Twelfth Night Theatre

4 Cintra Road, Bowen Hills QLD 4006

The Boutique Twelfth Night Theatre is located in the leafy inner Brisbane suburb of Bowen Hills.

Where every seat is a good seat and Where every show is the best.

Since 1988, Twelfth Night Theatre is owned by Gail Wiltshire.  It has the distinction of being the only privately owned theatre in Australia.  Neither the theatre nor its productions receive any form of Government subsidy.

It was built by the community in 1969.   Twelfth Night Theatre stands on land donated by Majorie and Brian Johnstone.  In 1980, the Queensland Government of the time sold the theatre into private ownership and it is because of the support of the people of Brisbane that it stands today; a gracious and welcoming theatre presenting popular productions, some of which are listed on the 'Best of British Comedy' page.

Our aim is to mount 3 productions each year using Hamilton Town Hall as our home base.

We welcome new volunteers, whether experienced or novice. While many people think instantly of being on stage – and we do run open auditions wherever possible – there is always room for extra hands to design or construct sets or costumes, operate lights, crew a show or staff front of house. The good part is, if you volunteer with us, your commitment can be as extensive or as restricted as you choose.

We are also keen to support other community organisations so if you have a fund raising idea you think we can help you with, please make contact and we’ll see what we can do!

Kalinga Park Memorial Logo and Images

Kalinga Park Memorial

100 Bertha Street, Wooloowin QLD 4030

Victoria's Great Ocean Road may be Australia's best known WWI repatriation project but Brisbane families enjoy another year-round: Kalinga Park's unofficial 'Diggers Drive'. In May 1924, Governor Sir Matthew Nathan opened a 1,200 metre tree-lined roadway from war memorial gates in Park Avenue, following the curve of Kedron Brook, to Sandgate Road. The road was built and trees planted by 83 unemployed soldiers. After WWI, Australia was awash with grief for its 60,000 dead fighters. Many more returned nursing injuries and needing re-employment. While the Commonwealth Department of Repatriation placed returning soldiers in jobs, progress was slow: community groups like Kalinga Unemployed and Distressed Soldiers Committee formed to provide relief and work. Diggers Drive was its project, commencing in 1922. Kalinga Park had opened in 1910. In October 1920, memorial gates at the Park Avenue entrance were erected as an everlasting memory of the patriotic services of men who enlisted from Kalinga District. The gates were a venture between the local Ladies Patriotic Club, Kalinga Progress Association and Toombul Shire Council. For a time, the park was even called ANZAC Memorial Park. Now a popular outdoor play space, it served as a large army staging camp during WWII.

Pinkenba War Memorial Logo and Images

Pinkenba War Memorial

Eagle Farm Road, Pinkenba QLD 4008

During WWI, the Pinkenba wharves on the Brisbane River were the point of embarkation for many Australian troops, including members of the Light Horse. Not far from where soldiers were waved off, a solid cairn memorial stands remembering those who did not return. The Pinkenba monument unveiled by His Excellency the Governor Sir Hamilton Goold-Adams on 16 August 1919, records the names of 42 men who enlisted from the Toombul district, eight of whom died. This memorial features the bronze work of skilled Norwegian migrant Ernest Gunderson, also known for his war memorial commissions in Gayndah and Dalby. A plinth of cast rusticated-finish concrete blocks supports an obelisk-like bronze pedestal with Doric columns at each corner. This section contains the honour roll. A small dome sits atop a square platform with an upright artillery shell and a laurel wreath, all in bronze, projecting from the dome. Pinkenba's war memorial is not intact: miniature bronze mounted troopers and soldiers have long since disappeared. A WWII memorial plaque, set on a basalt stone, sits nearby, recording local enlistments and the four who died.

Windsor War Memorial Park Logo and Images

Windsor War Memorial Park

311 Lutwyche Road, Windsor QLD 4030

A red light from a bronze lantern beams out at night from a Helidon brown sandstone cenotaph, standing on a high point of a northern thoroughfare leading towards Brisbane's Central Business District. The octagonal pavilion with its four arches and domed roof was unveiled on ANZAC Day 1925 on behalf of the citizens of Windsor to commemorate local residents who had served in WWI. This dominating cenotaph, designed by honorary architects FR Hall and WA Devereux and constructed by Peter Frew, is rare among Queensland's WWI monuments because of its octagonal design. Yeronga's Memorial is closest in style in Brisbane. External corner panels are inscribed with names of some 120 local war dead. Red and blue concrete borders a leaded marble commemorative plaque on the pavilion's floor. Moulded laurel wreath ornamentation encircle the ceiling. The Windsor War Memorial stands on the site of the original school situated between Lutwyche Road and Roblane Street, Windsor-opposite the former Windsor Town Council Chambers.

Newstead Park Memorials Logo and Images

Newstead Park Memorials

199 Breakfast Creek Road, Newstead QLD 4006

Newstead Park, on Brisbane River, conceals many stories-including its part in WWI. A memorial trophy cannon unveiled near the rotunda in 1922 caused controversy: an alderman suggested it was an 'emblem of evil' and that the money would be better spent supporting returned servicemen. The cannon was removed in the 1950s, donated to the 9th Battalion-and made way for the Australian American Memorial, one of only two such memorials in Australia, attesting to Brisbane's importance in the Allied victory in the South-West Pacific. The grounds of Newstead House, Brisbane's oldest surviving residence, also hosted fundraising efforts during WWI. A dolls' carnival in 1917 was a special drawcard, raising money to send 'comforts' to the troops in the trenches, specifically the 25th Battalion. Newstead House was occupied by the US Army from 1942 through to the end of WWII. The grounds reflect the American occupation and hold memorials to the Australian Navy Corvettes, submariners and Vietnam veterans.

It now serves as the Headquarters to Queensland Branch of The English Speaking Union who welcomes the public for tours, hosts events and provides travellers' accommodation.

Bulimba Memorial Park Logo and Images

Bulimba Memorial Park

129 Oxford Street, Bulimba QLD 4171

Take a close look at the sprawling weeping figs on trendy Bulimba's Oxford Street: they are what's left of a living tribute to serviceman killed in action in WWI. The trees, planted between 1919 and 1923, flanked three sides of the memorial park, dedicated in November 1919. Name plaques were once attached. A wrought iron arch bearing the words 'Memorial Park' presents a formal gateway to the park and a lectern-like concrete pillar bears a brass memorial plaque to the soldiers, sailors and nurses of Bulimba who enlisted. Local fundraising also enabled the park's two-storeyed grandstand to be built, in 1923, as a further memorial. Its architect is thought to have been GMH Addison who designed the ferry terminal building at the end of Oxford Street. The 4.6ha park is a popular place for family outings, picnickers and sport year-round.
