The completion of the Nepean Dam in 1935 concluded the development of the Upper Nepean catchment. The 81 metre high dam holds water from a 320 square kilometre catchment, forming a lake of 325 hectares with a capacity of 70,170 megalitres. The dams of the Upper Nepean collect water from the catchments of the Cataract, Cordeaux, Avon and Nepean rivers, which are tributaries of the Upper Hawkesbury-Nepean River. These systems supply water to the Macarthur and Illawarra regions, the Wollondilly Shire, and metropolitan Sydney. Wirrimbirra Sanctuary

Wirrimbirra Sanctuary is owned by the National Trust of Australia (NSW), and managed as a wildlife reserve by David. G. Stead Memorial Wildlife Research Foundation of Australia. It was created in the 1960s by Thistle Stead preserving 'Bargo Brush' and promoting propagation of Australian native plants. Wirrimbirra operates as a flora and fauna reserve, education and research centre. Wirrimbirra has over 200 acres of preserved native bushland. The unique flora is part of its preserve, including endangered species; also a fauna reserve, where you may see wallabies, kangaroos, echidnas, possums, and other native animals in natural habitats. Wirrimbirra Sanctuary has walking trails, environmental studies centre, parking, picnic facilities, well equipped school room, resource room and a barbecue area. Avon is the third and the largest of the four upper Nepean Dams. It was completed in 1927 to serve the Sydney area. The 72 metre high Avon Dam holds water from a 140 square kilometre catchment, forming a lake of 1,055 hectares, with a capacity of 214,360 megalitres. The dams of the Upper Nepean collect water from the catchments of the Cataract, Cordeaux, Avon and Nepean rivers, which are tributaries of the Upper Hawkesbury-Nepean River.
