Burrum Coast National Park conserves essential habitat for wildlife of the coastal vegetation communities. Remarkable cabbage tree palm forests are one of several coastal lowland vegetation types protected in the Woodgate section of this park. The Melaleuca track passes through wallum vegetation and around saltpans, paperbark swamps and mangroves. Birds are abundant near swamps and mangroves in the early morning.
The Woodgate section of Burrum Coast National Park conserves essential habitat for wildlife of the coastal vegetation communities. It starts with a boardwalk experience through a melaleuca (tea tree) swamp. This part is wheelchair accessible and offers a very enjoyable 20-minute return experience for visitors with restricted mobility. The two hour Banksia Track circuit then takes over through melaleuca swamp, open forest into palm forest and finally through wallum heath where wildflowers bloom between August and October. Timing a visit to see the wildflowers is very rewarding for photographers, birdwatchers and those interested in native plants.
