Oxley War Memorial Logo and Images

Oxley War Memorial

1218 Oxley Road, Oxley QLD 4075

The soldier statue in Oxley is unmistakeably Australian, with his slouch hat and 'rising sun' hat badge, face slightly downturned as he stands facing west. This statue, created by Ipswich monumental mason Frank Williams from Ipswich, and unveiled in 1920, found its final resting place in the 1980s, moved to make way for roadworks from its original siting on the major Brisbane southside arterial, Ipswich Road. The soldier statue was a quaintly Queensland favourite style of WWI memorial, exhibiting common traits of the volunteer soldiers: youth, innocence, loyalty and courage among them. Oxley's monument bears a marble plaque specifically naming the district's 15 dead, among the 60,000 mostly young Australian men to be buried where they fell in Europe, the Middle East and northern Africa and a valuable record of local involvement. Frank Williams created many around southern Queensland, including in Esk and Boonah. He also produced the evocative Weeping Mother Memorial at Gatton. Small marble plaques commemorating involvement in subsequent international conflicts have been added. Oxley Memorial Park draws crowds for solemn remembrance on 25 April every year.

Ebbw Vale Memorial Park Logo and Images

Ebbw Vale Memorial Park

Brisbane Road, Ebbw Vale QLD 4304
In the Ipswich suburb of Ebbw Vale, the memory of young men cut down in their prime in WWI lingers by a football field. The AL Petrie soldier statue memorial was originally unveiled near Ebbw Vale railway station on 14 May 1918. It was relocated in 1969 to Ebbw Vale Memorial Park, once known as the Whitwood grounds, named after a local colliery which had fielded two soccer teams since the 1890s. Among the 22 names of those who enlisted in WWI are soccer team members William Jeffrey, Peter Jeffrey, H Mills and LW Breslin. Unlike other states which favoured more architectural monuments, many Queensland communities chose the soldier statue for its traits of youth, masculinity, loyalty, bravery and innocence. Soccer is still played on the grounds, along with cricket, softball and touch football and major community gatherings.

School Road, Redbank Plains QLD 4301
See koalas in the wild on these easy to moderate walking trails through White Rock-Spring Mountain Conservation Estate. The Six Mile Creek, Bluff Lookout and Little White Rock Trails can be done together or in sections. Along these trails you will see large swamp box and blue gums, and if you are lucky you might spot a shy lace monitor. Keep an eye out for scratches and droppings at the base of large gums which indicate that a koala may be resting in the branches. Cool down as you cross Six Mile Creek and inspect a number of revegetation areas under restoration. A moderate level track with rough surfaces and steep inclines takes you to the Bluff Lookout with tree-top views over Six Mile Creek and views back into the estate. Pass along the base of a rocky ridge to see caves and relics of a World War Two training bunker. The spotted gum forest here supports a local koala population. Cobb & Co Tourist Drive

Mount Crosby Road, North Tivoli QLD 4305
The Cobb & Co Tourist Drive is a scenic route between between Ipswich and Toowoomba via the Lockyer Valley. The drive celebrates the first mail route awarded to Cobb & Co in Queensland when, on January 1, 1866 the mail service commenced from Brisbane to Ipswich. The drive follows the railway line and the original Cobb & Co route between Ipswich and Gatton. Just as Cobb & Co's passengers needed occasional stops during their journey, so do modern-day travellers. So, along the Cobb & Co Tourist Drive, three convenient locations in Rosewood, Forest Hill and Gatton have been designated Staging Posts. All Staging Posts are situated where services, such as public toilets and the availability of food and drinks, are accessible seven days a week....
