Riversleigh Fossil Fields

Riversleigh, Mount Isa QLD 4825

The Australian Fossil Mammal Sites at Riversleigh and Naracoorte were inscribed in the World Heritage List in 1994 for their outstanding representation of the evolution of Australian mammals and the quality of their fossils, which are preserved in limestone. The Riversleigh section, which covers 10,000 hectares, is located in the southern section of Boodjamulla National Park in north-west Queensland. Naracoorte can be found over 2,000 kilometres away in South Australia. The Riversleigh fossil deposits are among the richest and most extensive in the world, with some fossils dating back 15 to 25 million years. The site provides exceptional examples of mammalian assemblages in a continent whose mammal evolutionary history has been the most isolated and most distinctive in the world. It includes the first records of many groups of living mammals, such as marsupial moles and feather-tailed possums, as well as other unique and extinct species such as the 'marsupial lion'. The area open to the public was one of the first fossil deposits found, and gives visitors an opportunity to view many fossilised mammals and reptiles first hand.

Lawn Hill (Boodjamulla) National Park, Mount Isa QLD 4825

Boodjamulla (Lawn Hill) National Park is one of Queensland's most scenic national parks. Situated within the remote north-west highlands of Queensland, the park features spectacular gorge country, sandstone ranges and World Heritage fossils. Lawn Hill Gorge is formed by Lawn Hill Creek, which is fed by numerous freshwater springs from the limestone plateau to the west. The magnitude of the sandstone cliffs lining the gorge, its emerald waters and lush vegetation make it a visual splendour. Serving as an oasis, the spring water and surrounding vegetation attract an abundance of wildlife. The Waanyi Aboriginal people have strong cultural ties with the park while pastoralists of European descent have more recent historical connections. A partly-shaded walking track leads to the culturally important Wild Dog Dreaming site with ancient rock art and stone engravings. The Waanyi people ask that you respect their culture by not taking photographs at this site. The track continues into the lower gorge where freshwater crocodiles are often spotted basking in the sun. This is a pleasant walk, even in the mid-afternoon. Keep to the walking track at all times. Take note of safety signs and do not touch the rock art or engravings. Carry plenty of drinking water to avoid dehydration and try to walk in the cooler part of the day. Wild Dog Dreaming Grade: easy. Distance: 4.5 kilometres return. Time: allow 1.5 hours walking time.

Royal Flying Doctor Service Visitor Centre

11 Barkly Highway, Mount Isa QLD 4825

Some people call it the outback's greatest miracle - that phenomenal 'mantle of safety over the inland' known as the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS). It started as the vision of one man, the very Reverend John Flynn, and was realised in part in 1928 when a single-engine aircraft took to the sky on missions of mercy to the people of outback Queensland. Today, the vision is clearer than ever. The RFDS services huge areas of sparsely populated land, bringing a range of medical services from life-saving emergency flights to regular clinics. Come and learn more about this uniquely Australian service at the Mount Isa RFDS Base on the Barkly Highway. Here, there is a Visitors Centre and the Outback Shop. Sit back in comfort and watch a documentary video on RFDS operations in Queensland, then wander through the interesting museum displays. Afterwards, browse through the Outback Shop for a memento of your visit. There is an extensive range of affordable souvenirs and clothing, and your purchases will help the RFDS keep their aircraft and their doctors in the skies.

Mount Isa in the years of WWI was an isolated blip of far-flung pastoral leases, with the occasional prospector finding slim pickings. Yet this district saw its youth leave to sign up for King and Country on the other side of the world, some of whom were stockmen and horse breakers, skills much sought after by the Australian Light Horse. A war memorial obelisk in George McCoy Park was refurbished in 2005. It includes the names of locals who served in WWI, WWII and Vietnam. Mount Isa didn't really 'make the map' until lone gold prospector John Campbell Miles stumbled upon one of the world's richest deposits of copper, silver and zinc during his expedition into the Northern Territory in 1923. Mount Isa Mines was established a year later and the city grew around it.

Fossils. If you think they're a dry and dusty subject that only palaeontologists and university professors would be interested in, you haven't experienced the incredible Riversleigh Fossil Centre, part of the multi-award winning Outback at Isa complex. Feel yourself virtually transported to a bygone world when you come face-to-face with the prehistoric inhabitants of Outback Australia. Far removed from the latter-day realities of technological advancement and space travel, the Riversleigh Fossil Centre reconstructs the world as it was millions of years ago. It's exciting, it's exotic and it's like nothing else you've ever seen. Inside the state-of-the-art museum, video displays and dioramas bring the world alive in a colourful way, while scientific displays of fossils give an accurate look at what remains of that ancient world. You can also take a guided tour of the laboratory where Outback at Isa's resident palaeontologist and trained staff free fossil bones of extinct creatures from limestone and piece the puzzle of their lives back together.

Mount Isa Underground Hospital and Museum

Joan Street, Mount Isa QLD 4825
The first hospital in Mount Isa was a row of tents operated by the company from the earliest years of mining operations. Mount Isa Mines opened a 40 bed Community Hospital on the leases in 1929. Eventually another hospital was built on the Hospital reserve in town. With the expanded hospital complex it was realised with two competing hospitals and funding for both that neither could be run efficiently and residents were encouraged to use the state run hospital. The mine hospital was effectively reduced to a casualty and first-aid station. With the advent of World War II the impact on Australia was not great until the bombing in 1942 of Darwin. The work on defending the top end of Australia caused the influx of thousands of American troops into Northwest Queensland from April 1942. With the bombing of the Darwin Hospital, precautions were taken to protect the Mount Isa district hospital in the event of an air raid....

Mount Isa

45200 - Mount Isa QLD 4825
Affectionately known as the 'oasis of the outback', Mount Isa is a gleaming mirage on the horizon for travellers from all directions. Nestled among the ochre-red Selwyn Ranges, on the banks of the Leichhardt River, Mount Isa is a bustling melting pot of culture and industry and also home to the world's third largest rodeo. It's grown from strength to strength over the years but the harsh picturesque landscape has barely changed, becoming one of the main draw-cards for visitors each year. Mount Isa has ample places to fish, camp or relax and enjoy an outback sunset. The rugged terrain is a four-wheel-driver's haven, and visitors can explore the region just as the pioneers of the region did many years ago. The twin jewels in Mount Isa's crown are the spectacular Lawn Hill Gorge in Boodjamulla National Park and its neighbour, the world heritage listed Riversleigh Fossil Fields. A must see is the Outback at Isa complex, incorporating the award winning Riversleigh Fossil Centre, Hard Times Mine, Sir James Foots Building, Outback Park and Visitor Information Centre. The Hard Times Mine is a working replica mine designed and operated by actual miners where you can gain an insight into the industry integral to Mount Isa's economy. Mount Isa's existence and its main financial base is the huge Mount Isa Mine, the world's largest single producer of copper, silver, lead and zinc. In 1923, John Campbell Miles found a silver-lead ore outcrop. This rich deposit is still producing high volumes of ore and is classed as one of the world's great mines. Other attractions are the School of the Air, which provides an education to students on remote properties as far as 1000 kilometres away via satellite internet. Mount Isa is also home to one of Queensland's largest Royal Flying Doctors bases, the National Trust Tent House, a WW2 Underground Hospital and the Beth Anderson Museum....
