 1840, when Melbourne was barely five years old. It wasn't the very first documented horse race in Melbourne – that took place at a site near today's Southern Cross Station, in March 1838.

Of course, Flemington is synonymous with Australia's premier horse race, the Melbourne Cup, run here on the first Tuesday in November since 1861.

As well as the horses and the fashions of the Spring Racing Carnival, it's worth heading out to Flemington any time of the year to admire the landscaped gardens, take a walking tour and visit the Heritage Centre's exhibition of racing paraphernalia.
