One of Lara's oldest historic buildings, The Lake Bank Hotel, is Lara's only surviving 19th century hotel. It was constructed for Scottish immigrant James Henderson and operated as a licensed hotel until 1908. The distinctive limestone buildings were home to five generations of Mr Henderson's family until purchased by Mr Bisinella in 2010. Two long-time Lara residents and friends , Ian Board and Les Kelly, had long held a desire to establish a Museum in Lara, and that desire was increased after they were involved in organising a remembrance day in January 2009 for the 40th anniversary of the disastrous 1969 Lara Bush Fires. However they struggled to find a suitable building to bring the dream to life. When they learnt that Mr Bisinella had purchased the Lake Bank Hotel they approached him about the possibility of using the historic buildings as a community museum. He enthusiastically agreed and embarked on the major restoration project that again made the old hotel ready for public use. A community organisation, The Lara Heritage and Historical Inc, was incorporated on 12 January 2012, and its volunteer members operate the museum The museum was officially opened on 18th April 2013....

This private collection has been passionately sourcing and displaying one of Australia's largest collection of genuine military uniforms and services such as Police, Red Cross, St Johns Ambulance, Legacy, Salvation Army and Nursing now for over 15 years. Armor Antiques specialises in all types of military antiques, Japanese swords, Samurai armour, helmets, armour, antique pistols, uniforms, medals, badges, swords and militaria from around the world. One of many unique items is the historical and original WW1 German flag which was captured at the surrender of the German garrison in Samoa on 29th August, 1914. This was the first flag surrendered to the Allied forces. A visit to the shop is a wonderful way to spend a few hours of browsing three huge rooms filled with all types of militaria and interesting collectables. The Geelong Maritime Museum at Osborne House displays a mix of sailing ships and submarines, naval heroes and navigation aids. There are photographs, large-scale ship models flags, uniforms, items from shipwrecks and medals. For MHHV members, of especial interest is the information on wartime naval battles and Geelong's early maritime history from 1838. Osborne House was Australia's first Naval College in 1913-14 and a submarine base in 1920-22....

2017 Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race

Join thousands of participants and cycling fans in the spectacular Geelong, Bellarine Peninsula and Surf Coast regions for Australia?s ultimate weekend of cycling at the 2017 Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race. In 2017, the 174 kilometre Elite Men?s Race on Sunday January 29 joins the coveted UCI WorldTour calendar, kicking off world cycling?s classics season for the year with big name riders going head to head in an intense battle for line honours. Preluding the Elite Men?s Race will be the 113 kilometre Deakin University Elite Women?s Race on Saturday January 28, when more than 70 of the world?s best female riders will compete. The People?s Ride on Saturday will follow the same route as the champions where thousands of participants will ride alongside Australia?s only Tour de France winner, Cadel Evans on some of his favourite training roads in the world. Commencing on Friday January 27 with the GMHBA Family Ride, the teams presentations will follow where fans have the opportunity to see the best in cycling up close. Watch the action from Bells Beach, Chilambra climb and 13th Beach, Barwon Heads before heading to the finish line to catch the winner cross the line....
