Visit the Volcanoes Discovery Centre in Penshurst at the foot of the dormant Mt Rouse volcano and be transported back thousands of years to when volcanoes were erupting right across the Western District and into South Australia. At the Volcanoes Discovery Centre you will see how the surrounding volcanoes formed and shaped the landscape. See where the bluestone used in the building of the Victorian Houses of Parliament came from. Hold a volcanic bomb in your hands. The heritage listed ceiling of the original bluestone section of the Volcanoes Discovery Centre is of particular interest. A modern conference room is available for hire. Mt Rouse - Aboriginal name 'Collorrer' rising 120 metres above the surrounding plains - is within walking distance. From its peak there are magnificent panoramic views in all directions. A walking track takes you to the southern end of Mt Rouse and its deep, circular crater lake. Visit at sunset to see hundreds of wallabies and kangaroos bounding across the far side of the crater....
