Pastoralists first took up holdings around the Junee area in 1845, but it was not until the railway arrived later in the century that the town developed. The original village, Jewnee gazetted in 1863, was on the site of a stock run. In 1878 the southern railway was extended to a centre about four miles east of Jewnee and so Junee begins. In 1883 the settlement was proclaimed as the village of Loftus, though two years later this name was changed to Junee. By 1886 Junee boasted six hotels and twelve stores among its assortment of buildings, a reflection of the town's rapid development. Junee Heritage Tours are self guided tours for visitors to complete at their leisure. The Westside walk is a tale of two very different men and two fortunes. The East Side Walk encapsulates Junee as a town created by the railway, but divided by the rails....

The Broadway Museum is home of the Junee and District Historical Society. Housed in what was the old Broadway Hotel, the museum has a variety of thematic displays using artefacts from the Junee area presented so as to provoke thought and interest in the history of the Shire and sometimes a little of the humour of the residents. Also to be found are photographs and documentation dealing with the rich heritage of a rural and railway past and present, the families and their pursuits of business and sporting activities. The museum is operated entirely by volunteers. Entry to the Museum is by way of Bettys on Broadway Coffee shop. The Museum is also the new home to the Junee Visitor Information Centre. ...

Monte Cristo Historic Homestead

The finest colonial mansion in the Riverina and South West New South Wales, Monte Cristo was built in 1884, and is faithfully restored and furnished in the high Victorian era circa 1840 to 1900. The homestead features a wonderful collection of antiques, an extensive carriage collection, as well as a wheelwright's shop which manufactures all kinds of carriage wheels. Classified as the "Most Haunted House in Australia", visitors are dared to book for an evening ghost tour - they are extremely popular so you must book in advance. They cater for bus tours, dinners and luncheons. Special functions can also be arranged in advance. Enjoy a Devonshire tea and a living picture of middle class life in Victorian times. If you dare you can join one of the night ghost tours, but be quick as spaces fill fast....
