‘Step inside and do time’ at Fremantle Prison, one of Western Australia\'s premier visitor attractions.

The Prison was built by convicts in the 1850s and was continually used as a place of incarceration and punishment for almost 140 years. Decommissioned as an operating maximum-security gaol in 1991, the empty prison with its thick limestone walls, solitary cells and gallows is a monument to a system of punishment that is uncomfortably recent.
Visitors are entertained daily by experienced guides on Prison Day Tours that run every 30 minutes between 10am and 5pm.
Adventurous visitors can explore the labyrinth of tunnels 20m beneath the Prison by foot and by boat on a Tunnel Tour from 9am daily.
Brave visitors can delve into the darker side of the Prison’s history on a spooky Torchlight Tour every Wednesday and Friday evening.

Home to the tourist office on the ground floor, it is a great spot to start your walking tour of Fremantle. The Italian-style architecture was designed by the well-known Melbourne architects Grainger and D'Ebro with a richly decorated tower and steep mansard roof, the building also features a black swan which is the emblem of Western Australia. Officially opened in 1887, it has been fully restored to its original grandeur.

The Fremantle War Memorial, located at Monument Hill in Fremantle, is surrounded by beautiful rose gardens and well maintained lawns. It offers almost 360-degree views of Fremantle, and is an ideal vantage point to look out over Fremantle Harbour and Garden Island.

Designed by architects J F Allen and C H Nicholas, it is constructed out of Toodyay Stone and was built and unveiled in 1928. A time capsule was placed in the monument on the day of unveiling.

Surrounded by an eleven acre reserve, the main memorial is encircled on three sides by eight smaller memorials. The memorial commemorates World War I and II, the Korean War, Malayan Emergency and Vietnam War.

The Round House Precinct is the oldest surviving public building in Western Australia. It was built as a gaol and was the first permanent building in the colony. It was designed by HW Reveley, the colony's first civil engineer, and built in 1830. Wander around the Round House and marvel at the diverse uses of this historic building including its initial use as a goal and gaolers residence, it was later used as police lock up, and then as a home for the chief constable, his wife and their 10 children. It is now a popular tourist attraction. Enjoy the spectacular views from the headland which overlooks the river mouth and has uninterrupted views of Cockburn Sound. A team of volunteer guides are on duty at the Round House during opening hours. They operate the signal station, fire the time gun and drop the time ball every day at 1.00pm. The Round House is an integral stop on any self-guided tour discovering Fremantle's history. The free CAT bus is the easiest way to get around Fremantle and see all of the interesting sights. Fremantle is located just 30 minutes from Perth.

Carnac Island, Fremantle WA 6160

The fully protected nature reserve of Carnac Island is an important habitat for the rare Australian sea lion. Located south of Fremantle, Carnac Island is also known as a breeding area for many seabirds including a variety of Tern species, Little Penguins and many other local seabirds. On a cruise near the island you're also likely to see pods of wild bottlenose dolphins which are common in the area. Carnac is a well-known and popular spot for fishing, especially on the eastern side of the island where there's a sheltered bay to drop anchor.

Take a stroll through the picturesque grounds of Fremantle Cemetery to explore the final resting place of many prominent Australians. Follow the heritage trail and discover much about Western Australia's history. Look for the state's earliest gravestones of the pioneers that first settled in the Swan River colony. The cemetery was established in 1899 and since then, many prominent and notorious Australians have been laid to rest here. One of the most visited gravesites in Australia is that of rock band AC/DC's lead singer Bon Scott who was laid to rest at Fremantle Cemetery in 1980. The gravesite has become a cultural landmark and has been heritage listed by the National Trust. Fans of Bon Scott can also visit a tribute statue to the late singer in Fremantle Fisherman's Wharf. The cemetery is also home to the late bushranger Moondyne Joe and engineer C.Y. O'Connor who created Fremantle Harbour and the world's longest water main, the Goldfields Pipeline. Most recently, Australian actor Heath Ledger was cremated at the cemetery's crematorium. The Fremantle Cemetery is located in the charming coastal town of Fremantle, just 30 minutes drive south of Perth.

St Patrick's Catholic Church is a magnificent Gothic style church built at the turn of the century using local limestone. Towering over its neighbours in Fremantle, the place of worship is a significant landmark of this coastal town. As you enter St Patrick's your eyes will be drawn to the spectacular vibrant tapestry hanging above the pulpit at the front of the church. Crafted in Ireland, the enormous work of art is 50 square metres. Made of Australian wool, it weighs nearly one tonne. Study the symbolism within the tapestry and the intricate detail of the talented artist who designed the Fremantle Icon. Enjoy the changing colours as the sun shines down through the magnificent stained glass windows that feature throughout the old church. Wander around the church grounds to examine the grand 1900s building to envisage the mammoth task involved in constructing such a huge basilica.
