Montezuma Falls

Off A10, Rosebery TAS 7470
Montezuma Falls, near Rosebery on Tasmania's west coast, is Tasmania's highest waterfall. The track to the falls begins at Williamsford, two kilometres south of Rosebery. This easy, three-hour return walk along a level track takes you to the base of the 104 metre falls through pleasant park-like rainforest of leatherwood, myrtle, sassafras and giant tree ferns. You may see native wildlife along the way, including several species of birds. The track follows the historic route of the former North East Dundas Tramway right to the base of Montezuma Falls. The creek immediately below the falls was once spanned by a wooden trestle bridge, 160 feet long and 50 feet high. Today derelict pieces of timber, moss-covered concrete piers and rusty bolts are the only remains of this bridge. Facilities at nearby Rosebery include picnic facilities, shops and toilets. Rosebery Golf Course is set among natural bush and has some lovely views over the surrounding forest and mountains. The course has an interesting layout which winds around the forest and includes some hills. Both the eighth and ninth holes are par five and are played up and then back down a large hill. The eighth hole is a feature - with a narrow tee shot, dog-leg to the left and 250-metre uphill to a two-tiered green surrounded by rainforest. The area has a high rainfall so fairways are usually well grassed and the greens well maintained. The course is operated by members of the local community with support from the local mining company. Green fees are paid into an honesty box as the course clubhouse is only open for competition mornings and afternoons. Holes: nine, Par: 72, Length: 5,650 metres, Australian Course Rating: 70...
