The Great North Road, surveyed in 1825 and completed in 1836, was constructed using convict labour. Up to 720 convicts - some in chains - worked on the road, which spanned 264 km, connecting Sydney to the settlements of the Hunter Valley. It features spectacular and beautifully preserved examples of stonework, including buttresses, culverts, bridges and twelve metre high retaining walls. Only 43 kilometres of the road remains undeveloped and relatively intact. Running through and alongside Dharug National Park and Yengo National Park, this section has been named the Old Great North Road. It goes from Wisemans Ferry in the south to Mount Manning (near Bucketty) in the north, and includes the oldest surviving stone bridges in mainland Australia. The road is closed to motor vehicles, but makes a great walk over two or three days - or an exhilarating day's cycle....

Singletons Retreat is located on the Hawkesbury River, down river from Wisemans Ferry and is a river front property surrounded by National Park. The Cottage was built in about 1865 on one of the first settled properties in this part of the Hawkesbury River. It was originally owned by James Singleton who, with his brother Benjamin Singleton operated the biggest tidal mill from the 1830s onwards. Singletons Mill supplied flour grown from the local area which was taken by sail ship to the colony at Sydney Cove. The cottage has all the modern facilities and comforts to help you relax as you watch the ever changing landscape. Come explore the beautiful Hawkesbury River by kayak. They have single and double kayaks available for hire seven days a week, between 8.30am and 4.30pm. It's a great way to get active, enjoy the sun and have fun with friends and family. It's also a great school holiday activity for teenagers. Kayaks are not hired out during inappropriate weather conditions. You must be able to swim to hire kayaks....

St Albans Writers Festival is a new Australian literary festival celebrating writers, books and writing of all styles, genres and forms, based in the small and picturesque village of St Albans. The landscape of the Hawkesbury with its diverse population of farmers, artists, writers, tree-changers and weekenders provides a unique and stimulating setting to meet writers, discuss books and debate ideas.
