‘Step inside and do time’ at Fremantle Prison, one of Western Australia\'s premier visitor attractions.

The Prison was built by convicts in the 1850s and was continually used as a place of incarceration and punishment for almost 140 years. Decommissioned as an operating maximum-security gaol in 1991, the empty prison with its thick limestone walls, solitary cells and gallows is a monument to a system of punishment that is uncomfortably recent.
Visitors are entertained daily by experienced guides on Prison Day Tours that run every 30 minutes between 10am and 5pm.
Adventurous visitors can explore the labyrinth of tunnels 20m beneath the Prison by foot and by boat on a Tunnel Tour from 9am daily.
Brave visitors can delve into the darker side of the Prison’s history on a spooky Torchlight Tour every Wednesday and Friday evening.

Lovers of old buildings will be inspired by the free style interpretation of classical architecture evident in the Fremantle Town Hall. Home to the tourist office on the ground floor, it is a great spot to start your walking tour of Fremantle. The Italian-style architecture was designed by the well-known Melbourne architects Grainger and D'Ebro with a richly decorated tower and steep mansard roof, the building also features a black swan which is the emblem of Western Australia. Officially opened in 1887, it has been fully restored to its original grandeur.

Fremantle is a thriving cultural hub with a diversity of beautiful buildings with richly decorated façades. Wander the streets and enjoy historic sites such as the Roundhouse, Fremantle Prison and The Markets.

Just a thirty minute drive or train ride from the City, Fremantle Town Hall is an important icon of Western Australia’s history.

The Fremantle War Memorial, located at Monument Hill in Fremantle, is surrounded by beautiful rose gardens and well maintained lawns. It offers almost 360-degree views of Fremantle, and is an ideal vantage point to look out over Fremantle Harbour and Garden Island.

Take some time out to relax on the lawns and enjoy the view whilst you reflect the true meaning of the memorial and appreciate the meaningful architecture.

Designed by architects J F Allen and C H Nicholas, it is constructed out of Toodyay Stone and was built and unveiled in 1928. A time capsule was placed in the monument on the day of unveiling.

Surrounded by an eleven acre reserve, the main memorial is encircled on three sides by eight smaller memorials. The memorial commemorates World War I and II, the Korean War, Malayan Emergency and Vietnam War.

Gallery East represents emerging and established contemporary Western Australian artists, as well as specialising in the traditinal and contemporary arts and crafts of Japan - particularly Japanese prints. The gallery holds 12 exhibitions each year. The work of its artists can be accessed on the gallery website.

The Museum houses a number of galleries that explore Western Australia’s relationship with the sea.
From leisure boats, pearling luggers and handcrafted sailing boats through to the winning America’s Cup yacht, Australia 11, visitors will be inspired by these iconic vessels and Western Australia’s rich maritime heritage.
The Oberon class submarine – HMAS Ovens – is another major attraction with daily tours by experienced guides (fee applies).
 

HMAS Ovens is a former Royal Australian Navy Oberon Class submarine. It is a major iconic object and attraction for the Western Australian Museum - Maritime. The Museum offers a special guided tour through the submarine that will give you an idea what it would have been like to serve in this Cold War vessel.

Daily tours run during normal opening hours from 10.00am to 4.30pm (Last tour starts 3.30pm - no advance bookings available for 3.30 tour on weekends)

Come to the Fremantle harbour on the weekends and you‘ll find the E Shed Markets. What a great way to spend your weekend! The E Shed cargo store has been a part of Victoria Quay for almost 100 years and it has an unusually high standard of detailing for a wharf facility. The Western Australian Museum — Shipwreck Galleries is recognised as the foremost maritime archaeology museum in the southern hemisphere.

The Museum is housed in 1850s-era Commissariat building and has since been restored to its historic glory. Steeped in history, the galleries house hundreds of relics from ships wrecked along WA’s treacherous coastline, including the original timbers from the Batavia (wrecked in 1629), the de Vlamingh plate, and also countless artefacts from the Dutch shipwrecks Zuytdorp, Zeewijk and Vergulde Draeck.

