H.G. Blakeney got it right when he took up 'Mangalore' Station. Blakeney was one of the first surveyors in this area and knew how to select a great parcel of land, and as it turns out, a great spot to throw a line in. He named the property 'Mangalore' after a city in India. Mangalore Fishing Spot is permanently shady, and one of the biggest waterholes along the Warrego River. With plenty of shady trees, steep river banks and easy access for small dingys, Mangalore has all the ingredients needed for a great camping and fishing experience for the whole family. Charleville Historic House Museum

A group of dedicated volunteers are keeping Charleville's history alive. Historic House Museum began life in 1888 and is one of the few 'Queenslanders' left in Charleville. Purposely built as the National Bank and Manager's Residence, It has since been a boarding house and private residence. The building retains many original features, including marble fireplaces. The historic collections include working gramophones, clothing and tools from the town and surrounding stations. The machinery collection includes a Dennis Fire Engine, Rail Ambulance and a replica Cobb and Co Coach. Many people visit to find their ancestors and check up on family members who helped tamed the Outback. At times, visitors to the Museum are treated to a performance by self-taught musician George on the Auto Harp....

This is everyday life for hundreds of children who live in remote areas and are unable to attend 'a typical school'. This tour is the perfect way to find out how 260 children on remote stations attend school. The classroom is over 420,000 square kilometres in size. In Charleville you have the opportunity to see how lessons take place first hand. Visitors are invited to see first hand how the teachers and students operate and interact using modern methods of equipment with their pupils at the Charleville School of Distance Education. Charleville Steiger Vortex Rainmaking Guns

The Steiger Vortex Rainmaking Guns are on display within the Graham Andrews Parklands. It's a fascinating outback story. In 1902 Queensland was in the grip of a great drought. The desperation to produce rain took a unique turn. Queensland's first Government Meteorologist, Mr Clement L Wragge decided to experiment with Steiger Vortex Guns, developed to break up hail over the vineyards of Italy. Wragge had six copies of the 'guns' made hoping they would produce much needed rain. The vertical guns were built and placed strategically throughout Charleville, their barrels pointing directly up into the sky. They were charged with gunpowder, in the hope that the resulting explosion would change the atmospheric pressure and produce rain. Today only two remain intact and are on display in Charleville for all to enjoy. Did you know, Mr Clement Wragge was the first man to name a cyclone in Australia ? Mr Wragge initially named these cyclones after politicians as he thought in some cases they were as much a national disaster as a politician.....

USAAF Top Secret WWII Tour
