As well as being an idyllic place for a scenic drive, a picnic with friends, or bushwalking, Mundaring Weir is also an important part of Western Australia's heritage. Located in natural bushland in the Perth Hills, Mundaring Weir is one of the world's greatest engineering projects. Completed in 1903, the Weir was the start of the water pipeline that pumped water to the Kalgoorlie goldfields, some 700 kilometres away. At the foot of the weir is the Number 1 Pump Station Museum where you can learn more about the brilliant engineer behind the project, C.Y. O'Connor, who endured much public criticism and tragically took his own life. A drive trail that follows the pipeline called the Golden Pipeline Heritage Trail starts at the museum. There are several walking trails around Mundaring Weir that take you deep into virgin bush. You'll see beautiful native plants, animals and plenty of birds. You can also walk across the massive concrete Weir wall. Pack a picnic and enjoy the barbecue facilities, grassed areas and shady trees. While improvement works are underway, there will be limited access both above and below the Weir wall. Mundaring Weir is about a 40 minute drive from Perth....

Fred Jacoby Park is a great spot for picnics, watching wildlife, photography or just relaxing before, or after heading off, on one of the numerous walk trails within the Beelu National Park. Fully equipped with picnic facilities, free barbecues and a children's playground, you will enjoy communing with nature in this beautifully landscaped park. The park features a range of trees from many parts of the world including one of the biggest English Oak Trees in Western Australia. A boardwalk enables visitors to get in under the canopy of this 140 year old heritage listed tree, whilst protecting the tree roots from compaction. Beelu National Park has over 3,000 hectares of park land abundant with flora and fauna that is native to Western Australia. See possums, echidnas, kangaroos and wallabies as well as Jarrah trees, Marri trees and Banksias. Mundaring is located less than an hour's drive from Perth via Kalamunda or Midland....

Valley Camp is located in the stunning Avon Valley National Park. Close to jarrah, marri and powderbark forest, the valleys themselves are forested with wandoo, making for peaceful bushwalks through the area. It's also a great place to see a wide variety of wildflowers and birdlife in the Spring. The campground itself is popular for launching canoes into the Avon River, and features picnic tables, fire rings, toilets and water (untreated). Mundaring invites you into the heart of the hills to wander through some of Western Australia's oldest conservation areas, marvel at one of the world's great engineering feats, Mundaring Weir, or hit the epic Munda Biddi Bike Trail. An easy daytrip from Perth, just follow the Great Eastern Highway and you'll arrive in Mundaring within 40 minutes. From here, it's a leisurely drive through the forests to reach Mundaring Weir, engineered by C Y O'Connor in the 1890s to feed freshwater to the goldfields 560 kilometres to the east. To continue your historical journey, head for the original steam pumping station or follow the Golden Pipeline Heritage Trail into the outback. Other adventures await at the start of the Munda Biddi BikeTrail, one of few places on Earth where you can cycle hundreds of kilometres off road through stunning biodiversity hotspots. There's also the Railway Heritage Trail that retraces the 70 kilometre Fremantle to York railway line, passing through Western Australia's first conservation area, John Forrest National Park, and revealing the unique history and character of the small settlements that sprang up along the railway line. Lovers of art and culture will delight in a day spent at the Mundaring Community Sculpture Park. Artistic sculptures are set amidst nature's own masterpieces of Golden Wattles, gums, and wildflowers. Immerse yourself in the local history, appreciate the artistic merits of the sculptures, and enjoy the beautiful natural environment. Mundaring Community Sculpture Park is located on the site of the former Mundaring Railway Station. Eight Western Australian artists have created sculptures for the park. In addition to creating an individual sculpture, artist Trevor Woodward was involved in formulating the original design concept of the park. The visually exciting Moodae-ring acoustic sculpture is carved from Karri and Wandoo timbers and is fun to experience. A variety of sounds can be heard by pressing the touch activated panels. If you have time, take a walk or cycle along the adjacent Railway Reserves Heritage Trail, or pack a picnic to enjoy while the kids take advantage of the well equipped playground. Perth Hills Centre campground is available for public camping every Friday and Saturday night and every night of the week during Western Australia school holidays. At other times it is reserved for school groups. The camping here is at a 'luxury' campground complete with hot showers and kitchen facilities. It is ideal for families and first-time campers, or just those who want to get away for a short break into the fabulous forest environment of Beelu National Park. The Mundaring Visitor Centre is a National Tourism Accredited Visitor Centre located in the old school house in the heart of Mundaring and is the ideal first port of call to seek information on local attractions, trails, activities, wineries, dining and accommodation options. The Mundaring Visitor Centre also manages campsite bookings and general enquiries for Lake Leschenaultia. The centre also houses the district museum, so it is well worth a visit to learn more about the history of the area, as well as a retail section stocked with a selection of souvenirs, local produce, walk and cycle trails, including the long distance Bibbulmun Track and Munda Biddi Trail, regional maps and general information. The staff has a wealth of local knowledge and is able to assist with local maps, information and suggestions to help you get the most out of your visit to the Perth Hills. The Mundaring Visitor Centre is open seven days; from 9:30am to 4.00pm Monday to Saturday and 10:00am to 2:30pm on Sundays and most public holidays (closed Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year's Day and Good Friday)....