Fremantle Arts Centre (FAC) is a multi-arts organisation that’s been going strong for 36 years. Located on Finnerty Street, the historic site was originally the first purpose-built ‘lunatic’ asylum in WA. It has since been a women’s home, a naval base during WW1 and WW2 and a technical college before opening as Fremantle Arts Centre in 1972.

Fremantle Arts Centre operates a number of programming streams, with over 30 staff members operating the Exhibitions, Learning, Events & Music, Communications, Finance, Reception and Grounds departments, not to mention the best little shop in town, Found.

The Exhibitions team manage a cutting-edge selection of contemporary arts from practitioners locally, nationally and internationally, with a growing Residencies program running alongside. FAC also manages the Moores Building on Henry Street in the west end.

Insideof The Anthony Riding Gallery, there’s 500sq m of exhibition space to play with. Outside, there’s another 100sq m of space for sculpture. All up, it’s a super-sized space for a unique gallery aimed at showcasing world-class art from a hand-picked group of emerging and established artists all with West Australian connections.
“Perth is the only city in the world where something like this can be born, where you can do a project as bold as this,” Riding says. “Our isolation breeds a unique creative environment, a different perspective on the world.”

With 25 years experience in Aboriginal Arts, Japingka Gallery’s directors have curated and presented over one hundred exhibitions of Aboriginal painting, prints and sculpture, both in Australia and internationally. Japingka Gallery opened at its present location in 1995, as an adjunct to the Aboriginal art and design company Desert Designs which began in Fremantle in 1984. The gallery site had previously been the home of Aboriginal Art centre Birukmarri Gallery which established there in 1985. Japingka Gallery is based in an historic two-storey warehouse building in the heart of the port city of Fremantle. With four hundred square metres of exhibition space and stockrooms dedicated to contemporary Aboriginal Art, Japingka Gallery provides a broad view of the artworks of indigenous communities and regions and a selected exhibition program in its first floor galleries.
 

Home to two galleries, the KIDOGO ARTHOUSE is a unique exhibition space located at the edge of the sea in Fremantle. Housed in a beautiful, heritage-listed building, the galleries provide pristine art space in a rustic setting where a wide variety of artwork is exhibited. The Arthouse and surrounding courtyard is also a popular venue for musicians, poets and authors to stage live performances.

The KIDOGO ARTHOUSE hosts an ever-changing and exciting array of art experiences, featuring artists from all over the world whose works are amongst the most innovative, uplifting and thought-provoking found on the contemporary scene. Our schedule regularly features floor talks and symposia with artists and art historians, critics and theorists.

The KIDOGO ARTHOUSE galleries are available for hire for functions and weddings, as well as for exhibitions.

The art of candy making is around 200 years old dating back to the Scandinavian Vikings who used honey from wild bees to make a drink called Mead that eventually derived into a hard candy.

The trade was popularised in the 1800's by a small group of candy makers in Denmark and Germany.

The Round House Precinct is the oldest surviving public building in Western Australia. It was built as a gaol and was the first permanent building in the colony. It was designed by HW Reveley, the colony's first civil engineer, and built in 1830. Wander around the Round House and marvel at the diverse uses of this historic building including its initial use as a goal and gaolers residence, it was later used as police lock up, and then as a home for the chief constable, his wife and their 10 children. It is now a popular tourist attraction. Enjoy the spectacular views from the headland which overlooks the river mouth and has uninterrupted views of Cockburn Sound. A team of volunteer guides are on duty at the Round House during opening hours. They operate the signal station, fire the time gun and drop the time ball every day at 1.00pm. The Round House is an integral stop on any self-guided tour discovering Fremantle's history. The free CAT bus is the easiest way to get around Fremantle and see all of the interesting sights. The fully protected nature reserve of Carnac Island is an important habitat for the rare Australian sea lion. Located south of Fremantle, Carnac Island is also known as a breeding area for many seabirds including a variety of Tern species, Little Penguins and many other local seabirds. On a cruise near the island you're also likely to see pods of wild bottlenose dolphins which are common in the area. Carnac is a well-known and popular spot for fishing, especially on the eastern side of the island where there's a sheltered bay to drop anchor.

