Point Cooke Marine Sanctuary Logo and Images

Point Cooke Marine Sanctuary

Point Cook Rd, Point Cook VIC 3030

Point Cooke Marine Sanctuary is located in the north east corner of Port Phillip Bay, a mere 30 minute drive from Melbourne. The park protects 290ha of a typical Port Phillip western shoreline which makes it the largest park in Victoria's system of marine national parks and sanctuaries. The park is largely protected from the hype of the suburbs by the coastal dunes and adjacent wetlands of the Point Cook Coastal Park and Cheetham Wetlands. Off the coast a series of basalt cliffs rise from the muddy seafloor, the remains of a larval flow that poured across the plains thousands of years ago. A combination of narrow sandy beaches, rocky reefs and mud flats, this park hosts a huge diversity of marine and coastal life. The predominant alga on the reef is a thick brown alga, Ecklonia radiata. Within its fronds it houses countless tiny marine animals and plants. Prickly sea urchins are abundant near crevices, while the exposed sections of rock support a range of life including masses of tube worms, carpets of anemones and meadows of tufting coralline and filamentous algae. In darker corners, sponges grow plentifully. Small skates and sharks patrol the surrounding seagrass beds, feasting on bivalves lying in the sediments. These seagrass beds also act as a nursery for a variety of fish species. Pods of bottlenose dolphins visit the sanctuary and in summer, swarms of jellyfish pulsate over the reef. Before you go Conditions can change in parks for many reasons. For the latest information on changes to local conditions, please visit the relevant park page on the Parks Victoria website. Cheetham Wetlands Logo and Images

Cheetham Wetlands

Point Cook Homestead Rd, Point Cook VIC 3030

Cheetham Wetlands consists of lagoons and saltmarsh of varying salinity levels created through the activities of a Saltworks that used to operate in the area. Deliberate creation of a number of relatively shallow ponds provides an environment which attracts many birds who like to feed on vegetation, insects, larvae and other small animals both in the water and on the pond floor. At different times, Cheetham Wetlands has been home to over two hundred species of birds. Many birds return year after year, travelling 9,000 - 19,000 km to this wetland habitat to feed and roost in the area. These birds breed mainly in the northern hemisphere during June and July and migrate southwards between July and November. The Wetlands are protected, through international agreements, as important habitats for wildlife and are not open to the public. The only way to view the wetlands is from the observation tower. Before you go Conditions can change in parks for many reasons. For the latest information on changes to local conditions, please visit the relevant park page on the Parks Victoria website. Wyndham Cultural Centre

177 Watton Street, Werribee VIC 3030
It consists of the 477 seat Tattersall's Theatre, with full Fly Tower & Orchestra Pit, The CBD Library, Art Gallery & Cafe. Formerly Centenary hall, the building was a common meeting place for community groups to gather and participate in functions such as Deb Balls, presentations, awards ceremonies and social activities such as dances/wedding celebrations. The most gruesome use of the hall was to hold immunisations which many residents will remember not so fondly! There are several original features remaining of the former Centenary Hall including the western supporting wall, the original staircase that leads to the gallery and the wooden floor in the library, which was formally the supper room. The most distinguishing feature is the 8m fly tower, which transformed the old Centenary hall stage area into a fully functional theatre. The foyer has many interesting plaques, which pay homage to the supporters of the venue in both its heyday as Centenary Hall and as the Wyndham Cultural Centre. There is also a time capsule buried in the floor of the foyer and will be opened in 2051. It contains pictures and memorabilia of the former Centenary Hall and the original concept plans for the current building....

Point Cook Marine Sanctuary

Road, Point Cook VIC 3030
Point Cooke Marine Sanctuary is located in the north east corner of Port Phillip Bay, a mere 30 minute drive from Melbourne. The park protects 290 hectare of a typical Port Phillip western shoreline which makes it the largest park in Victoria's system of marine national parks and sanctuaries. Pods of bottlenose dolphins visit the sanctuary and in summer, swarms of jellyfish pulsate over the reef. Conditions can change in parks for many reasons. For the latest information on changes to local conditions, please visit the relevant park page on the Parks Victoria website. Be bushfire ready in the great outdoors. Refer to the Bushfire Safety section on the Parks Victoria website for tips on how to stay safe. ...

177 Watton Street, Werribee VIC 3030
The Wyndham Cultural Centre consists of Tattersall's Theatre, with full Fly Tower and Orchestra Pit, The CBD Library, Art Gallery and Cafe. Formerly Centenary hall, the building was a common meeting place for community groups to gather and participate in functions like Deb Balls, presentations, awards ceremonies and social activities such as dances/wedding celebrations. The most gruesome use of the hall was to hold immunisations which many residents will remember not so fondly. There are several original features remaining of the former Centenary Hall including the western supporting wall, the original staircase that leads to the gallery and the wooden floor in the library, which was formally the supper room. The most distinguishing feature is the eight metre fly tower, which transformed the old Centenary hall stage area into a fully functional theatre. The foyer has many interesting plaques, which pay homage to the supporters of the venue in both its heyday as Centenary Hall and as the Wyndham Cultural Centre. There is also a time capsule buried in the floor of the foyer and will be opened in 2051. It contains pictures and memorabilia of the former Centenary Hall and the original concept plans for the current building. ...
