This park features a chain of scenic continental islands, close to the Wet Tropics coast near Mission Beach. Clad in lush rainforest and woodlands and surrounded by coral reefs, tidal flats and sandy beaches, the islands were home to the original 'beachcomber', E.J. Banfield. The islands are part of the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage area. The most accessible of the Family Islands is Dunk Island. On Dunk Island, take an easy stroll through the rainforest to a secluded beach or embark on a climb to the summit of Mount Kootaloo for scenic reef and mainland views. Near the lookout, discover the remains of a World War II radar station. Continue on the Island circuit walk and stop to relax at Coconut Beach under the shade of the calophyllum trees. Go birdwatching and butterfly spotting along the walking tracks. Don mask and snorkel to explore the fringing reef from Muggy Muggy beach. This park protects some of the last remaining lowland rainforest in the wet tropics, including a rare patch of licuala fan palm forest and is one of the few places you're likely to see an unusual and endangered bird, the southern cassowary. The park is within the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area. Enjoy a barbecue at Lacey Creek day-use area and learn about cassowaries at the information shelter. Nearby, signs in the cassowary arboretum identify the trees that cassowaries feed on. Stroll along the short circuit walk through the forest and past a viewing platform overlooking the creek. Take a picnic to Licuala day-use area and follow the children's cassowary walk. Amble along the longer circuit walk that leads you under the bright green, patterned canopy of licuala fan palms. Keep a lookout for cassowaries and always 'Be Cass-o-wary!'

This park, on the scenic coast just north of Mission Beach, contains some of the few remaining patches of undisturbed tropical lowland rainforest in North Queensland. These rainforest remnants are important habitat for the endangered southern cassowary. Bicton Hill is the main feature of the park. The summit of Bicton Hill was historically used as a lookout by Aboriginal people and later as a ship lookout by the area's first permanent European residents. Challenge yourself on the four kilometre Bicton Hill circuit walking track and be rewarded with spectacular mainland and island views, and a chance to see rare rainforest plants and the elusive cassowary. Stay on the track at all times and take care around cliffs, steep slopes and at the lookout.

The Lady Bowen was a 66 metre long schooner, which hit reef almost 48 kilometres from where she eventually sank, and now sits in the ocean as a reef herself, off the coast of Mission Beach. At over 100 years old and resting under 34 metres of water, the Lady Bowen dive site is now home to amazing coral formations and a plethora of colourful and friendly marine life. Nature's finest will be waiting at the hull of the wreck to meet you, in the form of gropers, sea snakes, giant turtles, lionfish and barracuda. The depth and enormity of the wreck make it perfect for intermediate to advanced divers.

Eddy Reef is located off Mission Beach and is accessible on day boats. Divers exploring this reef will find a maze of coral ridges in depths from 10 to 20 metres that are covered in some of the most beautiful corals - wide gorgonians, lovely pink whip corals and delicate soft corals. Between these corals live angelfish, surgeonfish, boxfish, pufferfish, lionfish, wrasse and many other reef species. Some of the larger fish found at Eddy Reef include barramundi cod, coral trout and gropers, but a close inspection of the coral will also reveal many small critters like nudibranchs, flatworms, shrimps and coral crabs.

Green and Hawksbill turtles are regularly sighted, large cod, big schools of spangled emperors, fusiliers, Whitetip reef sharks, barracuda and trevally. Manta Rays occur in winter. There is good snorkelling from the cay or Boat.

        This popular coastal trail is an enjoyable and picturesque four kilometre (one way) route that includes beach and forest walking as well as island views. The track cuts through a wide variety of coastal rainforests to get to beaches and rocky headlands. It offers great views of the Family Group of Islands and the chance to see cassowaries, wallabies and other rainforest animals. Peer down into the ocean from lookout points to spot turtles, dugongs and dolphins. The Kennedy Walking Track takes you from South Mission to Kennedy Bay, past the landing place of 1848 explorer Edmund Beasley Court Kennedy. If you have the time you can then walk the length of Kennedy Bay along the beach to finish at the Hull River. The communities of Hull and Tully Heads are on the other side. Return is via the same pathway. This trail is suitable for a wide range of walkers, although the second half includes more stairs and a bit of rock-hopping. There is a wide boardwalk to the first beach, known as Lover's Beach....
