The park is five kilometres from the platypus viewing platform at Broken River which is home to a sizeable platypus population. Explorers' Haven is ideally located to access the rainforest scenery of Eungella National Park and is a short drive from Mt Dalrymple, Queensland's second highest mountain at 1280 metres above sea level.

Come and relax in the newly refurbished Eungella Chalet. The outdoor eating area is enclosed so you can take in the beautiful view of the Pioneer Valley below. You can enjoy the fireplace for the cold evenings and the cool mountain breezes in the summer months. Their Restaurant opens from 8 am for breakfast, 12 noon for lunch, 6 pm for dinner. Snacks between meals, scones, coffee and a variety of teas are available all day. Their licensed bar is open from 10 am. They have one and two bedroom fully self contained air conditioned cabins with fireplace, television, front verandah to sit back and take in the beautiful views. Air conditioned queen en-suite rooms are also in The Chalet. The start of the Great Walk Trail is only a short walk from The Chalet. Take the scenic 80 kilometre drive from Mackay through the Pioneer Valley on sealed road to the top of the Clark Range. Pine Grove Circuit track is located within the Eungella National Park and is part of the Mackay Highlands Great Walk. High above the surrounding plains, this mist-shrouded and forest-clad mountain refuge is one of Queensland's most ecologically diverse parks with 860 plant species and a wonderful variety of wildlife. The Pine Grove Circuit is in the Clark Range-Broken River area and is a 1.6 kilometre return track of a moderate grade. It is a fairly level circuit suitable for most visitors. Eungella National Park, approximately a one hour drive west of Mackay, is home to one of the most reliable spots in Australia to spot the elusive platypus - in the wild! From the viewing decks at Broken River, spot this shy creature in it's natural habitat, as well as turtles and other wildlife in this beautiful National Park. The best times to see this special monotreme are at dawn or dusk. The Broken River bridge also provides an excellent vantage point to see platypus swimming in the river below. Platypus are quite shy, so remain as still and as quiet as possible to increase your chances of seeing one. Keep an eye out for air bubbles, as the platypus feeds from the bottom, but surfaces to chew its food and breathe. There are 22 kilometres of walking trails in Eungella, as well as accommodation, restaurants and cafes. Try to spot a platypus if you can! ...

A wonderland of waterfalls, lush flora and volcanic boulder formations contrast against a tapestry of sugar cane fields as you head through The Pioneer Valley and Eungella National Park. Apart from being one of the richest sugar cane growing areas in Australia, this valley is by far one of the most picturesque in Australia, encompassing many rural townships where warm hospitality and delicious food can be enjoyed. Small towns to stop in along the way include Marian, Mirani, Pinnacle, Finch Hatton and finally, Eungella. Marian, the gateway to the valley, is home to the region's largest sugar mill. Call into Melba House, a historic house and accredited Visitor Information Centre situated on the banks of the Pioneer River, to discover the marital house of famous Australian opera singer Dame Nellie Melba. A trip to Finch Hatton Gorge is a must-do. Walk the well formed tracks to Araluen Cascades and the Wheel of Fire Waterfalls and swim in clear rock pools as water cascades from above. In Crediton State Forest, dry eucalypt forests contrast with lush pockets of rainforest and dramatic views. Tall, ancient rose gums continue to survive and discover scattered relics from gold mining in the 1800s or take a scenic drive along Cockies Creek Road. Camping is permitted at Crediton Hall, Denham Range, or enjoy bush camping on grassy flats at The Diggings. Camping permits are required prior to arrival and can be obtained by calling or book online. Ensure you observe all safety signs and have detailed maps of the area to ensure the safety of yourself and all company. Experienced walkers can grab a backpack and journey through the changing landscape of the 56 kilometre Mackay Highlands Great Walk (three to five days - April to September usually offering the best weather)....

The park protects many unusual plants and animals, including the Eungella dayfrog, Mackay tulip oak, Eungella spiny cray and Eungella honeyeater. This isolated mountain refuge lies close to the boundary between subtropical and tropical rainforests and supports species from both vegetation types. Much of the park is remote and inaccessible, and is dissected by gorges. Rainforest dominates the area, but open eucalypt woodland grows on Dick's Tableland in the rugged north-western part of the park. Flowering bottlebrushes and tall river she-oaks line the meandering Broken River - home to platypus. Fern Flat camping area is on the western side of the Broken River picnic area (about 600 metres away). It is a shady spot in tranquil rainforest with a toilet, tent sites, and water provided (treat all water before drinking). The Broken River picnic area itself has information, picnic tables and barbecues. It is a five kilometre drive from Eungella township. Broken River bush camp is set amongst natural bushland adjacent to Broken River. Camping permits are required and fees apply....
