Old Government House lies in the heart of Belair National Park, 11 kilometres south of Adelaide. It was built on the Government Farm as South Australia's first official vice-regal summer cottage residence (1860-1880), and was used by some of the early governors of South Australia; MacDonnell (1855-62) and Daly (1862-68). The Old Government House buildings now reflect how the wealthy of the Victorian era lived, with the main house displaying the style and accoutrements of the well-to-do and the servants' quarters the more modest furnishings of a working family. Featuring an elegant terrace and South Australia's first indoor plunge pool it stands as an excellent example of Victorian-style architecture. Visitors can also take a leisurely stroll through the one-acre garden; featuring a collection of cottage plants and flowers as cultivated in Victorian times, heritage roses and mature trees. The buildings are open on Sundays and public holidays from 1pm to 4pm. Step back in time to the days of Cobb and Co Coaches with a visit to the Reynella Horse Changing Station. Built in the 1850’s, the carefully restored building has had many different uses, including time as a stable, a church, a black smith’s shop and, of course, as a station at which stage coaches on the Adelaide to Willunga route would stop and change horses. An interesting collection of historical artefacts, heritage information and photographs describing and depicting this fascinating history are now on display in the restored building. Mementos of your visit can also be purchased. Car parking and toilet facilities are available in the shopping centre located on the same site as the Reynella Horse Changing Station. Archery Park is devoted to all forms of archery as a recreation and pastime for the whole family. Gone are fibreglass bows and arrows and boring targets. Now the latest compound bows and carbon arrows make instruction and use simple. After a short familiarisation, you will safely and accurately negotiate one of our three-field courses. Field archery is similar to golf. You will wander through 44 acres of natural bush, following established tracks. Over 90 targets await you, varying in size from wild buffalo to fox or rabbit. Your own skill will decide the distance you are required to shoot. It's easy. All ages from five to 80 can have a go. We cater for the beginner through to the advanced archer. As a bonus you will enjoy great views and find yourself surrounded by native flora and abundance of wildlife. Sturt Gorge Recreation Park is internationally recognised as an area of conservation and geological significance. The park conserves the nationally threatened greybox grassy woodland vegetation which was once abundant across southern Australia. The park is also home to a rock formation, known as sturt tillite, that is believed to have been formed from glacial material dropped from ice floating in the ocean that covered South Australia 800 million years ago. The new land addition of Craigburn Farm has increased the park area considerably. It has been developed into a major revegetation site, and a destination for mountain bike riding and hiking with a high class network of new trails which offers the opportunity to observe the oldest rocks in the park and their surrounding grasslands and open woodlands. You can ride your bike on roads open to the public or use the specific cycling trails and tracks on offer in the Sturt Gorge Recreation Park.