Take a stroll through the picturesque grounds of Fremantle Cemetery to explore the final resting place of many prominent Australians. Follow the heritage trail and discover much about Western Australia's history. Look for the state's earliest gravestones of the pioneers that first settled in the Swan River colony. The cemetery was established in 1899 and since then, many prominent and notorious Australians have been laid to rest here. One of the most visited gravesites in Australia is that of rock band AC/DC's lead singer Bon Scott who was laid to rest at Fremantle Cemetery in 1980. The gravesite has become a cultural landmark and has been heritage listed by the National Trust. Fans of Bon Scott can also visit a tribute statue to the late singer in Fremantle Fisherman's Wharf. The cemetery is also home to the late bushranger Moondyne Joe and engineer C.Y. O'Connor who created Fremantle Harbour and the world's longest water main, the Goldfields Pipeline. Most recently, Australian actor Heath Ledger was cremated at the cemetery's crematorium. St Johns Anglican Church and Kings Square are affectionately known by the locals as the true heart of Fremantle. The striking gothic architecture of the 1880s church entices bystanders in to take a closer look. Wander through the magnificent building and look at the stained glass windows that used to feature in the church that previously stood on the site. The church has an enviable location overlooking the picturesque Kings Square. Established in 1833, Kings Square is also home to the Old Town Hall along with its successor, the new Town Hall Centre where you can find the town's Tourist Bureau. Relax under the shade of the giant Morton Bay Fig Trees and take in the beauty of the historic buildings surrounding you. Wander around the square admiring the statues and artworks located throughout, or enjoy a life size game of chess. A tram departs every hour on a tour of Fremantle showcasing some of the many significant landmarks of this historic port town. St Johns Church and Kings Square are a half hour drive from Perth or alternatively a five minute walk from the Fremantle train station.

St Patrick's Catholic Church is a magnificent Gothic style church built at the turn of the century using local limestone. Towering over its neighbours in Fremantle, the place of worship is a significant landmark of this coastal town. As you enter St Patrick's your eyes will be drawn to the spectacular vibrant tapestry hanging above the pulpit at the front of the church. Crafted in Ireland, the enormous work of art is 50 square metres. Made of Australian wool, it weighs nearly one tonne. Study the symbolism within the tapestry and the intricate detail of the talented artist who designed the Fremantle Icon. Enjoy the changing colours as the sun shines down through the magnificent stained glass windows that feature throughout the old church. Wander around the church grounds to examine the grand 1900s building to envisage the mammoth task involved in constructing such a huge basilica. St Patrick's is located in the beautiful town of Fremantle, 30 minutes drive south of Perth. Allow at least a day to discover the port town that has played such a significant role in shaping the state.

The Fremantle Railway Station is a memorable historical landmark for visitors to the renowned port city of Fremantle. Catch the train from Perth, or just stop in on your walking tour of Fremantle. Wander through the early 20th century building, which closely resembles England's Cambridge railway station. Initially the station was built to handle the influx of gold miners arriving by ship and heading out to the goldfields. The old building is a charming memorial of the hopeful miners transiting through and boarding the trains in search of their fortunes. Take note of the brick work in the archway which was constructed with local Donnybrook stone. As you walk out into Fremantle examine the façade of the station with the collection of white swans above the main arch. Amidst the small parkland outside sits an unusual drinking fountain that was assembled in honour of two men who died while on a gold expedition. Fremantle boasts the most historical buildings of any town in Western Australia and the 100 year old railway station is a fine example of what is on offer.
