Yeronga Memorial Park Logo and Images

Yeronga Memorial Park

Ipswich Road, Yeronga QLD 4104

Yeronga Memorial Park is a living reminder of the impact WWI had on a community. Of the 559 residents who enlisted from (then) Stephens Shire, 97 names appear on marble tablets in the centre of a domed pavilion, designed by returned serviceman Sergeant Henry Priest (9th Battalion) and fine-tuned by architect George Trotter. A similar number of trees were planted between 1917 and 1919. Each tree represented a local life lost. Today, the mature weeping figs of Honour Avenue, one of Australia's earliest such boulevards, create a cathedral-like avenue accessible to walkers and cyclists. A slight detour along a palm-lined footpath takes visitors to the stone memorial built in 1921. Memorial gates were erected that year too at either end of the avenue. The dedication on the southern inner pier of the Ipswich Road Gates honours the women workers of the Stephens Shire. Until WWI, Queensland had few public memorials. The outpouring of grief at the loss of 60,000 Australian lives, buried in Europe, the Middle East and North Africa, changed townscapes across the country. Recent work has seen the inclusion of memorials to later conflicts and the replacement of lost plaques by the trees, bearing soldiers' names.

Toowong Memorial Park Logo and Images

Toowong Memorial Park

65 Sylvan Road, Toowong QLD 4066

Toowong Memorial Park, home to Western Districts Rugby Football Club, can be packed with spectators in season, unaware of historic tributes just metres from the footy oval, towards Brisbane River. Parliamentarian EM Macartney officially opened Toowong Memorial Park on 7 September 1918 in honour of the 101 locals who enlisted in WWI. Decorative wrought iron memorial gates were erected to mark the park's official opening. Beyond, on the summit of a ridge, is the 12 metre high Toowong Soldiers' Memorial, unveiled by Governor Sir Matthew Nathan on 2 July 1922. A fluted column with a Queensland marble drinking fountain at its base, surrounded by carved wreaths and swags, this memorial's base provides a valuable roll call of local involvement, naming all who enlisted on three marble slabs. A commemorative avenue of palms was planted in 1918. A large section was relocated in 1993 to run parallel to Sylvan Road from the car park, curving gently towards the memorial gates. Dawn ANZAC Day services proceed along this avenue, gathering at a more recent RSL memorial cairn, inside the gates.

Graceville Memorial Park Logo and Images

Graceville Memorial Park

173 Oxley Road, Graceville QLD 4075

Graceville Memorial Park is better recognised for cricket ovals, complete with grandstand similar to the WWI memorial grandstand at Bulimba, yet it offers its own tributes to heroism, living and man-made. Prior to the then Sherwood Shire's war memorial unveiling in November 1920, 52 bunya pines and cotton trees were planted along Plumridge and Appel streets, commemorating its war dead, 51 soldiers and one nurse. They were among 265 enlisted local men and seven nurses. A 5.5 metre high cenotaph, created by AL Petrie with a copper scroll made by Norwegian craftsman Ernest Gunderson, was unveiled by Lieutenant Edwin Maurice Little of Corinda, a blind and maimed returned soldier. The polished grey granite column set on a light grey granite pedestal is crowned by a polished ball, etched with a map of Australia and the word 'ANZAC'. An avenue of bauhinias, cabbage tree palms and Chinese elms was planted either side of a drive from Oxley Road leading to the memorial within the park reserve. A single line of figs and camphor laurels continued west from the memorial towards Appel Street. The reserve has been officially known as Graceville Memorial Park since 1926. Plaques commemorating subsequent conflicts have been added.

Oxley War Memorial Logo and Images

Oxley War Memorial

1218 Oxley Road, Oxley QLD 4075

The soldier statue in Oxley is unmistakeably Australian, with his slouch hat and 'rising sun' hat badge, face slightly downturned as he stands facing west. This statue, created by Ipswich monumental mason Frank Williams from Ipswich, and unveiled in 1920, found its final resting place in the 1980s, moved to make way for roadworks from its original siting on the major Brisbane southside arterial, Ipswich Road. The soldier statue was a quaintly Queensland favourite style of WWI memorial, exhibiting common traits of the volunteer soldiers: youth, innocence, loyalty and courage among them. Oxley's monument bears a marble plaque specifically naming the district's 15 dead, among the 60,000 mostly young Australian men to be buried where they fell in Europe, the Middle East and northern Africa and a valuable record of local involvement. Frank Williams created many around southern Queensland, including in Esk and Boonah. He also produced the evocative Weeping Mother Memorial at Gatton. Small marble plaques commemorating involvement in subsequent international conflicts have been added. Oxley Memorial Park draws crowds for solemn remembrance on 25 April every year.
