The three bedrooms in total can cater for up to nine people, as extra bedding is available. A couple of trundle beds can be added for short term stays in the rooms if needed. John Dermer has been producing fine pots since 1967 and to his credit many works in private and public collections both in Australia and overseas. Amongst those of note are works in the new Parliament House (Cabinet Entry) Canberra, (Federal) High Court Building, Australia National Gallery, State and regional galleries and museums as well as important private collections. John has held one person exhibitions both in Australia and Japan since 1971 and appears in many publications on ceramics and art in Australia. Kirby's Flat Pottery commenced in 1974 and is the oldest established pottery in the region. A great deal of care and consideration is given to the design and function of tableware which is produced from porcelain, giving the work long life and quality. Exhibition work for sale includes Terra Sigillata and Salt Glazed porcelain....

Indigo Gold Trail

Today, in and around Yackandandah, Beechworth, Chiltern and Rutherglen, the legacy of the rush for gold remains. The Indigo Gold Trail takes in some of the most picturesque countryside in Australia and includes scores of easily accessible sites identified by storyboards featuring the Gold Trail logo. Sites can be visited by car, bike or walking and are marked on Gold Trail maps found on the website or at Visitor Information Centres. Gold was discovered in Yackandandah in 1852 soon after the first discoveries at Reid's and Spring Creeks (Beechworth). William Howitt, one of the first diggers on the scene, described finding gold 'hanging in the roots of the shrubs that we pulled up' from the creek. A tent town sprang up along the banks of the Yackandandah and Commissioner's Creeks, one of several tent towns in the area, some of which continued beyond the life of the gold strikes, including Osborne's Flat, Rowdy Flat and Allan's Flat, Whiskey Flat and Bell's Flat. After the first wave of alluvial gold seekers, entrepreneurs such as Wallace and Fletcher arrived, installing sluicing barges employing men 24 hours a day in shifts....

The Yackandandah Museum has a large and comprehensive collection of the many stories from the district. The Museum is set in the old Bank of Victoria which includes the managers cottage at the rear of the premises. Allan's Flat Reserve

Allans Flat Reserve is approximately eight kilometres from Yackandandah, heading north east on the Yackandandah-Wodonga Road. The lake at the reserve is a popular swimming hole for locals, created during the gold rush days from dredge mining. Take your own picnic and shade and enjoy a cool swim during warm summer days and evenings. Allan?s Flat Reserve is managed as a Family Fishing Lake and stocked twice yearly with rainbow trout and annually with golden perch. The lake was created by gold dredging operations. A Recreational Fishing Licence is required unless you are under 18 years or over 70 years old. Contact the Yackandandah Visitor Informationn Centre for a list of retailers where licences can be purchased and information on bait and tackle supplies. The turn-off is easy to miss so keep an eye-out for the unmade road that is the entrance to the Reserve....

Yackandandah Cemetery

With the discovery of gold in 1852 and the increase of population in the immediate vicinity of Yackandandah, a town cemetery would have soon been essential. A wander around the Yackandandah Cemetery evokes memories of a bygone era of hardship and gold mining. The first burial recorded was of 14 month old Ellen Anderson on 7 September 1859. The oldest remaining headstone belongs to James Stewart, a miner, buried 30 March 1860, aged 28. There is a Chinese Section with 26 known burials between 1860 and 1903, again a reminder of the thousands of Chinese that lived and worked on the gold diggings....

The walk starts at Isaacs Park in the Yackandandah township, just over the historic Stone Bridge and continues over Commissioners Creek. Keep walking across the boardwalk over the creek and you will come to the Miner's Hut, a replica of an original miner?s home during the first gold rush. The historic Court House is also along this path. This is a short easy walk taking approximately 20 minutes....
