Clermont

Capella Street, Clermont QLD 4721
The town of Clermont is one of the most historic towns in northern Australia, having a colourful past, rich in drama and laced with tragedy. It was the first inland settlement in the tropics, making it a frontier town in the truest sense of the word. It was in 1861 that the owners of Langton Downs sent a party of shepherds to the lagoon at the edge of the flood plain. Their task was to build huts, but having had experience as prospectors, the men soon found payable gold in the area. The first influx of miners occurred in 1862, pitching camp alongside what was to be called Hood's Lagoon (after one of the owners of Langton Station). By 1864, the town reserve was declared in the name of Clermont. It is believed the town drew its name from Clermont-Ferrand in France, the home of Oscar de Satge who at the time was the owner of Wolfang Downs. Some of that frontier atmosphere can still be found in Clermont without having to look for too long. Hidden amongst the new prosperity are the remnants of earlier times, from the days of gold rushes, and copper mines, timbergetters and shearers, stockmen and squatters. Mining development brought many of the consumer comforts of the town, but the attitude of the people is still one of rugged individualism. Copperfield Store, Chimney and Cemetery

Rubyvale-Copperfield Road, Clermont QLD 4721
In 1861 copper was discovered four miles south-west of Clermont and Queensland's first copper mine, Peak Downs Copper Mining Company was born. By December 1864 the first shipment of copper was destined for Broadsound on bullock drawn drays and within 15 years a total of 17,000 tons of refined copper sold. In 1874, the Municipality of Copperfield was declared and the town was bustling with over 2000 Chinese, Welsh and Australian residents and the town comprised of 370 dwellings, 31 miles of roads and streets incorporating two banks, a baker, three butchers, three blacksmiths, six stores, a saddler, two auctioneers, a cordial maker and six hotels, school of arts, a newsagent and its own newspaper, Copperfield Miner. By 1892 the population had declined to 85 and the copper mine closed in 1907. All that remains today of Copperfield is the store, cemetery and chimney. The rich history of the town and its pioneers was instrumental in shaping the mining industry of today. These landmarks demonstrate the development and decline of Copperfield as a copper mine and commercial centre from the 1860s to the 1970s and it is unusual for stores in mining towns to outlive the remainder of the settlement. ...

Flood Memorial or "The Stump", The

Drummond Street, Clermont QLD 4721
In 1860/61 Messrs Hood, Gogg and Manning, who had purchased land on the Peak Downs, sent a party to build huts and yards on their property in readiness for the arrival of sheep. The party consisted of Mr Mingendie (in charge) and Nelson and McDonald. They pitched their tents a short distance down stream from the junction of Sandy and Wolfang Creeks where fine iron bark was to be had for splitting. The only water then was in the lagoon and a small hole just below the present cemetery. Having some experience, they prospected a small gully close to their camp and were fortunate enough in finding payable gold, the rest is history. The town, originally called Hoods Lagoon and later to be named Clermont, was established on the banks of the lagoon. Flooded several times in the next 50 years until the big one in 1916 in which 63 people lost their lives, the town was then moved to its present site. In the late 1970?s it was decided to mount a monument in memory of those who lost their lives in the great flood. A competition was held, and the monument design chosen from entries. The popular choice was that of a monolith in the form of a Tree Trunk: a reminder of those lives undoubtedly saved by clinging to trees until they could be rescued. A suitable tree trunk was located, moulds manufactured, and the sections filled with concrete and left to set. It was then assembled on site, painted and the plaques fitted. The Flood Memorial, or ?The Stump? as it is affectionately referred to locally, is sited on the corner of Drummond and Capricorn Streets, the site of the Central Tea Rooms in the old town. The memorial was dedicated on Australia Day 1980....
